Judge is "Disappointed"

Seriously? You sit on the bench and you're "disappointed"?
  • Cook County Circuit Judge William Raines was in California last week when he heard the news: The 64-year-old woman he'd hoped to never see in his courtroom again was arrested once more at O'Hare International Airport.

Marilyn Hartman has earned national notoriety as a stowaway for trying to sneak onto jets without a ticket.

"I can't tell you how disappointed I am right now that we're facing this issue," Raines told Hartman on Tuesday in a Chicago courtroom.
Here's what really got our blood boiling - again:
  • "We've sat down and we put a lot of time and resources into trying to make this work," Raines said. "And if it's not going to work, then guess what we need to do? There's a punishment factor that comes in. I don't want to even address that until we have more information, but this is really kind of the last opportunity, I think.

"And I said that the last time, that this was the last opportunity. So maybe this is the last last opportunity," the judge said.
What the fuck does "...last last opportunity" even mean? It's just another bullshit lib-tarded means to excuse deliberate and repeated misbehavior on the part of not just this nutjob, but thousands of criminals across the system.

This is why Dart is emptying the jail at every opportunity, giving repeat felons "last last" opportunities.

This is what Quinn was doing, releasing somewhere around one thousand convicted felons on parole that ended up committing numerous assaults, batteries, rapes and at least two murders we know of.

And this is exactly why we vote "NO" on every single judge up for retention in this crooked political system we have here today.

A woman sneaking into airports disappoints a judge more than violent offenders? Only in Crook County!

Nothing new here, in fact it's common practice to let criminals out back on the streets and let folks defend themselves without holding offenders accountable. Go and check the last 5 yrs of how many violent crimes offenders are regulars at motel cook county, it's a dam joke...Shoot go and look up the last 5 yrs at Juvenile court on the same issues what a joke as well, it's almost as if the judges and politicos have passed the message not to prosecute violent offenders. Maybe if some real investigating is done by some real journalist, it will she'd light on the ridiculous amounts crimes chicago and cook county have that officers have to overwhelmingly deal with!

Dear Judge Raines,

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results.

Insanity is also Marylin's problem. She needs to be locked up.

So do most of the criminals you convict.

Judge Raines has been pretty standup with me, but that is pretty goofy to keep letting this mental case run rampant. I'll tell you this; my old man never said "last last time" and he never even said "last time" it was always a nice fresh slap waiting for me.

Let the free-for-all continue.

She's clearly insane. When there's 100 murdered in 7 weeks I hardly feel
Like a serial stowaway is the problem with this city! The judge needs to send her to the psych ward and move on!

I'm not sure about this specific interview.. but this Judge is generally on the mark. He is pro cop. He is a former police officer who was shot on duty. His brother is a retired CPD Captain. This is one Judge that should definitely be retained.

Whatever. The judge is brothers with a retired CPD captain. The family ties are too much for an average person to stomach.

Solution..... 1 family member on the public dime payroll.

Yeah, that's gonna cause Dean Sr and Jr to steam.

SCC, I write to defend Judge Raines' actions, if not his word choices ("last last opportunity" is, as you suggest, a particularly inelegant phrase).

You recognize the problem when you characterize Ms. Hartman as a "nutjob." She's crazy. Prison isn't going to help her -- it may help your brothers and sisters at the airport who won't have to see her there while she's inside -- but she'll get out -- and she'll come right back.

The problem is that we no longer have a realistic way of committing individuals to mental hospitals who are in need of residential treatment. We closed most mental health hospitals a generation ago because they were joyless places where bad things sometimes happened to inmates. Some took their lithium and functioned, more or less, but do you always remember to take your vitamins or blood pressure medicine? Even when your spouse tells you? A lot of the ex-residents had no support systems like that, so they didn't take their lithium and went to live on Lower Wacker Drive and under viaducts. This was better?

The current mayor has closed non-residential mental health facilities, leaving prison or continued disruptive behavior on the streets as the only options for too many crazy people. Not that crazy people consciously choosing between these....

I know what a big fan you are of Sheriff Dart, SCC (sarcasm off now), but he's right to object to Cook County Jail being used as an insane asylum.

So why is Judge Raines the bad guy here? He's got three options, and all of them suck: Put Ms. Hartman away for a short time, which will only delay her next stowaway attempt; turn her loose -- again -- and admonish her -- again -- to stay away from big, shiny airplanes; or persuade a crazy person to voluntarily seek treatment she desperately needs. The media didn't report that Judge Raines tried option 3 this time, or ever, because it might point out the real problem -- and maybe he didn't try because reasoning with crazy people is generally unsatisfying.

And from your dissatisfaction with the bad choice, from among bad choices, that Judge Raines did make, you leap to the conclusion that Raines must be a bad judge who should be turned out of office at the first opportunity and, moreover, all judges are bad and all should be banished from the bench?

Yeah, I know. You've always urged a "no" vote on all judges at retention time. You're consistent. But you're off base here. Sorry.

P.S. -- Raines is a former policeman (Oakland, California - from 1983 to 1989).

The entire "justice" system is set up to reward, rather than punish bad behavior. When protesters can block traffic, batter police and civilians, and do the kinds of things seen on TV in the loop and elsewhere without getting their asses kicked and charges filed, they get worse, not better. Bad behavior has to be confronted from the outset and nothing is gained by drawing red lines that bad people begin to recognize as unenforceable.

Is this the same Raines who has a nephew on the job and brother retired? We are the ones disappointed in Raines. He is on disability from a P.D. In Califormia too, but gets big dollars for giving "last, last" warnings.

O'Hare cases go to the branch court at Grand and Central. No last, last, last chances if Judge Chevere was still there in Branch 23. She just did't play those games. She was tough as nails. But the downtown bosses don't like tough judges like that. So she got transferred. And the soft-as-puppy-poop judges are out there in the branch courts in full-force. God help us all.

Perfect example of how the liberal mind works. They do not exist in reality, but a fantasy world of utopian principles. Facts do not matter, nor common sense. Logic does not exist for them. You would ordinarily have people like this institutionalized, but here we elect them to office.

so....Dart and Cook County release hundreds (if not thousands) of inmates on electronic monitoring, and then say that they have no idea where many of them are; and, the USA (under the Obama administration) admits that there are thousands of foreigners here in the US who have overstayed their visas, and they have no idea where they are...both "leaders" are Democratic/liberals.....notice a pattern?

SCC, we are usually in agreement, but to vote no on ALL judges up for retention? There are quite a few good ones. I would love to see statistics on what judges are most often targets of a defense SOJ (substitution of judge) request. They would rank high on my "yes" list. Personally, I would prefer reasons given to vote "no" on the retention of a particular judge.

A One way ticket to Istanbul would be nice.
One thing for sure is that she doesn't piss all over the baggage area like the rest of the frequent resident homeless that are allowed hang out at the airport. $8 billion (and growing) is the money spent on Ohare Expansion and they can't figure out what to do with a looney. I bet she was lounging for weeks before she was pinched, means there was clearing out the homeless before the Commissioner's Press Event.
What harm can come from an airport nut?
Oh wait, there was Daley.
