Police Shoot Assailant
- Gresham District officers were conducting a traffic stop of a suspected stolen vehicle in the 7800 block of South King Drive around 7:45 p.m. when the driver reversed, hitting another vehicle, then accelerated towards the officers, according to a police statement.
As the vehicle approached them, the officers were boxed in between the suspect and traffic stopped at a red light. "In fear of their lives," one of the officers fired two shots at the vehicle, striking the driver, police said.
The driver, an adult male, was taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition, police and fire officials said. A Fire Department spokesman said the man was in serious-to-critical condition.
The passenger was arrested with a loaded firearm in his waistband, police said. Officials did not release the ages of the two males.
McCarthy didn't state whether or not the assailant had a drivers license, nor whether the gun offender had a valid FOID card and Concealed Carry License.

Wow. Second city cops. Where is the post about the 2 squad car accident from 005. 4 officers were hurt. It happened on 14 Aug 15. Tact guys on foot chasing a guy with a gun. Bad guy in custody, weapon recovered, officers are all ok resting at home.

We're usually very pro Police department, having several family members on CPD, and in, or retired from, the various branches of the military, but even as distasteful as his actions were, this case does violate this person's civil rights:

While we completely agree that the lyrics violate respect, it is absolutely legal to use both distasteful gestures and language on public property. Unless the property owner objects, it's also legal to use obscene language and gestures on private property.

Well it turns out that the driver had just been released from a psych unit despite pleas from his family to keep him there because they knew he would hurt someone when he got out. Somehow he got a hold of a set of keys and a car when he was released and according to sources was driving the car at close to 100 mph when he hit the parked vehicle with the woman inside. How fucked up is that.

Very sad indeed. The woman was pregnant and she lost her child. Our mental health system is broken and it is a joke. A childhood friend of mine served two tours in Iraq. He came back to the States and was never the same. He suffered from severe anxiety issues and post traumatic stress issues. He tried to get help from the VA and it was minimal. He asked for extended services and was put on a waiting list while he was just given the bare minimum. He drove to Minnesota last winter and killed himself at a state park. God only knows the mental agony and torture he was going through.
