Raise Taxes More?

  • Determined to bite the bullet and get it over with, aldermen on Monday questioned why Mayor Rahm Emanuel is not proposing an even bigger property tax increase instead of assuming that Gov. Bruce Rauner will sign a bill that gives Chicago more time to shore up police and fire pensions.

“What I’m detecting here is an appetite to get this over with one way or the other and not keep coming back and doing it again and again,” said Ald. Edward Burke (14th), chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee.
Not a word about cutting waste, eliminating fraud or redundancy, reforming spending/contracts/rigged bidding. No, just "why don't we raise taxes even more?"How about eliminating 25 aldercreatures?

"How about eliminating 25 aldercreatures?"

...and the remaining 25, having been relegated to the S&S "grid system" like the rest of the garbage, won't be in their offices -- but the hanger-on answering the phone, if you can ever get to them, will, if pressed hard, affect to tap out your problem (not "issue") into the semi-functional 311 thing.

There! See what I have done. Where's my paycheck?

The pic of Rahm "above the fold" in the upper right-hand corner always works, though.

We elect our aldermen/women for their good and common sense. We should go along with their decisions. If pensions are going to be paid, taxes will have to be raised significantly. High taxes may be one of the prices that have to be paid for the privilege of living in one of the highest quality of life cities in the nation. Be happy we are not living in some hell hole city in Indiana or Iowa.

What you are "detecting" while diddling with your colorful Fisher-Price smartphone during critical mayoral addresses to the indispensable City Council seems to be pictures of cowboy hats.

Time for you to be placed under lightning-quick, rubber-stamped state guardianship. Notice to you, or to anyone you know, will be "waived." CFD will twist you up in a sheet on the word of a total stranger, and haul you off to a hooked-up nursing home, despite your refusals of service. Message goes flying to ISP, "Pull FOID." Your assets are now under the control of some character you never heard of, working out of some "suite" on the 20th floor of a downtown building.

All for your own protection, of course.

Think I'm kidding?

Cut out the b.s. about paying for garbage pickup.

This is going to pit neighbor against neighbor, cause fly-trashing in the middle of the night and the bills will never, ever be equitable.

Next year, the garbage collection bill will increase, and the next year it will go up even more. Let's just say no to this one.

Yeah, most of them will be rusted junk, but I bet there might be some decent ones in the few hundred that they buy back.

Question I have is if Chicago ever gets a casino, and our lovely mayor holds true to his word ( which you know he won't ) and uses the casino revenue to help fund the police/fire pensions will our property taxes get lowered. FAT CHANCE IN HELL...... just can't wait to move out of Illinois

From the mouth of a millionaire who enjoys private protection from the CPD, personal street cleaning in both summer and winter (curb to curb) from Streets and Sanitation Dept., and reduced property tax bill on his 5000sq foot property from the Cook County Assessor. Anyone else want to weigh in on what this fool is fleecing from the average tax paying Chicagoan?

While I agree with the last sentence of the SCC Post;there is something to be said about filling the pension deficit "once and for all".

If future pension requirements are met as needed, the extra tax could ,and that's a big could, be used for actual infrastrure improvements that are truly needed in this city. But, yes, get rid of half of the aldermenand [wish it could be more] and do streamline redundant and unnecessary government waste.

Ban no-bid contracts and direct voucher payments!

How can you not do bidding for every city contract to get the best deal when the city and state are both busted.

These tax increases are legalize theft plain and simple. Just because Rahm says it's necessary bingo they are going to take more of our money. Not much different then a gang member sticking a pistol in your face demanding your wallet and cell phone because he says it's necessary.

As long as people put up with it and fall for the "it's for pensions, it's for the children, this will enable a reduction of violence " and other bullshit lines the mode of operation is successful and it will continue to be a primary mode of operation.

Violence, pensions, the children are pillars that the Chicago empire is built on.

There's no real intention of addressing ANY of it. What bullshit would you feed the public to justify more taxes if those issues were solved?

Worked with Charlie Ramsey in the early to mid-90's. A true leader who I as well as the other officers who worked for him would gladly follow into battle. That's because Charlie would be leading. When he didn't get the superintendent's job in Chicago, his comment to a few friends was "Chicago isn't really ready for change yet." Richard M. saw him as a political threat and sent him packing. Too bad. We would have had a much better department than the fiasco our Department's turned into.

Cut 30 aldermen. Reorganize CPD command structure. My thoughts: in the Army, a grouping of 200 to 300 men is a company commanded by a captain. In CPD, 200 to 300 is a district, so a Captain should be in charge of a district/unit with lieutenants in charge of the 3 watches. No executive officers. Commanders can be in charge of the Areas. My plan eliminates most of the commanders and Deputies. Eliminate the rank of Chief. Commanders can take over the Chief spots.

Result: fewer CPD bosses who get paid less to do more. Consolidate. More with less. What the heck, if that philosophy is good for the rank and file lowly blue shirt then it's good for the white shirts too.

Come on, Rahm. Imagine the savings!

If they can eliminate 1,000 patrolmen from the budget with the stroke of a pen, then they can eliminate 100 bosses too.

And about 30 aldermen.

Perfect example: just left Juvy Court and every officer I saw had their case continued. Most of the judges were not there because they were all off at a conference. So instead of blacking out the date, just pay everyone to show up when they know no cases will be heard. But who am I to complain, my slip still got signed.

=============
you may want to rethink the idea of having fewer aldermen. while it has a superficial appeal, in reality, at least in some respects, the more aldermen you have the more diluted the power is.

you change the structure to 25 aldermen and you could end up with 8 or 10 gang members still aldermen, and all but owning the city council.

Tax the Entitlements.
Garnish the Entitlements for revenues owed the City (weed ANOVs, parking fines, Red light tickets,etc.).
Get those deadbeats to pay their share.
It about time the deadbeat starts paying back.

Ask for 800 Million and settle for 600 Million, this is Burke's way of making the taxpayers feel happy for the smaller tax hike. (LOL) Stupid Democratic taxpayers are thinking, what a deal we just got! Thanks Burke, you are our hero! Always looking out for the common man!

Hey once you get em in lock up the rest is out of your hands. Its just about makin money. The states attorney can continue this case or that case as many times as they like, motion hearing? YES! Fight that charge! Look at it this way, you put your life or safety on the line getting a piece of shit to court....now it's the states turn to pay you for that risk

Judges conference???
Overheard at this "conference"

I just must get the yacht in soon...
Anyone need more caviar or champagne?
I just let a bunch of guilty people go last week. Tired of sentencing everyone to supervision...
We should get our old good friend nominated to the bench....
I drove my Bentley here and it is looking like rain....
When exactly are we vested in the judicial pension system?
The coast is a little cool right now. We are headed to Hawaii for a vacation a few weeks before the Christmas cruise.
This free conference is very useful. I have networked and dined with some great fellow bar members.
Those cops in court yesterday were very disrespectful to me. I was considering contempt...
My new clerk can now sign my name perfectly....I just watch her work.
My call lasted until almost 2pm yesterday. I barely made my 3pm club event ....
My black robe needs more alteration. It's not fitting well.
I had to stop the proceedings yesterday because my broker texted me a hot tip. I used the "had to research some case law" excuse...
When is the next conference? I hope it's not while I am out on my planned holidays....

No proposed cuts in the bloated budget..what a friggin joke this city is.
