Read the Order
Someone complaining in the comments:
- Did anyone see the department SPARed about 40 people for not having their traffic safety vest for the marathon? Wow that shit is pimpy. People working their day off too. I know it was in the instructions, but send their ass home. The department used them like a cheap hoe and fucked them again a month later.
The Department didn't "use" anyone. Bank of America paid overtime wages to a few hundred coppers and who knows what to the TMA people for security for the marathon. In order to work it, you had to bid by seniority to make the time-and-one-half. You were also provided with a list of equipment required to bring. If you were unwilling or unable to have the required equipment, why volunteer? Let someone prepared to do the job have the opportunity.
Sending them home wasn't really an option as there was no time to call people on standby - reporting time was zero-dark-thirty, and few if any people are answering their phone at that hour, dressed and with available equipment to work an event where the runners themselves are lined up before 0500. You need the full force there ready to go, especially in the event of a Boston-type situation.
Everyone on the job is supposed to be at least semi-literate. Failing that, the Lieutenants were reading the Marathon Order at Roll Call for at least a week prior to sign-up and a few days prior to deployment. And this isn't the first year they required the Safety Vest either. This is supposed to be a quasi-military organization...there are rules and such. You can still be a dogass earning time-and-one-half based solely on your years for the small price of showing up in the proper uniform with the required equipment.
You don't follow a simple rule, you get SPARred. At least they didn't deprive them of the check - everyone still got paid. You'd rather see McCompStat at roll call with a box full of Traffic Safety Vests renting them for $150 a pop? You think that everyone would show up with a vest then?

Yea!! Tell it like it is.
Quit bitching and just show up with the proper equipment when you volunteer to make $60 an hour.
Bitching has become epidemic on this job and it used to be the old crusty fucks but now it is the 3 year rookies whining that they can't get a day off for a Halloween party!!!
When you signed up for this job you gave up things like having weekends off and working on days!!!
If you are fucking miserable then look in the mirror and decide if this is really the job for you, and if your a 3 year rookie just remember that your have another 25 years of this shit staring you right in the eye!!!!
You tell the truth SCC on this one. Funny, how people come whining to you, "Ooooh the department SPARed me. They suck." You get paid good money to wear a uniform a certain way, so do what you are paid to do and stop whining if you get in trouble for not doing it the way you are paid to do it.
You can always take your h.s. diploma or college degree and go get a job somewhere where you can really work for a living.
I won't wear that vest. I don't care if they wear them in Europe. Europe is a shell of what it once was. We handled details before those vests were issued. SPAR me, I take pride in my uniform, I'm not covering it up with a vomit inducing, headache causing, green vest because other departments do it.
I agree %100, SCC. It's not pimpy, it's simple.
Hallelujah SCC!!!! The cry babies on this job are always crying, "Nobody told ME! I didn't know!" The dept gives you months to complete a 15 minute training video and the children on this job still can't do it. Everyone was sent an email notification on their dept email account. Everyone can log into e-learning to check their enrolled modules. If you would put your damn phone down and pay attention in roll call you would have heard the Lieutenant or Sergeant tell you multiple times. You want to be treated like an adult? Act like one.
Get used to seeing more of this as the CPD brings more CALEA standards/practices into play. The traffic vest is a
US DOT requirement which the CALEA folks will use to accredidate CPD while other IL agencies leave CALEA in the dust (where it belongs). And as SCC points out - the vest is required equipment but CALEA wants the standard enforced. Yet another statistic for ComCrap and R&D to track.
I heard that downtown is going to require them for VRI starting at the beginning of the year.
The 2 on my watch got SPARed, but they had thier vests...just the wrong color (orange, not the green). The order did not specify which colored vest they should bring. However, it's my understanding that everyone who was issued an orange vest was notified some time ago, to turn that one in to get the newer one. Also a guy got SPARED because someone got shot (turns out he shot himself) in one of the VRI boxes, at 1954hrs, and they weren't there yet. The penalty was a day!!
McCarthy has created an army of finger-pointers and sycophants!!
The vest is a federal safety requirement now.
Way to go SCC. Too many whiners on this blog acting like spoiled children. They need to hear this once in a while.
Zogg once ran the marathon backwards, and still qualified.
The orange one is still ok, right?
It still amazes me that coppers beef when they get caught doing something they weren't supposed to do or violating a general order or a uniform requirement. You got caught take your medicine and move on.
Great post. Unfortunately, the way this department has gone is a bunch of do whatever I wanters. Uniform regs nor general orders have to be followed by most (in their eyes)
Every officer I saw during the race seemed incredibly bored. Was it that bad of a gig?
I did see a County Sheriff and a suburban officer run the race in full gear, including a vest underneath. Those were some hard police. Got to give them credit.
AMEN!!!! Bunch of crybabies. They will hopefully get a day. It is not like the rules are a mystery.
Ummmm. I see the point but this idea that everyone should have a shot and seniority is bad cmon.
If you cannot figure a way to make overtime on this job you are not of sound mind.
I laugh when I see Detectives working O.T. gigs it is laughable. But again who really cares Good look to the new sergeants.
I can't wait till the ZOGG show up at the area.
Thank you. Well said.
How about mandatory inspection the day before.
Like showing up for VRI without a pillow or DVD player, there are consequences for not following the rules.
Rules is rules.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
I'm sure these guys and gals don't care, but you look like a goof when you show up and tell the bosses you couldn't read a simple set of directions that could be easily read and followed by a 10 year old.
Well said SCC. It amazes me that some dogs in this department can't follow simple rules and requests.
Speaking of SPARS around 40-50 Shts all received spars for viewing a case report and are taking (1) suspension day. Taking a day for viewing something that is public info.
I believe the order is very clear you may not diseminate information, but you may use it for job related information. Reading a report for descriptions of an offender wanted in a felony I don't believe violates any order. If anyone is doing anything these days for this department they need their head examined
Ah yes, seniority...the CPD's version of the 'Grandfather Clause!"
I am the rabble rouser!!!
Jesus H. Christ. It never ceases to amaze the level of stupidity on this job. When did the "victimization" effect set in where police have been infected by the lows of society? "Oh poor me I can't read and follow simple orders, but that is the departments fault and fuck Rahm!"
Shit I can't say I am a company guy but man following some simple rules that are laid out well in advanced to make TIME AND A HALF would seem easy enough. I guess not.
Oh and why waste the time 07:56? Go ahead and inspect one of these clowns the day before, they still won't bring everything the next morning.
I won't wear that vest. I don't care if they wear them in Europe. Europe is a shell of what it once was. We handled details before those vests were issued. SPAR me, I take pride in my uniform, I'm not covering it up with a vomit inducing, headache causing, green vest because other departments do it.
11/05/2015 12:56:00 AM
Do it because it's federally mandated that anyone working In (or around) traffic must wear them.
Did all the merit sergeants pass inspection at the police academy .
FOP check the merit sergeants swiping patterns for the last two years.
What a joke ?
It's the sergeant and lieutenants fault , they didn't tell me to pay attention at roll call .
Sometimes I just don't get people's attitude. If you are told to do something and you don't do it then sure enough, something might happen. It is a job afterall!! In days gone by, you would not be spared but would have to work your day off, no pay, as punishment. The feds stopped that as a violation of labor law. Some people just don't react to warnings, even multiple warnings.

