Tax Hike "Not Enough"

  • A $500 million property tax increase will not be enough to solve Chicago’s $30 billion pension crisis or rid the city of the junk bond rating that has saddled the taxpayers with tens of millions in penalties and borrowing costs, analysts concluded Tuesday.

Civic Federation President Laurence Msall and Matt Fabian, a partner at Municipal Market Analytics, offered the grim assessment during a lively panel discussion on city finances before a packed house at a City Club of Chicago luncheon.

The title of the discussion was: “Fiscal Cliff: What’s Next for Chicago Finances.”
How about massive cuts in services? Gut extraneous layers of "assistant to the assistant" and "deputy" spots? MAybe Rahm could have Ed Burke stop banning stuff like sugary drinks and trans-fats and foie gras so that pensioners die fat, happy and earlier, thereby saving the pension?

Maybe someone could start a petition to cut the number of aldercreatures in ...half maybe? Oh wait, we tried that once, barely got a few thousand signatures. Maybe if a "civic federation president" got behind the effort? Or is he just another "Tool of Rahm"?

How much has the City spent on the Riverwalk? Northerly Island? Maggie Daley Park?

How about start selling off the Flowerpots in the median strips all over the City? Sell them off and make the BUYER do the landscaping. I'd like to see how much Christy's is charging the City for watering flowers.

There is only one solution, even more taxes. Is anyone thinks they can avoid paying much higher taxes and tries to leave Chicago/Cook Co./Illinois than tax them for every penny they own just for the right to leave. Pay up or stay put. It is for the children and the pensions.

Raise the minimum retirement age to 57. Perhaps raise the maximum retirement age too, say 67?

You have forgotten the biggest way to save the budget. You see... In springfield, they passed a law that if you smoke on a college campus, that is a A warning first B) followed by a 25 dollar fine and a third violation is a 100 dollar fine. Since there are 50k students and countless others who walk on sidewalks that are on one side a college campus, the other side, the City of Chicago you can write all the tickets you want on the college side and make millions in revenue. It will make the speed camera's look like a lemonade stand.

What about cutting the pensions of the aldermen? I keep hearing about "shared" sacrifices by the mayor. What about starting in his office with cutting their pensions in city hall?

You can never overtax a population; however, you can fail to tax them enough to sustain efficient government and essential services. I cannot understand how people who live quite well can complain about paying their fair share of taxes.

property tax increases probably needs to be at least $3 billion(or more) a year going forward.

Of course, this money will be allocated to "buy" votes for the social fascist power structure, not solve Chicongo fiscal problemos

I know it. You know it. Everybody knows it.

Fire the mayor first replacing him with someone who can actually do the job! Then fire 45 aldermen they are useless as tits on a bull! Then kill the tif's aka slush fund! The new mayor should embrace a novel thought PAY BILLS & QUIT BORROWING MONEY!

The scam is the following:

Mayor Prick beat the drum against pensions, then publicly stopped that game on cue because it was now time to prepare us for the tax increases coming. See, now he acts as if he IS going to fund pensions because he has no choice. Once he has that bullshit sold to the gullible and gets his desire tax increases (thereby increasing TIF money by the same amount), he'll start beating the drum again about pensions. He already has his good buddy Msall and the rest of his toolbox of media doing it for him.

So one he's gotten his tax increases using the excuse he's paying for pensions, he'll go back to having his buddies beat the drum to once again kill pensions. He's already got his buddy Msall and the rest of his toolbox media doing it for him.

See, the goal is to use pensions as the excuse to enrich his buddies NOT pay for pensions.

Once he's conned the stupid into giving him the cash he'll have his buddies work to kill the pensions and viola!!! More free cash for his buddies that was never going to go to pensions in the first place.

This game is called the long con. It's not for the stupid to understand because if it doesn't happen in a week most are too stupid believe it.

The taxes are coming. The pension will be cut. The rich will get richer and the corporate welfare spigot will be running faster than ever, thanks to government employees and pensions.

Taxes will be raised BEFORE the election.

Pension slashing will be put ON the 2016 ballot.

He will get billions more in graft money.

Enjoy your cat food.

Speaking of dying young take a look at page 5 of the below 1990 CHICAGO POLICE STAR magazine; 29 officers died while still active (3 of them In the Line of Duty.

THEN, look at page 15 !!! Guys retiring with 43 years on the job!! Age 67 or 68 years old!!

Start writing up residents for not having their address on their homes and garages. From what I've seen there's at least half the garages on most blocks don't have numbers on them. At $100 or $200 a pop, that's some nice money to collect.

