I commuted by bicycle to my downtown office job that day. Since the weather was pleasant and sunny, most people were driving with their windows rolled down. At every stoplight, I noticed every single car without exception had the news stations turned up on their car radios. Not one note of music floated out of those car windows. No talk or laughter between the driver and the passengers. Quiet. Just the sound of traffic moving through the streets - tires turning at the corners, a squeaky brake here and there, engines idling. Later I noticed more silence - the lack of air traffic overhead. The world's busiest airport stood still that day. And then some time around mid-afternoon, I heard the unmistakable roar of a jet fighter overhead and thought "Somebody's got our backs." It was about the only reassuring thought I could muster on 9/11.
God bless and protect all of our first-responders and fighting men and women.

Wow. How time passes. I remember in the months after 911 - people coming up to us and saying thank you, I couldn't do your job, and we don't get paid enough to do what we do. Today, they've made police the enemy. Be carful out there.

Hard to believe it's been 14 years. I was working the help desk back then, and after the first tower was hit, and the whole world was freaking out....we got multiple calls from people asking that we bring them a TV to their office!
Not only did we NOT have TVs to hand out, we certainly wouldn't be able to hook them up to cable, either. And lets not forget that they could walk down the hallway to several state-of-the-art conference rooms that had TV and working cable.
After all these years, I still cannot believe how obtuse these people were. I hope that 14 years later they are still ashamed for their selfish, childlike demands.
May we never forget that horrific day.

All this time, and I still can't put much together -- I guess the shock was that great. Living 016, everything pretty good considering, then on that beautiful morning it's "TURN ON THE TV!" Jesus. At first I thought it was a fizzle or "dirty bomb," seeing those buildings coming down in that huge cloud of dust. Occurs to me now that it was preventable, better-secured cockpits, armed flight deck crew, and perhaps better-trained and-treated Air Marshals outside that door. Box cutter, s__t. Here's a nice hot purpose-designed plastic round right between your miserable eyes -- and have a couple more.
What bothered me the most was really the MSM talking heads repeating and repeating, "Things will never be the same. Things will never be the same." Sounded like a foregone conclusion -- as though they had gotten something they wanted. No "conspiracy theory," just noticeable as they actually promoted a goal of terrorism; that being that government restrictions on citizens would make life more miserable than a few terrorists could ever do.

* Poor nutty woman at the drugstore I'd patronized for years suddenly covered with ribbons and flag pins and bothering me about the small bag I carried to pick up my local papers every Thursday afternoon.
* Walgreens at Howard and Western with the shopping carts piled up eight feet high in front of the entrance like a fortress, all chained together, with one min-wage rent-a-cop standing there glowering with a billy club. Gosh darn, Achmed, go around the block and we'll park our truck bomb at the completely unprotected loading dock around the side...like anyone was after Walgreens in the first place.
* The quiet when O'Hare stopped flying -- and the unabashed Daley political move of having Pres. Bush stop off at the Norwood on his way to O'Hare for his "Let's get 'em up again" speech. Everyone turned out with signs and flags and completely forgot about the devastation of blocks and blocks flooded out by Daley's "flood preventer" caps on the street drains. We had had heavy rains right before, and it took Streets and San literally one front-end loader and three leased semi-dumps to clear out the ruined, flooded carpeting and paneling and belongings from just ONE of many blocks of wrecked basements around St. Adalbert's. Master Daley stroke, everyone forgot all about it.
Today? The legacy of cameras all over, the gnawing lack of a sense of security in a shaky, feverish, built-upon-sand economy as additional restrictions, taxes, thou-shalt-nots are imposed on the easy-to-find working population while the country is deliberately flooded with often-unknown, untraceable, disappearing aliens of all stripes.
Doesn't hit me as bad as others, perhaps, because I saw the deterioration really kick off after 1964. Seen our own city burn once already, have seen vast tracts of it become and remain unusable. No imported terrorist could have wiped the slate clean of the manufacturing base that once sustained this town.
Still, we go from day to day, enjoying the good times, the good moments that God gives us. That which we hold in our hearts, no one can take from us.
14 years, and we are still here, still kickin'.
Pray for the dead, and remember and help the living. Treasure especially the young and the old -- they are our future, and our past. Draw family and friends closer, and remember all that is wonderful that life has to offer.

I remember the Chicago people, offering us dinner, offering praise now they want to spit on coppers thanks to the government media complex! On that day I had the assignment of being at 35th street. When My girlfriend called me to tell me find a TV. I walked into the Operations command desk on 5th floor where the two officers there had the TV on watching WTTW. (Cooking show)
Even the Street Deputy had no clue what was going on in NY. He was on his way home
Then the second plane hits the tower and all hell broke loose.
Lieutenants' were ordering personal out of building in uniform even if they had no uniform to put on. Long drive home to get uniforms and see what was actually happening.

