Deadline Moved Again

  • The deadline to apply for the Chicago Police Department is right around the corner, yet the very people the police are trying to attract are not exactly lining up for the jobs.

    The push for new recruits, especially black and Hispanic, comes on the heels of controversial police shootings, the department’s promise to increase diversity and a need to replace retiring officers. Yet many of the nearly hundred chairs were empty.
This is at least the second "extension." In November, the deadline was extended a month to January 16. Now it's an additional 14 days. Rahm should just think about reverting to the old days when you showed up at the aldercreatures' ward office with an envelope, and they gave you a badge and a starting date later that month.

Riddle me this Batman. According the the 2010 Census Bureau the city's racial breakdown is as follows:

White 31.7% ( By white they are including, Indian, Arabian and Asian)
Black 32.9%
Hispanic 28.9%

The breakdown of the CPD by race according to several websites. (Wiki, Mother Jones, NY Times etc.) My numbers are the approximate stats as each site has slightly different numbers.

White 48% (remember, white includes Indian, Asian and Arabian)
Black 32%
Hispanic 20%

Why is there such a HUGE push to get more blacks on the CPD if they are perfectly represented by the racial breakdown of their % of the city's population?

Of course the newspaper writes, "CPD attempting to get more minority applicants." The only thing I see on the news are black female P.O's, giving talks in black neighborhoods, to ONLY black people.

Isn't this discrimination?

All coppers know there are way more Hispanics in the city than the accounted for number. Why isn't there a push to hire more of them? They are the ones underrepresented according to the statistics. What Hispanic communities is this push being conducted in?

The hypocrisy doesn't end there. The city is giving 5 bonus points to your test score if you graduated from a CPS High School. 5 points is a HUGE advantage on a test to 100 points.
The city knows that 92% of CPS graduates are minorities.

This is blatant discrimination.

This is unfair to people who went to catholic schools, suburban applicants, foreigners, GED recipients and out of state applicants. This is not even a veiled attempt to hide discrimination.

Lets not forget certain clergymen and elected officials who state the next Superintendent HAS to be black. Why? It's because they are completely racist.

This city has a long way to go before all races are treated equally. The problem is, is that the news media are targeting the wrong offenders.

Pandering to an audience (who the majority) won't even be able to pass the standard. So then what? Lower the standard of course and take out some requirements. Let's see how low rhamen noodle will sink. After all, you are trained to justifiably shoot someone if need be, by the power vested by the state. The people who willingly decide to become the Chicago police in this climate aren't exactly the ones you'd want showing up when you call the police. Lower the standards, lower the age, lower everything, and you get lower quality applicants. No surprises there. At least not to anyone with common sense. If you make it easier for lower quality applicants to take the job at a time when you're looking to increase professionalism, community relations, and hold officers to an even higher standard, you're just shooting yourself in the foot. You want the best and brightest, so you cater to the least qualified. Good plan. Let's see how that plays out. This used to be a great job, then a good job, then an ok job. Now, it's the best way to go to prison for doing your job the right way. If you have any sense, don't take this job now.

Remember 70% will not pass the drug test and background checks unless they turn a blind eye to the standards! So how many does that leave left to be hired! Then how about the 70% of those who are left who may be fine citizens and drug free but cannot pass the test unless the standards are lowered. Total mess that Rahm and Daley got us into.

I worked with and learned from a lot of great coppers who had no sheepskin. Most of them were smarter and more down to earth than almost all of my professors.

Both my ex wife and I are the police and we both talked her kids out taking the exam. I'm the ex step dad and she has good kids. We married when they were 4 and 6 and they are now 18 and 20. We both told them not to bother. I think the generational police families will be dwindling.

Yeah, prospective applicants probably don't want to have to live in this shit hole. I personally know several well-qualified applicants who were ex-military, squared-away guys who would've been good on this job, but they passed in favor of other jobs because of residency.

And are a lot happier and worry less because of it.

It's funny. I tried to find the online application by googling (chicago police department online application).

The first four links which appear are from Chicago itself, and it's not clear how to even access the application. They are dead-ends.

