Nice Job Officers

  • Chicago police officers spoke exclusively to ABC7 about how they saved the life of a fellow officer. The life-saving heroics were made possible by a state law that now requires all police stations to be equipped with defibrillators.

A defibrillator is the simple device responsible for saving countless lives, including the life of a 59-year-old officer at the 11th District police station. When the officer went into cardiac arrest Saturday, it undoubtedly helped save his life, along with the fellow officers who jumped into action.
Someone commented that the combined time on the job for these three heroic officers is something under five years. In that case, we feel confident there will always be men and women stepping up when needed.

A job very well done.

Fine example of young modest officers going above to save a brother. I am not surprised at all in the actions of these officers. They don't ask for glorification because they come to work everyday and do what is asked. Thank you

Now Retired...

When the heck did we get those?

Do all District Stations have them?

Great job Officers

P.S. to that..

Sometimes after an incident like this the Department will play the Roll Call video HANDS FREE C.P.R..

Unless they updated the version I saw years ago they left out two important things.

First, check the mouth and throat to see that nothing is obstructing the airway.

Second, position the head back and chin up to free the airway

Then proceed and good luck

Detective Dennis McLaughlin died 2 years ago because the city was to CHEAP to have difibulators then. HE IS the reason we have them now.

There is going to be a dedication for Dennis this Tuesday, 22 February at Area North.

Yes, of course this is a nice job and they deserve a lifesaving award. Unfortunately, these are the only type of police actions that society wants to acknowledge as "heroic" police action. However, we often have to inflict violence swiftly and without warning, in order to save lives. That is why we are trained and equipped to do so with our hands, an assortment of tools, handcuffs and firearms. The violence rarely unfolds in a pretty way or looks like a training video. Most of society doesnt understand and this is a very dangerous time and place for police and society.

I hope the stricken PO recovers fully and has a long healthy retirement, Congratulations to the officers who saved his life. They deserve the life saving award.

I had the CPR class in the academy. Never had another class given by the city for the next 29 years until I retired although I took a few recertification classes on my own.

They did a phenomenal job! According to the CFD and the ER Doctor our officer would have never made it if it wasn't for their efforts. It was inspiring to witness, not only their efforts but the entire district. Jobs didn't matter, raps didn't matter, everyone came to do what ever they could and formed a big ass skirmish line to get him to the hospital asap. Being new to the district I don't know a lot of the people yet, but I am truly proud of the officers that saved him, blocked traffic, prayed, what ever needed to be done. Thank you to all involved, 11th district, saturation, 10th district, cfd, dr's at the hospital and I'm sure others I didn't even see. The one thing I know is put this situation in any district and the results would be the same, no matter how much certain people try to bring us down we will always come together when we need each other most.

---

The only mistake he made was going through the chain of command to get approval to install them, and getting DENIED. Chief of Patrol's office said there was "too much liability" in having a defibrillator in the station. Somehow the defibrillator magically appeared in the 2nd floor gym anyway. Sometimes it's better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.

I work with the coppers involved. They may be new on the job but they are very competent and nice people. An excellent represntation of our department. They definitely deserve a life saving award for their actions. And who better to save than one of our own ( or a family member God forbid) A reminder to us that we should all get the training in case we ever need it. Sign up for any first aide training that is available completely worth it.

I was VERY glad to read about this.

VERY positive and a good reflection on good cops.

Not all is bad in Chicago.

Great job. Everyone should savor this positive act of ordinary people doing an extraordinary job - instead of hanging onto the negative issues of the day.

The Paramedics on the Chicago Fire department have been doing this work for just over 40 years.Kudos to those police officers who made the paramedics job easier before they got to the scene.Great teamwork.Paramedics have always had the backs of police officers.Society could learn a lot from that!
