Wow, Good Estimate!

  • More than three months after aldermen approved a $5.5 million fund to provide reparations to victims of police torture, the deadline to apply for restitution has passed, and the process has begun to decide who gets a share of the pot.

“We’ve received approximately 57 claims back,” said Daniel Coyne, a criminal law professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, who was appointed to screen the applications and conduct an independent review to determine the legitimacy of all claims.

In May, the City Council approved a deal to set up a $5.5 million reparations fund to pay restitution of up to $100,000 each to people with credible claims of torture by disgraced former police Cmdr. Jon Burge and his detectives.
Gee, $5.5 million and 57 claimants. If each is awarded the maximum of $100,000, that works out almost exactly. Figure a couple cases are going to get less, but still....amazingly accurate.

And remember, these claims were all determined to be past the statute of limitations, yet somehow, $5.5 million is located and set aside for something that was never even proven to have taken place.

I was in gang crimes north in the 80's. Daniel Coyne was the 'house' lawyer for the d.c. Eagles motorcycle gang. Guess we know how impartial he is going to be.

But nothing for the pension, which the city basically stole from us by not contributing to it.

Did anyone from CPD apply for the payments? PTSD due to false memories of imaginary torture infliction must be mentally debilitating. They suffered too.

How much did the Machine-connected law firm partners bank on this gig?

How much of a "down payment" did those partners cough up in campaign donations and in-kind "support" for the Machine?

Illinois is a cesspool of political corruption, and Chicago is the pustule of political pathogens that re-seeds the state's government with poison each cycle.

Do we ever wonder how other states collecting a fraction of the taxes have lower crime rates, better schools, smoother roads, etc.? The difference is graft, pure and simple, and "reparations" is just (as SCC knows too well) the veneer hiding all the work of the political termites beneath.

This is the ghetto lottery version of a scratch ticket winner. The only good thing is that it will all be spent in less than six months.
I am still stewing over the gang banger who got $25 million. Maimed children run over by a bus, quadriplegics, etc don't get that much $$ aaaarrrghghgh.

Plus don't forget all Chicago school children from 8th to 10th grade as part of their history lessons will have to learn about how the evil police tortured innocent black men. That is part of the Burge settlement.

This is the City Council laundering taxpayer money to the favored few who will kick back a percentage.

it is not too surprising that a deal was made between the lawyers subject to approval by the city council. that is not all that unusual of a way to handle these kind of claims. The lawyers for the city did a good job - the city got off cheap, and with minimal bad PR. Probably as good an outcome for the city as there is for such cases.

OT - There will be an "open primary" for the next election of the State's Attorney. A "Mosby" clone is being backed by Prickwrinkle - her name is Kimberly Fox. Remember NOT to vote for this "black lives matter" bitch. Goofy County Commissioner John Fritchey is just as stupid. Never thought that Anita would be my choice but the other candidates are even worse & Anti-Police.