WOW! sounds tough. I would suggest that you march into the district commander and repeat those words. Everyone should be sure of your position.
Someone's a supervisor......I agree, if you get an order or directions, follow them. Quasi- military? as a veteran I take offense. This department is the polar opposite of the military. I understand PO's were supposed to wear their vests and were properly informed so they shouldn't moan and complain about the spar. I guess those vests were supposed to prevent a bombing like Boston. Big pimpin' if you ask me. Just something for the higher ups to point a finger at if something went wrong. P.S. I didn't work the marathon and wasn't spared. Just not drinking the kool-aid.
Great post. I check this blog on a daily basis on the chance of reading something important and relevant. The complaining about everything that's wrong and the name calling leaves me wondering why bother, Thanks for putting the crybabies in their place.
P. O. C. Mota.
Ahhhh..."by seniority"...therein lies the problem. I would be all for a new system for picking people to get the overtime. Part performance based, part seniority based, part compliance based...a totality based system where people aren't rewarded for just showing up. When I got on 18 years ago I could t wait to be the guy who could bid anywhere, work any watch, grab the OT for no there reason than seniority. Now I realize just foe fundamentally fucked up that system is. Nothing gets done. People should be rewarded for more than mere time in grade. Sure it should be a factor but so should job performance, activity, medical time, suspension days, and other discipline. Performance evaluations by supervisors are part of every successful private sector company or firm. It needs to be given more force in this department. After taking a totality of an officers work factors you come up with a number and rank people city wide. Then use THAT in place of seniority. It's time for a change. This department has gotten way to sedentary to be effective. It's time to effect the change that is sorely needed!
"I won't wear that vest. I don't care if they wear them in Europe. Europe is a shell of what it once was. We handled details before those vests were issued. So what you're saying is, as a cop, the rules don't apply to you.
Anyone see the irony here?
I wear my traffic vest everywhere I go even when I'm off duty this way I won't get spared by the inspector. Girls digg it.
That is correct sir. We are a "Quasi-military" organization. Not "para" not "semi".
Quasi - def, "similar to, but not the same as"
Well said, SCC!!!!
Maxed out and I've never seen more entitled crybabies!!
Guys are crying about what they're gonna do now that they can't wear the winter skull cap.
Do what every officer for the last 50 years did up until a few years ago!!!
Rocky the squirrel hat or earmuffs.
Uniform standards change....Roll with the changes!!!
In 30 years I have no beef with this job.
It's treated me & my family great!!!
Call me a fool, but I STILL love this job!
BE SAFE!
Thanks SCC for as usual truth! To many "new kids on the block" that mommy and daddy told them "no" continue to try to rewrite rules! This is not a bad job don't like it get your $25,000 year job private sector and display your kollege diploma or your phd_Pretty high diploma on the wall!
I got no issue about officers getting spared for not showing up without the right equipment, but how does the city get punished for not issuing functional equipment..... all the radios that were handed out to one of the squads all started chirping about 30 mins into turning them on, most were dead by the start of the marathon.....did they not get charged from last year !!! Oh the Irony !!!
The orange one is still ok, right?
He is fine. FOP doesn't use him anymore.
You laugh at detectives working OT? Look at yourself in the mirror jagnuts and stop being jealous.
I won't wear that vest. I don't care if they wear them in Europe. Europe is a shell of what it once was. We handled details before those vests were issued. ...............................
When you get hit by a car don't come crying to the department to cover your medical bills for not wearing the stupid vest.. Grow the fuck up!
I heard this "Zogg guy" wore his vest and saved a bus of childrens from driving into the lake. I heard it from a cousin of the wife of someone who worked from the district he came from........
Remember the Boston marathon bombing? Every copper had the yellow vest on and it was helpful in that everyone knew where the police were at. But this is Chicago, the department of entitlement and I'm too cool to wear a yellow vest and do what I wanna do... Also the attitude that I'm a worker and I don't need to wear a vest because it will spoil my cool cop look with all the ladies.. Nothing but boners on this job. Don't forget, it's a job.. You still have to follow the rules and policies of your job. Just like in the private sector, if you don't follow your company rules you get written up or fired.. But no, we're cops, we think we are special and can do what we want at work. Glad they were sparred

