And Another 9%

We guess someone has to sue the government to do their jobs occasionally, like when there's an unpopular vote to be taken:
  • A group of Chicago residents is suing the city for allegedly trying to sneak in a 9 percent tax on streaming services like Netflix, Spotify and Amazon Prime.

The non-profit Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court on Wednesday claiming the city had no authority to impose the tax, approved in June, which is expected to result in bill hikes for thousands of Chicagoans.

The suit argues the city Finance Department’s decision is illegal, and the comptroller "exceeded his authority." Specifically, the suit claims the tax was slipped in using a creative interpretation of an old municipal code. Instead of passing a new tax, the city extended Chicago's existing "amusement tax" to include paid subscriptions for streamed digital music, TV shows and games.
Here a tax, there a tax, everywhere a tax tax.

3rd generation cpd, 10 yrs. On the job. Taking the jump Monday and leaving the dept. to go to another in indiana. It's what's best for me and my family. These times, this city and those running it, it's become too much and I believe it's just going to get worse and worse. I can't take it anymore. My father and grandfather would turn in their graves if they could see what this city and dept. has become. I can't stand these shitheads being hero's as well. It's time to go so I can feel alive and well again and be the officer I want to be and the one the taxpayers paying my salary deserve. Time to find happy again. I'll miss all my brothers and sisters working the beats. Good luck, god bless and be safe. I hope you all find "happy" again. I'll miss you all just as I'll miss "the city that once was". Be safe.

All these taxes and fees, yet the City will NOT cut the useless city council in half!

We don't need 50 idiot Alderman get their hands greased all the time!

Time for the city council to go to just 20 Alderman and save the money for the pension funds!

You see, if I pay for the lawyer, I have to determine if the gains of litigation outweigh the rewards. If the city pays for a lawyer, they dont care, because its OPM (other peoples money). Most likely any revinue gained will go to the lawyers, and the net will be a loss to the city taxpayers.

I wonder if the city has a department of OPM?

Fuck Rahm the Rat. My Netflix just went up 71 cents a month and my retired BCBS Medicare supp. Is going up 44.00 a month. What is he going to do with the money? Put it in his TIF funds so he can give it to his political donors as payback. And they put Blago in jail for just thinking corruption.
Fardon?' Fardon? You awake boy?

What does Msall "the Weasal" say about Rahms TIF funds? Ol "Night school" should be checking his buddy's funds and demanding a full accounting of where the funds are going while Rahm is crying broke. The city ain't broke when it comes to giving tax payer funds to Rahms political donors.
Second City Cop Blog should list all of the taxes that are in effect here in Chicago so that everyone can see a complete list of what Rahm is missappropriating maybe that will wake up some people to realize that the democratic socialists of today need to go.
Also, did anyone see Senators Durbin, Kirk or Gov Rauner at the lieutenant's funeral in Fox Lake? If it were a Black felon killed by the police they would have been there. What a shame!

Taxes, as long as they are moderate is good for the city. Because it drives out the riff raffs from the city. The moochers. The free loaders. This then allows the well to do, the educated, the rich to move right into the city. If you are going to complain about a mere 9% entertainment tax then you really should move to some crappy suburb like Northlake or Bensenville. Better yet, just leave Illinois and move to some backward Southern state like Texas or Alabama. I hear it's cheap over there.

Good luck on your new job and new city/state. You did what is best for you and your family. Just a bit of advice: 1. See if you can first get a leave of absence. Just in case your new employer bails out on you. Trust me, it's been done before. 2. Make sure you do have ten full years on the job. After ten years you are vested into the pension. You will get something from the CPD pension. Call the Chicago Pension Benefit Annuity Fund for more information. 3. If you put money in deferred comp then you can roll it over into an existing IRA. DO NOT WITHDRAW MONEY from your city deferred comp and think you can then transfer it. If you do that, you will have to pay a shit ton in penalties and taxes. Simply roll it over. Call whoever is handling your IRA and they will do it for you. 4.Good luck.

we can not get away from talking about TIF funds... You know, your tax payer does not care about TIFs, they care about paying your pension 9 out 10 times before TIFs.

to everyone who mentions TIFs... it stands for Tax increment financing-- ie Tax Incentive Funding... so calling it TIF Funds, does not make sense

Backward Southern state? Just how many 60-year-old movies do you watch?
I live in Savannah, GA. We have world-class hospitals, universities, industries, roads, and much, much more.
We have lower taxes, a higher standard of living, friendlier people, and one more thing, more RESPECT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT than you will find in any northern city.
Three months out of the year, our weather is better, but that's why Mr. Carrier invented Air Conditioning.

Anonymous, I invite you to stay where you are, we don't need more ignorant people here.
Anyone who wants to be a professional where respect is a two way street, I invite you compare payscale vs cost of living and move on down.
The South isn't perfect, but it's improving. Is Chicago?