CPD has always had plenty of Deputy Chiefs. Back in the '70s we had 7 Patrol Division Deputies, 3 in Detective Division, 1 or 2 in Traffic, 1 or 2 in Administrative Services, and possibly 1 in Neighborhood Relations. Possibly others tucked away in the other Bureaus and Divisions.

Laurence Msall has taken a "sucks to be them" approach on public pensions.

Where the fuck where you Larry when your political pals spent the pension money instead of putting it in the funds for the last 25 years.

If Msall has all the answers and the Civic Federation is here to help, why aren't the Elected Officials following the advice?
Oh, the top heavy City,State and County boards have their "experts" doing their magic.
Ok, Msall the non -partisan, won't peep a word about Daley. Rahm, Quinn or anyone for that matter.
So,why does the Civic Federation exist?
The Democrats have been getting enough good advice from some of the top financial advisors in the country.
Problem is that only Daley, Rahm, Friends and Family are the only ones that have benefited 100 times over.
If the City could lobby for the City (hypothetical), Chicago would the equivalent of Dubai.
Oh boy, I'm stocking up on sugary drinks.

It's a systemic problem that's infecting city government and associated agencies. This spending problem ranges from alderman losing an election and immediately transitioning into a 100 plus k city job. Or having union truck drivers chauffer electricians or tree trimmers to a job site and sit in the truck while the others do their work. Withouy drastic reform this city is doomed. Oh, did I forget yo nention the huge pension bump up for exempt ranks in the police department?

This is nothing new. Chicago is just like cities, towns and villages across the US that passed the buck until there is no more buck to pass. All of you crying about the parks and flowers are wasting your energy. Those are funded from sources that CANNOT fund to the pension. Take it up with the union leaders who dropped the ball so many years ago. It's an archaic system that is not sustainable. Sadly, taxes and higher contributions are the way to go unless someone can drop 500 million into the pot. Oh, that's right, Illinois cannot even pay it's lottery dues so that cannot happen.

9/09/2015 02:26:00 PM

Pension debt is future debt. The 500 million is each year. Now that 500 million is only the raised amount not the total in taxes paid. Breath easy and look a little harder then the top line in a dead tree newspaper.

RAHM will never release the average amount all tax payers pay:

10 % on people gas bill
com ed tax 16$ on 119$ bill
Gasoline tax
cell phone tax
downtown tax
theater tax
sewer tax
water tax
water bottle tax
house tax
taxi tax
city sticker
business license
constructions permits

you get the point. So when you do a budget your self ask do you count the gas bill from 30 years in the future?
RAHM needs to just fund are pensions to 80% and all will be normal.
Don't forget nobody is talking about WEED or CASINO'S cash cows.

How about cutting stupid programs like the so called Safe Passage? Why the hell is my money being used to pay parents to walk their own damn kids to school? I already take care of them from cradle to grave, plus their ghetto lottery bullshit. Chicago has a spending problem...not a tax problem. Cut the upper administration jobs at CPS, CTA, CPD, CFD and the local corrupt government. Take a good look around...every piece of property you see generates money. Quit spending it on bullshit services to buy votes. Start charging us for garbage pickup??? Are you kidding me? We have always paid for that, it's just another shell game by Chicago Crooks to steal more of our hard earned money. Tax sugar drinks by the ounce? Go fuck yourself. Since when is it the governments business to financially punish me for purchasing and consuming a soft drink. This fucking city is out of it's mind. Clear them all out, and start over. You want something...EARN IT !!! Fuck you and your bullshit entitlement programs. The only thing you are entitled to is what you earn. Plain and simple. You want a better life...work hard and earn it. You want to be treated fairly in society, then don't demand free stuff from others. Contribute to society and then talk about fairness. This country was built on workers, it will be destroyed by leeches and politicians. Our Constitution said all people are created equal and should be afforded opportunities and the right to pursue their dreams. Right now some groups are treated way better than others, with access to better opportunities and normal stats that are lowered to allow them access to housing, medical care, colleges and creature comforts. This is not equal treatment. Quit giving people free shit, because it's not free, I pay for it.

Take his garbage collection scheme.........

Problem is.....certain parts of the city will not pay...then what. No garbage collection? I don't think so. It will still happen because there will,be rat infestation.

If we don't pay, we get punished with a SPAR. Again, the working stiffs...get stiffed. All he is doing is getting the money back from where he has the most control, the workers.

If they came up with a plan that was even across the board, I wouldn't argue, but you all know that will not be the case.
