Nice Chase

No one hurt, bad guys in custody, the kind of thing that almost never gets publicity - unless there's a new helicopter around:
  • Eyewitness News has exclusive video of a police chase on Chicago's West Side.

Chopper 7 HD was hovering overhead Tuesday afternoon as a suspect sped through city streets, then made a run for it.

Police said it started with an armed robbery on West 23rd St. Officers spotted the suspects' vehicle and started chasing them. Chopper7HD caught up with the pursuit near Roosevelt and Homan.

After dodging vehicles on the street, the suspects turned, then ditched their car in a parking lot on Grenshaw.
Good footage from the chopper. Isn't it amusing that the news stations can have helicopters up most days, but hoping for PH-1 is like wishing for a pony?

Hey , the helicopter unit is a spot . I know 2 guys , sworn , who were chopper pilots with hours and one was ex military , but they sent a clouted guy to flight school on the city's dime instead .
You can't expect clouted people in spots to work inconvenient hours .

Good job to those involved.
That being said, saw the video and I'm positive the chase (no chase?) policy was violated more than once. Good thing for those involved it turned out well otherwise it would be your asses!

Competently managed mid size cities seem to have a veritable air force. Why can't Chicago?
You would think that all your clouted princesses would love to work in an aviation detachment?
A glamorous job, you never have to get your hands dirty, what's not to like?

In LA police chases are almost a daily event. And they have a subscriber SMS base of people who get alerted and what channel to tune to watch the overhead News choppers covering it. The FAA has even come up with regulations on how the News and Police choppers fly. During such chases the radio station KFI Radio 640 while covering such chases asks the person in the car to blink their light if they are listening and more then once they have. To be sure when the chase is for a very serious thing it is treated that way. but so many of these clowns are in it for temporary fame, and most importantly 3 hots, and a Cot in jail.

It funny I live in Cheyenne, Wyoming where car chases are as rare as a libtard but I listen to KFI 640 out of Los Angles. I guess it is a way of appreciating where I live.

Great chase but surely looks like a proactive work. In these politically motivated times we are not allowed to be proactive. Just look at what they did to Cleveland brothers in blue for chasing car back in 2012. 13 officers suspended for period of 21-30 days for taking part in chase. Since chase ended with justified shooting of 2 occupants the shooting officer was charged with homicide and agg. assault. (now why would state also charge him with agg.assault is beyond my comprehension, unless they are witch hunting to make something stick). Now judge ruled the shooting reasonable and justified thus cleared the shooting officer on both charges. Of course that ruling made certain protesters unhappy, so the Cleveland safety director decided to fire 6 officers(including shooting officer) out of those 13 that have served suspension........some food for thought. Proactive work in this political climate will get you fired and possibly incarcerated even when you're 100% within the law.

And the ABC chopper was secretly hoping to themselves that the pursued car would strike an innocent, the police would strike an innocent, the police would end up in a shooting, the police would use force to affect the arrest, anything that would put the police in a bad light.

Just remember, just because a sgt hasn't terminated a pursuit doesn't mean it's on him. Most guys wouldn't pursue anyone, I'd give it two blocks maximum, especially now.

A real police helicopter unit is for aggressive policing. You might as well ask the department to get more armored vehicles, drones or real training for our officers. It's all a pipedream of a bygone era of law enforcement. Protect yourselves and each other and please remember to see the youths on the corners as artists and musicians.

I worked in the information services unit years back and the Sgt. That was in charge of the command vans called and asked if we could get the command van hooked up so that the news choppers could send thier camera links down to them. I was ashamed to tell him that his command van system was so poor in quality that the news media would overpower the command vans .He really tried to make it happen but was forced into mandatory rrtirement. We still don't have good stuff on our command vans. Thanks to Jonathan and Marv

Just plain stupid to partake in a vehicle pursuit nowadays. Criminals crash and die, or worse kill a pedestrian or non involved motorist and say good bye to your freedom, pension, livelihood, home, and with time your wife or husband who will divorce you due to the stress you needlessly brought upon the family.

CPD helicopters should be moved to one of the two new heliports that are near to the center of the city, or set up our own heliport in a more central location. This way, they would have a much quicker response time. In addition, there are not enough pilots assigned to the unit to keep the 2 helicopters flying.

Everytime you get in a car chase you are choosing a shithead criminal over your own family. Think about it. Dont chase for any reason

I was under the impression that the pilots in the helicopter unit paid for their own training. A city of this size should have a much bigger helicopter unit that is in the air 24/7. Helicopters and airborne units can be a tremendous asset when used properly. One problem is that they are very expensive. Also the County foots half the bill for the unit, which might be one reason why it seems to be hardly ever air borne. Any one in the unit care to comment.

Sounds like a guy who has never chased and certainly never will. "Armed Robbery Offender"? Take a ticket. And if the chasee hits someone and kills them then kiss your retirement good by.

