Shooting Break!

We hadn't noticed the lull. Did anyone else miss it?
  • Sixteen people were shot in an 11-hour period Monday, including two along a Safe Passage route in the West Englewood neighborhood, according to authorities.

The shootings - from Cragin on the Northwest Side to Roseland on the Far South Side - left five dead. Those shot ranged in age from 16 to 56. Several survivors were left in critical condition.

The burst of shootings came after no one was reported shot in the city through most of the day Sunday into early Monday.
You think we would have noticed 33 hours without a shooting victim, but the misses are just as loud and we were responding to shots fired calls everywhere the last two days.

The Mayors leadership has failed us!!! Crime is out of control with the policies and leadership of this cities leadership. I love this once great city, however we must face the truth. Crime is out of control. When someone is killed they have become the ultimate victim! If we can not feel safe than what are we paying taxes for?? I plan on moving away where like minded people are and to a safe community. The current Chicago, Cook County climate have caused all this crime and violence. People need to wake up and vote for new leadership or move out!!!

Good Luck to all the people who are tapped in this hell!!

I've seen estimates that it costs half a million bucks to treat a shooting victim.
I haven't seen how much it costs to treat the dead. Just the 191 shot survivors in January is going to cost 95 million dollars. Who's paying this? City, State Feds? You should keep a running tally of the dollar amount with your shooting posts. According to these figures the dollar cost last year was 1.4 billion. How much are those deficits again?

They are not police and how can you let them tell the police how they should do their jobs? You don't tell the doctor what to do when you visit a doctor for any medical reason. This is the number one reason that morale is so low in the department which contributes to the sharp increase of violence within the city.

Im curious as to how the new paperwork and/or law affects this situation. Im not an officer, so I have no idea, but with your new rules, do you actually have to witness something going on in order to approach anyone? If you are called for gunshots, and drive by and see nothing, is that pretty much all you can/have to do? If you start speaking with anyone in that area, whether they shot a gun or not (which of course, you didnt see) do you now have to fill out that new paperwork that could take you up to 45 min per person? Can that person file a complaint against you for "hassling" them (just speaking to them about the gun shots)?

this system seems so absurd that I would love to see some explanations from your perspectives. Thanks!

Just because you like your VRI, doesn't make it a "fact". Let's go with "conventional wisdom". It is closer to reality. Conventional wisdom would say that almost every one of those shootings were gang related, Those gang shooting probably would happen regardless of how much manpower you put on the street. You see, as any real policeman would know, that when they are out looking to shoot they just wait for a chance, and you will never have a copper on every corner.

Extra manpower effects things like robbery and quality of life issues in a neighborhood, things a real taxpayer worries about. That overtime money would be better spent on hiring new officers who would then have a stake in the neighborhood, their beat. Not the same for some guy put on a corner on his day off. You know how much real work your get out of that guy, you are that guy, almost none. It's your day off. Hiring will also help our pension.

If you want to argue the point, talk to the guys running the Department now. A hiring frenzy is about to happen with a whole lot of promotions along with them. The McCarthy Experiment, directed by Mayor Emmanuel, has proven to be a huge mistake, a failure even, and everybody knows it now. Most of us knew it already. It has left this City with a Department of Justice investigation and a huge moral problem, both of which will cost us taxpayers a whole lot of money.

This is Mayor Emmanuel's mistake. McCarthy was just his dancing monkey.

Welcome to the world of the new ISR. If he is out there just standing and we have no reasonable articulable suspicion the unit is going to just drive on by. A call to 911 isnt good enough to justify a stop. Sucks but thats the new world and no officer is going to subject themselves to a lawsuit over some anonymous call placed to 911.

I hate to break it to you good citizen, but this is what the police response will be from here on out. You see, the police are doing that is called the bare minimum.
The 911 call is made, and the officers are required to "safely proceeding to the call" as per our General Orders (rules). Any actions outside of that rule is a violation. So, if the police instead go 100 mph. to the call with lights/siren and get in an accident, well, they will be disciplined for "not safely proceeding to the call". Then the officers will be stripped and sued. Therefore, all the police are REQUIRED to do is respond safely, which it sounds as if they did.

Now, as far as driving by and leaving. This is where citizens need to understand the US Constitution protects the good people, and as well as the criminal.
If, when the police respond, all persons in the yard/alley are no longer there and it's quiet, there is NOTHING the police can do about it. They cannot kick the door in on the house, they cannot kick the door in on the garage. What they CAN do is knock on the door of the offending house. No one will answer the door, and the officers must then leave. If they DO kick in the door, we will probably see those officers brought up on Federal charges.

Welcome to policing in 2016.

