- Look out, New York City. Chicago is ringing in 2016 with a big outdoor celebration and a twist on the Times Square countdown and ball drop.
The epic, first-of-its-kind New Year’s Eve event dubbed Chi-Town Rising will feature music headliners, a “visually spectacular countdown to 2016,” and a major fireworks show, organizers announced Thursday. The celebration will be televised live on NBC 5.
We're surprised this hasn't been tried before. The logistics are fairly simple, the amount of graft and cash money available for the political taking is extensive and it's during what is usually a pretty cold night, so opportunities for mayhem will be limited.

I thought we were broke. I'll be nice and toasty, inside my house with my wife and kid. Unfortunately my tax dollars will be blowing in the northwest wind downtown.
Rather be there than Englewood. Since I have to work NYE, it's an upgrade for me.

If the live broadcast of the celebration is not delayed long enough to edit out the mob violence, we might see more fireworks than intended.
First night in the last 10 years I've been off on NYE. I guess I'll miss another one.

Jane Byrne, the Best Mayor we ever had, held a grand fireworks extravaganza on the riverfront on one New Years Eve. It was a colorful and wonderful as fights of pyrotechnics seem to burst between the buildings. The rumblings of the thunder and colored lightning they produced was something you would never forget.
Too bad I'll be in Arizona for this one.
Let's ring in the new year of murders, agg batts, robbery, burglary, and rape. What a shithole, just another way to attract shit bags downtown. Cannot wait to leave here. No happiness or peace in this hellhole.

I had a great time! Las Vegas, it's worth the plane trip and you have to check it out at least once in your life at that time of the year! Woo! WHOO!!!!

Aviation police not allowed to carry weapons, even though through same training as CPD, have to qualify same way we have to what kind of insanity is this? Aviation police if you look it up make less than CPD, why not save money and arm them? Many say you need clout to be at airport "aviation police" OK sure guess the scholarship program for CPD is not clout!

Last time I was downtown for NYE was 1999.
You would like that CTA would have added more buses and trains to handle the crowds, but they did not. I had to wait for over an hour for a CTA Bus to get from 500 N. Michigan to 3200 N. Sheridan Road. Many buses passed me by because there were already full beyond capacity.
They said "private donations" will pay for this "event" - I've heard that crap before...

This problem can be quickly solved by replacing a fire commander with a police commander. Why place a retired fire chief in charge of the Aviation Police? Because of politics? Now the rumor is that the fire commander wants to replace the current aviation police that are certified as police officers with retired firemen? Why is there a conflict between aviation police and CPD? This could easily be resolved with effective leadership. But then where can anyone find effective leadership in this city?
Will this be like the pathetic great Chicago fire extravaganza on the river? They say private donors are paying for this venture but over here behind the curtain who is paying for extra police fire all the extraneous city services? Who is donating to who?
Don't worry, the cubs will never make it happen.
OT. I think all the Aviation Police should wear an empty holster every shift. It would be a real cluster flock detaining them all and searching their cars, lockers etc. That wouldn't last long though cuz their non police police chief would probably ban holsters.
