- Former Chicago Police Department superintendent Garry McCarthy talks publicly for the first time since his firing in the wake of the release of dashcam video in the police shooting of Laquan McDonald.
McCarthy talked about the McDonald case and crime in Chicago during a forum at Harvard University.
The former superintendent says he believes Mayor Rahm Emanuel made him the fall guy for the McDonald shooting despite the fact police shootings as well as overall crime dropped significantly under his tenure.
Gee, what was your first clue there Garry?
- He notes shootings are up significantly over a year ago since his departure and says the city is in a crisis right now.
So the only solution is to hire him back, we guess. Rahm will get right on that.
He also wades into the "controversial" shooting video, stating (as we have many times) that the decision to hold the tape wasn't made at his level - and given that he was the Number One guy on the Department, there's only one person he could have answered to.

I hope you read these comment sections. This weekend will be the first weekend in a decade that I DO NOT come downtown with my kids for the Parade. We usually come down, try to take a water taxi to see the river, grab some food (my kids love Cheezeborgers, Cheezeborgers, at Billy Goat) and watch the parade.
Not a chance this year. Our bodies, wallets, and taxes will be staying out in the burbs. You and the ACLU have turned the city into a cesspool, and Im not putting my kids at risk.

Hey SCC, off topic but it appears that in desperation the braintrust at the ivory tower are telling commanders to tell their Lt.s and Sgt.s to go out and write ISR's...that being a " lead by example" endeavor resulting in the troops writing ISR's since they see the supervisors writing them. This occurred at a staff meeting in a north side district this week. After the commander suggested this the silence was deafening followed by laughter. I can only stress to the officers to keep from writing these ISR's unless absolutely necessary. Every ISR you write ends up at the ACLU and put into a data base for a future class action lawsuit. Stay safe.....

My HS senior daughter got accepted at UIC (a "safety"). If I was considering it at all, I changed my mind after that idiot "engineering" student threatened to kill 16 U Chgo students and police. If that hadn't changed my mind, the fact that he got a slap on the wrist and CONTINUES TO ATTEND THERE, DESPITE REPORTEDLY USING A SCHOOL COMPUTER TO SEND THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE, would have. Clearly you have never been to Compstat where he routinely derided officers for being too lazy or too stupid to implement HIS plan. Surely the failure could not be because the plan was garbage. That thought never entered his thick skull.
I would be more impressed if Garry admitted to the Harvard crowd that both he and Garry knew that combining Districts would diminish manpower in certain areas and people would see less officers be less safe.
I would be more impressed if Garry admitted that letting the supervisors rank diminish to the point where there would be no supervision. He could admit that he knew that not having any supervision to mentor young officers and to take charge of volatile scenes would be directly responsible for people dying and officers lives shattered.
He could admit that his entire tenure here was dedicated to scaling back the Department to save money regardless of the ramifications. You would have had to be the stupidest man on Earth not to see what was coming. They didn't care. It was all about their egos. It was criminal.

My HS senior daughter got accepted at UIC (a "safety"). If I was considering it at all, I changed my mind after that idiot "engineering" student threatened to kill 16 U Chgo students and police. If that hadn't changed my mind, the fact that he got a slap on the wrist and CONTINUES TO ATTEND THERE, DESPITE REPORTEDLY USING A SCHOOL COMPUTER TO SEND THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE, would have. He'd have been a student alongside my daughter in the engineering program?! But even if those factors hadn't ruled UIC out, the Chicago crime rate would have. I wonder what the application rate is at Chicago colleges these days.

That's the University of Illinois-Chicago (basically, located at Halsted between Harrison and Rooosevelt. The goof that made the threats attended U of C... The University of Chicago, located in Hyde Park. Two totally seperate schools. Tuition at UIC is about $15k a year (no books or room and board). U of C is about $44k per year, no books or room and board. Your kid would not be in any classes with that good who sent the threats. If you're going to write the check, at least know what school you're writing it to.
What blows my mind are some of the morons on here. Bag on McCarthy all you want. His numbers were legit about the crime rates. Sure CompStat was BS, but the violence did reduce and everyone already knew the McDonald video was being withheld due to Rahm and his re-election. He got screwed, plain and simple. Since he was booted, the shootings and homicides are off the chart and the interim isn't exactly doing anything about it. So instead of bagging on McCarthy telling it like it is, bag on the current moron and the current gold stars that aren't doing jack about it.

Mccarthy was a good boss. All kidding aside he had our backs. Make all the jokes you want but the guy was a cops cop. McCarthy didn't want the ACLU and belive or not neither did Rahm. The ones that wanted them the least was the people that live and and care about there neighborhoods on the west and southside. Not sure what the ACLU thinks they are accomplishing but the only people they help are criminals. The road to hell is paved in good intentions. God bless and stay safe.

Give us all a break. The only back a boss ever has when the shit really hits the fan is his own. I always love all this "he's a great boss, he has our backs" bullshit. Is anyone on here really so naive as to think that any boss is going to put his livelihood and the security of his family on the line to get your insignificant ass out of a jam? Sure there's bosses that will go to bat for you but as soon as shit goes south and they could possibly get mixed up in it with you, the only thing they'll have for your back is a big old butcher knife. And to be honest, who can really blame them?
Remember the City has your back, just 1 day before Tiny Dancers publicly claimed he had the Supts Back, then terminated him. Now Tiny Dancer wants to come to roll call and say he has our backs. Since McCarthy left the brass have slashed the VRI OT manpower and that may be a cause of the increased violence. The violence was lower under McCarthy because he had police cars working OT in the violent areas and visibility is a major deterrence.
So guys sitting watching red box movies decreased crime? The reason crime was down under him is because that's what he sold the media with his Stats. He's a master at manipulating stats - "overall" crime is down. This mission based box policing doesn't work. Holding down cars on "missions" do nothing but create back logs and give some dogs a nice reason to do nothing for an hour or two while the rest of the cars get shuffled around the district handling calls. The never admitted disbanding TRU was a mistake. No, the slowly tried to cover this mistake by creating more SAT teams - there's like 7 or 8 of them per area. Not to mention the XO, DSS nonsense. Hit the reset button just about everything he did. - start from scratch.

The ACLU is here because of the absolute demands for contact cards despite the rationale. Officers made poor decisions to produce contact cards while under pressure from the command staff. At every Compstat meeting, McCarthy demanded contact cards. The ACLU threatened a huge lawsuit and McCarthy agreed to the changes. Now we have ISR. What or how would McCarthy handle the new ISR? Threaten and demand ISR's in violation of the law? He is fired and we have ISR. Have you ever seen morale is low in CPD? McCarthy promoted this command staff that lacks the most basic leadership skills. Now exempts demand ISR's and they never attended one training class? WTF!

I'm the original poster. The kid who made the threats of violence did indeed attend UIC (not U of Chgo). He made threats against UChgo presumably bc he had an axe to grind w them, along with being a general racist and getting caught up in the BLM vitriol. He was permitted to stay at UIC. I know bc I called the admissions office and asked. Daughter accepted at other better colleges thankfully. Chicago too mismanaged, crime-ridden to even consider it or Loyola.
Thank you officers for all you do. Youre treated like soldiers returning from Vietnam and it's a shame.
