Really Pam?

  • Speed Cameras in the city are designed to slow down traffic and make it safer for children crossing streets near parks and schools. But critics tell 2 Investigator Pam Zekman some of the cameras are nothing more than money-makers for the city.

Some locations are obvious — like ones directly across from schools and busy parks. But the location of some of the city’s most profitable speed cameras beg the question: What are they really for?
Newsflash! Any camera placed where the speed changes drastically from the normal limit to the 20 MPH for schools and parks is going to be a money maker - people just don't slow down that quick if traffic is flowing. This has been pointed out for years now, but Channel 2 is just catching up?

What next?

Red light cameras are money makers and do nothing to increase the safety of intersections, but rather increase the frequency of rear-end collisions? Here's a spoiler for Channel 2 - that's exactly what they do!

Red-light cameras are problematic because of the increased rear-end collisions. True. But I gotta disagree on the speed cameras. If people don't want to be victimized by these "money-makers", here's some advice: ANTICIPATE SPEED LIMIT CHANGES. This phenomenon has been with us since the automobile itself. Open your eyes, pay attention and you will save yourself the cost of a ticket.

Don't forget to tell her that the politicians have given millions of tax dollars to their campaign donors and friends in the system.
Oh wait, nobody gives a fuck. Pull the wool over the people's eyes. Put the cops on the front page so business can continue as usual.

None of her friends and colleagues know these simple facts, so why should Pammy?
They really do live in their own little bubble.

Maybe that's why they banned plastic shopping bags in Chicago. They fit perfectly over the camera.

I've been gone from the city for more than a few years. But, one question? Zekman is still alive and reporting? On TV? OK, OK I said one question.

Unfortunately, just a sign of things to come. Speed cameras are common throughout Europe with hefty fines, almost $300 US per violation. There is a growing call in this country to take the police out of traffic stops and let the cameras do the job. Imagine speed cameras on the Dan Ryan? Why, our pension would be fully funded the first year !!

The park speed zone on Colombus just north if Wacker must be a hold mine! One dinky sign and 4 lanes of traffic in each side

The article stated Alderman don't put and make no decisions on the cameras at those positions/locations, but does NOT have name in who is actually in charge of putting them there! Who signs off on the orders!

Just like a court case: name the criminal defendant in charge of putting those cameras out there, so that the people can go to their offices and demand answers or their jobs!

Really ridiculous way to run government in Chicago!
Nobody has a name that is in charge because they would get their asses launched from their jobs!

Poor reporting by Pam Zekman by the way!
Hey Pam, Get a name of somebody and hold their asses to the public fire!

What school or park is the camera covering at 52/Western? What is the purpose of the camera on 127th just east of Parnell? There's not even a sidewalk on the south side of the street where the camera is, and no residences. And how about the camera at St. Rita on 77/Western. If they really cared about the children, that camera would be further south by the CTA station where kids actually cross.

Way to beat red light cameras? Will the "Rahm crew" pay the "rahm tax" when they drive those big gas hogging black tanks right though red lights?

Put them up everywhere on expressways like in European countries. The pension system would be funded 100%
State would have money to burn. Ryan express lanes alone would bring in billions.
In Arizona they finally took them down. System probably broke from overuse. One person I know was rushing back to airport. Got 3 separate citations in mail for his driving a few weeks later. They were fine only citations which is a good idea. Not movers counting towards suspension of DL. I am all for speed cameras.

It's only a matter of time until the citizenry get completely fed up with being over policed by these cameras and take some extraordinary action in rebellion. Sure they've been complaining; all onto deaf ears. Sure they've been writing letters, barking (nicely) at politicians; all onto deaf (ignoring)ears. Sure they've been hoping that someone or some group of vigilantes will make the speed and red light cameras the target or their rage, but alas, nothing. But, this is becoming an increasing volatile topic nationwide and normal everyday people are getting increasingly hostile about it. Some see them and a necessary evil and plan to tolerate their invasion into their lives, but many others are angry and fed up of being victimized, not by a thug but by the government/politicians and their quest for cash. More liquid income for them to waste. I can see a movement soon where these devices are routinely damaged and made inoperable, and the cameras that will then be installed to watch the cameras will be destroyed too, unless they choose to just mask-up and have their rebellious actions recorded to send a message.

(OT) Pam psssst over here, put your glasses on girls! Holy Cross hospital is in 2 years going to be trauma center with help from university of Chicago lol! The old RIP George Carlin nimby (not in my back yard) theory "put it over there away from us rich folks!" Looks like the hospital that paid Michelle Obama $350,000 + per year for a job that immediately was eliminated when she left! Hmm why not open 1 there also? Plenty of major trauma wonder why dumping them on holy cross? Who gave the Manila envelope? Typical Chicago rah! Rah! We screwed citizens again!

Why is nobody spray painting the cameras? It can't be that hard to disable them without doing too much damage. Another poster suggested plastic bags covering them. Come on Chicago residents. Show your ingenuity to city hall!

I would prefer drivers looking at their driving, not their speedometers. I hate driving through the areas with the speed traps. Erratic driving, jamming on the brakes and then speeding right after to make up for lost time or to get around the boneheads that can't navigate a simple street.

My personal favorite is the two cameras on Cicero and Petersen. All the slicksters that want to avoid them drive down the side streets to get by them. Of course they are heavy on the petal to make up for lost time. This takes them by the school. Good traffic management there, but it's really about the money not the kids.

A set of blue lights and a copper issuing a citation is the only thing that keeps traffic safe. Look at how bad drivers have gotten since they cut our manpower.

That spray grease works good too. It has a jet nozzle like WD40. Any oil of any type will fog the lens.

Near Curie HS on Pulaski there are 3 different speed limit signs within 320 feet. 35 mph then 30 then 20. If that isn't a speed trap what is?

I was told that those cameras are always on. They could catch you turning on red, no turn signal, no brake lights etc... All they have to do is review the stored video. Guess you have to sneak up from behind!