You have to get routed through ABC7 (fifth link down) who gives the proper destination.

Who in their right mind would want to take a job where you are more likely going to be indicted for your actions then make it to promotion or just retirement.

Just look at the Administration that is being promoted to command this department?
I have been here for 29 years. Passed each promotional test and still work in the hood pushing a car from job to job. I am disgusted with the way the department and system works here. And all the young guns coming on the job think this will change.

Just the other day one of the hard chargers had enough and just walked out of roll call. Why because the Supervisor was acting like he knew what he was doing. Like walking out will change anything.

If you sign up for this job you accept that you may be a cop for 29 years and no matter how well you test you will remain a BEAT COP.

who wants to work for a department that remains on the edge of being taken over by the USDOJ, after having been there for several decades. that perhaps shows a department either unwilling or unable to change. if it cannot change itself, external forces will effect the changing for it, and that will be very unpleasant.

on top of that the city's near bankrupt financial condition does not encourage anyone to jump onboard.

Have any of the "protesters" here ever noticed that policing on the African continent seems to involve 2 1/2-ton open trucks fitted with benches, on which jolt along a dust-covered squad of guys wearing WWII steel helmets and holding old Mauser bolt-actions? Not only that, they are almost invariably members of a tribe that does not like your tribe. Ordinary people see that dust cloud coming up the road, they run like hell.

Well they better do something. The Dept is already short at least 3000 and with the 30 june 17 deadline for the free medical for P.O s 55 and over, the city is going to lose another 2500.And with the big class of mar 90 maxing out the following year this dept will be down 6000 experienced officers.At a time when every dept in the country is having trouble getting anyone to apply for this thankless job.Good luck liberal f@(ks.U got the dept/country u asked for.Everyone better get concealed/carry.Ur going to have no one around to bail u out.

They couldn't get applicants with a tax free sign on bonus of $50,000.00. 25 years ago there were at least 5000 people who signed up for the test. I think they are struggling to get 5 idiots who might take this job. At this rate they will raise the retirement age to 80 and pay you double not to retire.

So I'm in the process right now from the 2013 test. I passed the Power Test no problem. There were two guys there with me that I know from where I currently work at. Both failed the Power Test as they are grossly overweight. Well. They just told me the other day they got notified to come back and take the Power Test again over again.

Here's the thing. I know other people who failed the Power test and they never were given another chance to take it again. Can any of you guess why the first two are getting another chance?

In other words; Pilgrims aren't getting second chances but the "constituents" are.

Almost all police agencies, including the Feds won't exclude you for having smoked Marijuana as long as you admit to it on the background checks and polygraph. The reason being is that almost all of the millennial generation has at least tried pot. If you come back "hot" on the drug test that is a different matter. One thing that Chicago does is ask for the names of all former spouses, significant others, boyfriends, girlfriends etc, and interviews them to look for domestic abuse. As far as I know other departments don't do that.

CPD needs to go back to requiring only a high school diploma or a GED.
That should fix the problem!!!!

At this rate they will only require an 8th grade diploma or you can recite your abc's and count to 100.

Born and raised on 26th and Avers, but moved to Schaumburg for the obvious reasons and now that I want to join, the residency requirement stops me.
I wonder if I list my grandmothers address how deep the check will be on my residency...

It doesn't matter where you live now but you will have to live within the city limits once you're hired. I'm not sure if an investigator still comes to your house before getting hired.

Shouldn't the white middle class male applicant be calling this REVERSE DISCRIMINATION. I seem to remember when they hired WHITE males in larger numbers than BLACK males the BLACK males were allowed to drop that proverbial RACE CARD and even though a WHITE MALE was more or better qualified he was "discriminated" against as they took the BLACK applicant based on the color of their skin. THAT was considered ok and "legal" by those in power who stated it was for "racial norming." Now they have an abundant population of these "Race Norming" individuals, whose ONLY QUALIFICATION was skin color, on the job and they're not happy with them. They have all these "College Boys'n Gals" that have replaced the HS Graduate "Street Smart" kids and they don't like them either! Be careful what you wish for, you may actually get it!