Yes, you can throw the Mayor out, can't say he doesn't deserve it,
But after him how about that idiot Prepwincle who stated, "too many people of color in cook county jail". Just what in the he'll does that mean ? If you are in cook county jail you are there because you have been accused of a crime. I suppose according to her twisted logic she would want the membership of the jail to reflect the exact percentage of people of color in Cook County Jail to reflect their proportion in the general population. Well Toni sorry but "people of color" commit crimes in a much greater proportion than their white or oriental counterparts. Fact of life Toni. Open your anything but colorblind eyes Toni. She should be tossed out for just making as stupid a statement as that alone.
Perhaps it's not the Police who are the Problem but Stupid Politicians who are the Problem. When are Black politicians going to be held responsible for their criminal constituency, the Police are all held responsible for the possible bad decisions of one member in a split second, doesn't seem too far a stretch to hold the politicians of this criminal element responsible. Let's try it and see how that plays out for a while.

Now go look in the mirror and berate yourself for all the times you collected money for an event or Christmas Gift, only to pocket it to support your bad habit.

I have not forgotten how you collected $10 from the watch in 1999 for a gift the LT's never received.

Bubble-Head is just an evil, unloved, mis-mothered fuck
who should have been put in prison years ago...

His will not be a happy end.
He's fucked with and fucked over way too many people
for no other reason than because he thinks he can.

He must owe some really bad people lots of money...

Carbine Operators OT would be awesome. Only problem is the alderman don't like the Carbine. It's not the image they want for their communities. The spineless supervisors fold quicker than superman on laundry day to their wants and demands. The Carbine is just like the police. Everyone hates it till they need it.

Weapon of choice- especially in places like Englewood, should be the old BAR. Heavy gun, but slings a lot of lead.

That's the police "image" that should be displayed in the War Zones.

Hey, the 8th dist. is in denial about shots fired. At 6054 S Kolmar beat 813 there have been numerous reports of shots being fired in the alley behind this address and in the yard. Located at this address is a gang-banger released from prison, and guess what for, shooting someone. No one investigates, they just drive by and leave. The people in the area are in fear and no one is investigating.

Hey Why don't you just investigate it yourself? do your duty as a concerned citizen. Canvass the area, maybe look for suspicious persons, interview neighbors, do some surveillance you know the stuff that people are accusing the police of being " racially profiling" and harassing "citizens" these days. But since you're a civilian and not a cop there wont be any trouble or heat on you.... Oh but yeah I forgot ... You might run into some very dangerous and violent gangbanger thugs ( the type of folks cops deal with every day )who wouldn't even twitch at the thought of doing something bad to you. There's that .. What crazy times we live in !

OT: That anarchist Steinberg did an article in the Sun Times today about the CPD. Where he stated Superintendent Richard Brzeczek quit rather than serve under a black man, Brzeczek was forced out due to his public statements and political ads that he would vote for Mayor Jane Byrne. The media at that time was pushing for Brzeczek to quit for what they thought was unethical conduct for doing a political ad for the Mayor.

Someone missed the mark on this by about a mile.
The Breeze had much bigger problems than a political ad.
Three people from IAD were assigned full-time to his case.

I have heard much talk in the hallways and behind closed doors of New Super 012, home of the awkward forced marriage of old 012 and 013.

Is there a conflict brewing between management and blue shirts over activity? In this day when police are under constant attack and scrutiny, when white shirt and blue shirt should close ranks, not attack each other over mere numbers on some spreadsheet that no one of importance cares about?

If the blue shirts stand together, they have the winning hand. But there is a good chance that some will fall in line from threats like "you'll be split up from your partner", "you're off your car", "you're off the team go work the watch", "you're going to midnights" or what they really fear on 3rd watch in particular, "you're working a late car!"

However, there are a lot of old coppers in 012. More guys with 20 years on than not. Probably not easily bullied or bamboozled. And definitely not kool-aid drinkers.

Meanwhile, the usual coppers in good spots and the supervisors hear no such threats, they go about their la-dee-da half-days at work talking about how lazy and dumb the coppers on the watch are, oblivious to what cops working the streets have to put up with not only from civilians but from their own.

As for the commander, to the majority of the officers there he's no better or worse than any other commander in any other district. He probably just wants to get to his retirement like the rest. Thing is, so do the blue shirts. Only the blue shirts have the opinion that they won't make it to retirement if they start being recklessly proactive for no good reason other than numbers. And there's the problem.

Of course, this is all just what I've seen and heard. I have no opinion in this matter. I'll let you all know what happens, if it's anything good. I hear all, see all but am not seen...

Yeah what crazy times w live in when the dog asses of the department finally take over. There is a big difference between doing your job and doing things that get you in trouble. I'm guessing you haven't done your job since getting hired. The people that were workers before are still working now. They just adapt and change with the times. The dog asses like you however continue to make excuses as to why they can't work.