When did an email become an official notification? There is no G.O. requiring you to check your emails. I'm guessing you're a Sgt or above. Well guess what cupcake, it's your (Sgt) responsibility to ensure (remember that key word "ensure" on the promotional exam) that your P.O.'s are aware and have completed any bullshit training videos.
Tell CALEA to FUCK OFF!
We where the Police before those jagoffs came around with stupid certifications that don't mean shit to the public at large when the public calls 911 for help!
It was well known about the vest. Maybe taking a day off will remind them next year.
I heard ZOGG sleeps in his traffic vest.
SCC, Outstanding, hope the wonder kids get a little in sight on requirement for a money making detail. When us now retired guys were in Tac, we got the details on weekends and everyone were happy campers. We would never think of making our bosses look like shit for some bull shit we pulled off. The element of copper' treating and respecting each other like family vanished.
No one went without basic needs and then some.
All you young copper' thank the good Lord for the job, beefing regarding bull shit you are required to do is real old already. Being a white shirt today has to be a dreadful job, copper' cannot make a simple decision and would jack pot a good sgt in a second. If you think the burbs are great, ask around. They fire your ass for not making a full stop at a stop sign. The burb copper' are a heart attack in the making, no room for error in their department.
The blame the bosses game is real old already. Do your job already ~~~~
all without a phone call that is.
Here is an idea. DON'T SIGN UP!! I was at home making heart shaped pancakes with the kids then laid around the couch watching cartoons. Someone else said this... Give them nothing, but take from them everything!

@1256
When you're not so busy taking pride in your uniform, take the time to get your eyes examined. That "vomit inducing, headache causing, green vest" that you refuse to wear is actually yellow.
The question I have is what was paid for the "rental" of a vest you can buy for $25. A boss with common sense would have had a bag of them in their trunk, it's called being prepared for the unexpected.
Ok, serious question, who would win in a race Usain Bolt, Coach Ditka, or Zogg??
Zogg once ran the marathon backwards, and still qualified.
Thats because Seiser trained him..

You are correct! There is no General Order requiring you to check your emails. It's a Special Order that requires you to check your emails at the beginning of ervery tour of duty. That's why EVERY sworn member f the department now has an email account. As Rock Hudson used to say... roll over and take it like a man!

I didn't march into his office, but I told him my position. And I'm not trying to "look cool", the vest does not command respect. I'm a company man, but I'm not a "yes man". There is a big difference.

Lmao! There are dinosaurs on this job that don't even know they have an email account. I just recently SPAR'd a supervisor. It's his/her responsibility. I'd rather have my P.O.s on the street after roll call. Moreover, be a good leader and don't screw over your guys.
I take spars with a smile. My fault....
my punishment.....oh well....
Funniest shit ever.....they Spar for not having a vest....who can I soar for giving me a dead radio battery at 530am?