The last two chases Ive seen were 1, covert chasing a theft offender they didnt want to let go. Luckily he didnt kill anyone when he cracked up. Funny, funny watching all the coverts chasing while the Bosses in three districts were screaming for their BT. cars to NOT! get involved. Funny, funny, funny.

Last one was over a warrant where the cops also shot up the street. Nobody was hit, nobody cracked up. Put your name back into the Lottery again. Keep chasing fellas, a "really" nice pinch. If your lucky the victims may even show up to a court date.

Sorry but the game is rigged and you hold no cards.

An amazing video. The issue is it is Amazingly clear and focused. Think twice , but protect yourselves. We all get caught up in pursuits, but I have also been involved in Federal litigation due to vehicl pursuits that have caused death or serious injury. This video shows the clarity that the news cameras have , one stupid move after the arrest and take down and you are down. React but also take the time to think.
Signed a supervisor who will have your back and be out there, and I still chase the bad guys.

Unfortunately, the two commenters that posted at 11:41:00 AM and 12:49:00 PM are EXACTLY right. You are absolutely risking your ass when you get in a vehicle pursuit. If the offenders or the coppers had crashed into an innocent and killed them, they could kiss their lives goodbye. Think about it. Is it worth it? Absolutely not. Can you imagine if you were chasing a car and that car smashed into an innocent's vehicle at an intersection and killed a mother and her children? Babies? What's more important? Catching some criminal that will most likely get let off by the judges anyway or those peoples' lives? Or your life? Your family? It's a really easy decision if you just think about it.

yes, the pilots paid for their own training. yes, we should have a bigger unit 24/7. absolutely, helicopters are a key asset to the ground units. expense is relative to the term, its just like anything else. no, county foots 25% of the bill and time. we fly as much as possible.

Thanks for the clarification. It just proves that the previous poster that said he knew someone that was trained on "the City's dime" is a liar. Helicopters perform a valuable and important function even if some on this department don't think so. It is a shame that Cities less than half of the size of Chicago hive helicopter units that fly 24/7 and we don't. Do the Fire Department pilots pay for their own traiming or not?

I wrote the damn dogs comment. I have over 25 years on the job and have worked in the ghetto most of the time. I have been in many vehicle pursuits and have fired my S&W revolver & M&P with multiple hits, killing once. I would do it again, without fear, if I have to. Am I proud of it? No, it's just a fact. I have never been afraid to do my job and I never will. Why? Because I am doing it the right way. I treat others honestly, fairly, and without malice. They try to kill me or another I will shoot them. They flee in a vehicle after committing a forcible felony with violence I will pursue them, for as long as I can in accordance with policy. Know the law, know dept policies/procedures, follow them and you will have no problems. Stop spitting out nonsense and poison because you can't, won't, or are scared to do your job. Re: Chases. About 20 years ago I heard an Oaklahoma patrolman talk about his experience rolling up on a nasty accident which resulted from an OK trooper chasing an offender. The suspect had t-boned a compact car and killed both occupants. The occupants were the rural officer's wife and daughter and this lawman's sole mission was to try to change our attitude regarding chases. After retiring from the Choctaw, OK PD, Chuck Whetsel was then elected the County Sheriff and he still is leading the campaign to chase only when absolutely necessary. Footnote : The trooper subsequently suffered from PTSD and left the job.

Is this pursuit absolutely necessary? Will this offender outrun Motorola? Can we get the bastard later & more safely? Let Chuck Goudie & company find their next I-Team victim somewhere else. You don't want to be shown on tv more times than Laquan. Go home safely.

You know, I'm usually the last one to bash a cop for their actions, but you, my fellow Officer are a fucking idiot to post shit like this!

How about waking the fuck up and reading the local paper or watching the news. Trust me, I know that Simpsons re-runs are better and more educational, but take a look at current events.

So the Offenders crash and kill themselves. No loss to society. BUT the poor cop that was "doing his job" gets crucified.

The Offenders crash into someone else and injure or kill some innocent passer by. The poor cop just "doing his job" gets crucified.

I don't care about the "Balancing Test" as per our General Orders. Something happens; YOU ARE FUCKED. PERIOD. The Mayor, the Department, IRPA, the reverunds, alderscum, and the Citizens are going to want your ass on a platter. And they will get it.

ANYTHING you do on this Department, you need a "Balancing Test". Balance the facts of actually doing our job with the: "Is it's worth your:
Job
Freedom
Pension
Savings
Home
Wife's Savings
Kid's College fund
Side Jobs
VRI

Because this City, Mayor, and Department will fuck you in the ass, and use broken glass for lubricant.

Wake the fuck up, please!

It's rather obvious that you've never been called down to 219 South, or to the Corp Council and had to disclose your assets. Because if you've been there, you wouldn't post shit like you have.

The pursuit was a good one? No kid, the pursuit was a LUCKY ONE!