Worked at 35th and Michigan, it was still a new building people were getting used to. I was young, working for the adult probation dept. but worked in ident. section. Overslept and was running late to work. Traffic down archer didn't seem right, pager kept going off too. Pulled over to use a payphone to see what was happening. Thought they were telling me to pick up some coffee on the way or something. I was told the building was being evacuated and to turn around. Had no idea what was happening, was too busy thinking of excuses why I was late rather than listening to the news as I drove. Had no idea this country would never be the same again after that call. On a side note- it was a lil funny to see guys in the building that hadn't worn a uniform in years (mandatory for ALL officers in the dept.) squeeze into them, buttons were projectile weapons waiting to go off lol

For me, one of the most memorable aspects of that time was that for the first and only time of my 54 year life, we were ALL AMERICANS. No black, white, democrat, republican. We were ALL simply AMERICANS.

Once again, President Communist is betraying the US Constitution (a document that he despises) by claiming that the accord with Iran is not a "treaty" and not subject to the 2/3 ratification requirement in the Constitution. Obama could never secure 2/3 of the vote in the US Senate to approve this sell out of Israel and the USA.
Someone in Washington needs to file a lawsuit and have a Federal Court judge rule that the document is a treaty and subject to Senate ratification.

As a new teacher I remember from the windows of Phillips HS we could see the Sears tower and the fighter jets circling around downtown. Students were terrified and the Board had to decide whether to dismiss children or were they safer at the school.

I was at the Marine Unit on 9/11. Downtown was evacuated. First time in my life, Chicago downtown evacuated. I was told to take binoculars and watch for aircraft over the lake. I spotted two aircraft coming west from the Michigan side flying low and next to each other. I called it in, they were headed right for downtown.
Turns out it was two F-16's loaded for bear, missiles and extra tanks taking up Combat Air Patrol over downtown.
Now that is something you don't see every day. The real deal; that was not a drill. Best thing I saw that day.

Do we have enough immigrants yet? The 19 hijackers violated the conditions of their visas, and were issued drivers licenses (by State of Florida, mostly) which they used as ID to board the aircraft. Neither of these problems have been addressed because the Republicans businessmen want cheap labor and the Democrats always get the immigrant vote. Every wonder what the last years of Rome were like? We're living it.

You'll never get 100% of all people to agree on anything. 9-11 is no exception.
Still, overall, there was a feeling of unity among the people of this country.
I chose to ignore the crackpot conspiracy theorists. You know the ones: White as well as Black, who swore Bush engineered the entire thing?

You won't be able to find most of them to get them to leave -- same as with the disease-bearing flood of "UACs" -- Unaccompanied Alien Children -- that Obama let across our southern border. Each was given a piece of paper bearing -- well, whatever name they chose to use -- and a date for them to show up at an immigration court for a hearing.
Approx. 86% of them have never been seen again.
It will be the same in Europe. Many -- well, unknowns -- will melt away into the Muslim "no-go zones," the "bain-liues" where even the police are afraid to go in unless with armored cars and a massive show of force. There, radical, destructive Islam will continue to fester and grow. Reinforcements have arrived -- and it will be in the millions.

I was at the Marine Unit on 9/11. Downtown was evacuated. First time in my life, Chicago downtown evacuated. I was told to take binoculars and watch for aircraft over the lake. I spotted two aircraft coming west from the Michigan side flying low and next to each other. I called it in, they were headed right for downtown.
Turns out it was two F-16's loaded for bear, missiles and extra tanks taking up Combat Air Patrol over downtown.
Now that is something you don't see every day. The real deal; that was not a drill. Best thing I saw that day.

Who evacuated downtown? How was it done? I lived downtown and nobody told me. No squad cars traveled up and down the streets saying 'evacuate now'. No sirens went off. No news alerts occurred (and I was watching two channels of news-only) ordering people out of downtown.
If you mean people decided not to go to work, or went home early from work, or many offices closed (like a lot of them did in Sears Tower), that's something different. Downtown might have been emptier than usual, but there was no evacuation.

Citywide 4, we were told downtown was being told to empty out. Certainly not the most organized of operations. I was on the lakefront and we kept German fighters and bombers away. I wouldn't expect the mumbling midget to actually take command. If you were in a beat car, I expect you didn't hear it. If you want to argue about it I'll save you the trouble, you win. I'm retired, that is my memory.
