Preliminary Numbers (UPDATES)

  • A man was stabbed to death on Labor Day and at least seven other people were fatally shot over the long holiday weekend in Chicago. Those shot to death were among at least 43 people shot from Friday night to Monday evening.

A 23-year-old man was pronounced dead after being shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood at 7:47 p.m., police said.

The man, who was on parole, was shot in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Gee, a parolee involved in yet another crime, this time as a target. Maybe if people (and folks) served more of their sentences, they wouldn't be out to become victims.

We await HeyJackass.com for verification of the actual numbers this weekend.

UPDATE: The Tribune paywalled the story and upped the totals to 9 dead and 46 wounded.

UPDATE: HeyJackass has checked in - 9 dead, 46 wounded and the death investigation at Garfield Park was not among the totals. For comparison purposes:
  • 2014 Labor Day weekend tally: 7 killed, 37 wounded
2013 Labor Day weekend tally: 12 killed, 27 wounded
A significant increase in people with extra holes, but thanks to medical technology and prompt ambulance responses, an average number of deaths.

Anyone know what was going on with ISP last night? Was on my way back from VRI on I90 when this car was tailgating an ISP squad. Then the car began to pace with ISP next to it. I was about to call it in when I saw bunch of ISP behind me lights and sirens and they pulled over the car near the Irving Park exit.

Anyone else notice that shootings and homicides are up this year after many past years. Guns recovered from the street are about normal from years past but police shootings are pretty way down. Why is that? Shootings, homicides and guns are up ao you thing police shootings would keep pace from years past... Is it because coppers are terrified of being the next Darren Wilson? They are thinking more before shooting and are letting scenarios play out longer before they shoot. This could be bad for officer safety but, no coppers have been shot this year... So, the big question is now how come it works now? How come now guys are using their head before shooting which is resulting in less police related shootings. This observation was told to me from a friend, who is not the police... It really does bring up a great point. Have the police been quick to shoot in the past? I though to myself maybe coppers are just laying down more this year... Not true, more contact cards, more arrests and more guns recovered this year as compared to last year... So the stops are still happening... An interesting argument to say the least. From the citizen perspective this restraint that is being used now should always be used... The numbers do add up and they theory does make sense... The thought of becoming the next ferguson cop has made cops think harder about pulling the trigger here in Chicago.. Elsewhere in the country cops are tragically dying, but not in the city of Chicago.. We are doing the same work with a ton less police shootings... Should always be like this I think... That's more true than you think. People rarely get murdered in prison. As we let an increasing number of "black and brown people" out of jail, expect those homicide demographics to increase.

These egomaniacs need to realize that police can do very little to take the intent to murder out of the heart of another man. Sure, it's OK to deploy resources to areas that are in need and to make sure that people are doing their job but don't kick and scream when angry, violent people with low IQ continue to kill each other. Don't belittle the policemen who are risking their lives for a thankless ignorant community. We didn't create the problem and we won't be able to solve the problem.

True we have to make sure "Blue lives matter" = "Blue lives protected!" When you get a call you wait for backup, no more rolling in, wait a couple blocks minimum before approaching as your back up arrives! Doesn't make a difference how long it takes wait! We have to be sure job #1 is going home safe after your tour no matter what else happens!

On another note looks like alderman Mike zalewski got his way! Precinct worker told me today that if you have anymore than 2 trash cans they will be removing them! now wait Mike many of us are now in Burke's and Quinn/Madigan's ward after the cut up, why don't you just do it in your 23rd ward? Are you going to be sure to remove all the trash bins from "minority areas" also? People on the west end of 008 keep the area clean, throw trash in carts but with your goofy idea do you want more rats? More trash all over? Your already behind the $12.00 a month pick up fee plus the huge tax on home owners increase is that not double taxation? You have really done nothing with "your ward" look at Archer Av, nice business strip correct? Let's hope my Alderman Eddie Burke tells you "Not in 14th ward" you pay attention to your area Mike don't ruin everything! I know minor issue to you, but another hair brained scheme! So if you have an extra can hose it out and place in your yard garage but then again will the city pick up the garbage! Mike maybe if we have extra garbage we could just put it behind your house because surely all your garbage is picked up!

The officers have adjusted to today's needs. You need contact card numbers to earn overtime, so you get contact cards. That doesn't mean you are getting any police work done, that just means you have gotten good at the game.

As a supervisor with some time on and a brain in my head I will tell you that there is very little proactive police work being done. This does not bode well for the future of policing in Chicago. The young are not learning police work. They are learning how to play the Compstat game, though. You will have an inexperienced and unmotivated Department soon. Not only will they not know how to do any investigating and they will have no desire to. They are now afraid to, but hey, less bad guys are getting shot. That's great, right?

The bad guys are gaining a lot of ground. The Media, the lawyers, the race baiting hucksters and politicians are helping them. Good people should start taking notice.

Because the city doesn't hire as many new cops as they use to, you get smaller groups which is easier to put with veteran officers. When you had lots of new officers they had to be put together a lot sooner which is when some problems came-up. You had gung-ho officers racing into the middle of trouble without the needed experience to handle it. Now the vets can say, slow down tiger, this is the right way to do it.

Perfect example of bureaucratic bloat. Bottom line - you don't need that many chiefs - no matter what "tribe" you are in.

CUT THE BUDGET! CUT THE FAT! AND then see what you need to do in raising people's taxes.

Between the extra chiefs and their salaries and benefits, 20-25 Aldermen and their staffs and ward budgets, I could find HALF the money already proposed in $500 Million in Tax hikes - if not MORE.

CUT OUT ALL THESE EXTRA people. That's where the savings really are. Raise taxes and you'll chase people out of the city.

When you cut all these people out - no services are getting cut, just highly paid patronage stooges. You may even be able to add 20-40 cops on the street - or pay down the underfunded pension.

Compared to your Mayor, I'm Albert F'king Einstein.

Now I'll play The Cops Advocate. Maybe shootings are way up because the police are using more restraint and the criminals have become Embolden. THAT IS A HORRIBLE THING! All these anarchist running around are making our nation less safe, not more so. Emboldening thugs does not win the day. Intimidating officers does not help our people.

I am not a cop but that thin blue line needs the support of the people they protect. They need our prayers and our encouragement. They represent us, Our laws, The laws that we as a community have elected our leaders to pass as they represent us. Each time a thug disrespects an officer, they disrespect us. they disrespect our civility and civilization. WE ARE THE PEOPLE, WE DEMAND OBEDIENCE OF OUR COMMUNITY STANDARDS. Strange thing is - Freddy's family has not even filed a civil suit yet ! The city decided just to pay off now. Also - that city has a max cap of $400,000 in any civil suit - yes a cap. Juries have award more - only to have state court of appeals give the max of $400,000. Not to mention paying them ANYTHING before the criminal trial is even started makes cops look like they did something wrong - so they just further tainted a potential jury pool - Bad move by the incompetent Mayor of that city

All units should be 10-4. But when your partner's time due is turned down do you give in work alone so he can have off? Now your stuck with a goof if you ask for a partner. The union demanded this stuff 25 years ago and within days we submarined ourselves.

Before the rank and file sticks together I fear a tragedy will have to happen here. Look at your next roll call a see if I'm right.
