Dear God, No

  • Taste of Chicago posted $320,205 in profit this summer, according to city figures, continuing an erratic trend of profits and losses at the Grant Park festival in recent years, officials said Sunday.

Taste lost just over $169,000 last year, when rains canceled the one and only Saturday for the event. The festival turned a profit of $272,000 in 2013 and lost a whopping $1.3 million in 2012. The city announced the 2015 numbers late Sunday evening.
And we don't believe a word of it. There's too much cash floating around there - so much, that we're surprised year after year that a concerted effort to rob one of the money runs hasn't occurred at some point. That "erratic trend" is likely a shell game depending on the political winds blowing at the time.

A smaller, pricier Taste might be more appropriate at a location like Navy Pier might be the better trend.

Just kill the Taste already. No more reincarnations of it - just kill it dead. Bury it deep so it can't come back.

Food that's overpriced crap, pick pockets, over priced parking, traffic, wilding thugs, taxes on food, carry out containers, water, soda?, etc. Special surcharges, red light cameras, speed cameras - forget all of that nonsense.

Lots and lots of summer festivals all over State (and in surrounding States) that don't suffer from any of the above.

We're going to FOIA the books for this debacle and see how cooked the books are. Our guess is that they are well done. If they added in the extra police presence, traffic aids, damage to the park grass and gardens, etc, etc, etc, there isn't a chance in hell that it made money.

Minnesota moved their Taste of MN to the boonies after the Mississippi flooded the regular spot. Best thing they ever did. A distinct lack of thugs and St Paul people (BIRM).

that would bring it full circle. "chicagofest" began on the pier but soon overwhelmed it. the reader reported "fecal grease balls" floating in the lake from the excess sewage.

"fecal grease balls" floating in the lake?? Come on now, I highly doubt the aldercreatures went for a swim in the lake. There's no pond scum there for them to suck up.

Taste. What a joke. Just what I want to do on a summer night. Eat mediocre food with thousands of strangers in the heat. Nothing sanitary or tasty about any of it. Kill this beast once and for all please.

Several years ago, when the Taste was still 10 days long, I was standing around with my partner, waiting for roll call. We walked past an unmarked trailer just as its door opened. Inside my partner and I saw Ed Burke sitting at a table that had a pile of cash on it, while he was counting some himself. My partner and look at each other with that "WTF" look. We go sit at a table and about 10 minutes later, Burke leaves with his bodyguard and he's carrying a lockbox. The true cash numbers from the Taste will never be known.

Lets see
+320,205 2015
-169,000 2014
+272,000 2013
-1,300,000 2012

Thats -876,795 in total. Canceling would be the right thing to do, so they won't....

I worked it rdo this year. Did not see a whole lot of "tastes" of different foods as in previous(8-10 yrs ago) fests. I can get Giordanos, hot dogs, Al's beef, etc on my own time, for far cheaper too. At least back in the olden days of pure profit Taste you did not mind paying 4 tickets for an ear of corn from Reillys Daughter. Never saw it on the menu at the bar...but it sure was good out there on Columbus for soaking up the cheap beer.

Annoying loud shitheads acting a fucking fool everywhere, overpriced crap I can get for cheaper just going to the actual joint, no parking, constantly keeping an eye on surroundings, jagoffs looking for trouble, to hustle, or to pickpocket, unsanitary conditions, and the icing on the cake- giving more of my money to the shit hole city!! You know I'll be there!
