Off Duty Shooting
- An off-duty police officer shot an attacker armed with a bat Saturday night, according to Chicago Police.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Schubert Ave. and Monitor Ave. in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the city's Northwest Side.
According to a release from the Chicago Police Department, a 37-year-old off-duty officer was walking on Schubert Ave when he "encountered an aggressive male subject holding his waistband area."
The officer announced himself and was in the midst of conducting a pat down when the man called out to family members. At that time, a 32-year-old man came outside from a nearby residence and approached the officer, holding a baseball bat.
Police say the officer again identified himself, but the man continued towards him and hit him multiple times in the upper body with the baseball bat.
We, along with others, certainly hope that the Officer didn't hesitate because of the other recent bat incident. The Officer took a number of hits to the body/arm before firing.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Good job G.R. Hopes for a speedy recovery.
A baseball bat? No, it's Spring training and this man was just trying to re-dream his attempt to be a baseball player.
Baseball bats are what athletes use, not criminals. The officer unjustly shot him and over-reacted. Where is his grade school graduation picture?
Let's hold a parade and all walk with baseball bats.
Come on! (sarcasm off)
(Hopefully, he shot him dead!)
WHY IS HE DOING A PROTECTIVE PAT DOWN OFF DUTY? was he gonna give him a receipt too, and do an ISR from home on his IPad??
Hope that assailant is in a wheel chair paralyzed from the neck down... Because given the situation assholes in wheel chairs get $2500 CHA housing vouchers and end up shooting guys on treadmills
Funny (not really) back to making sure officers injuries listed as non-life-threating. Love to have the editor or "journalist" STAND THERE A TAKE JUST ONE FROM SOMEONE WITH A BAT.............
Heal well and fully our brother.
Well wishes for a complete and quick recovery. My prayers with you also.
To paraprase an old credit card commercial: "Side arm, don't leave home without it. "
I'm glad the cop is OK.
Probably a new order had come out. You must actually get hit with a bat first.
Conducting and off duty patdown, come on now dude!! im glad your ok but wtf are you thinking??? i dont even patdown while on duty....anyway stay safe if thats what your gonna be doing....
Of course he hesitated , he is lucky to be alive , he could have been disarmed and murdered .
Do not hesitate , people armed with any weapon , bat , 2x4 , brick , glass bottle , knife must be dealt with quickly , use deadly force before you become chicagos next homicide victim .
This message for all LEO and CCW Permit holders .
Weekdays have been awfully violent lately, Monday's especially, tues in the 60's, stay fetal. Did MaMa of the 7 year old say where he got the gun? BLM.
I understand why the Officer showed such a tremendous amount of self restraint. Its a shame he had to show such restraint when deadly force was unleashed upon him by this p.o.s.
Every Law Enforcement Officer should be respected for the jobs the they perform in the name of public safety. But I guess it isn't that way in a city full of criminals.
Praying for the Officers speedy recovery.
Long time ago, another officer told me when I'm off-duty, just be a good witness. Speedy recovery.
I'm not one to Monday morning quarter back but this copper probably should've just left this shitbag alone & went about his business the ACLU the dept & other assholes Wil pick this apart & throw him under the bus people don't want us being proactive don't know why coppers keep putting themselves in these predicaments when NO ONE has our back even when your in the right!!! STAY FUCKING FETAL!!!!
this is so upsetting I'm sure he thought to himself. I need to take some hits before I fire. Speedy recovery brother.
The media has their own agenda. They act like this officer was going around patting people down while off duty. This officer did what he had to do- I am glad we still have some aggressive officers on this job both on duty and off duty. When I am off duty if trouble comes to me then I meet with it head on. I have my gun, handcuffs and oc spray.
Run. Don't ID yourself as the police. The witnesses will lie. Run and call 911. Don't engage anyone off duty unless there is absolutely no way of fleeing.
According to the Palm Sunday church hippies the officer should have smiled, offered his handgun to the bat-wielding psycho, offered him a hug, apologized for slavery and recited union songs.
Prayers the officer heals, physically and emotionally.
Anti-police idiots are calling the officer a liar. They claim he had been drinking and intentionally targeted the 'victim.'
Yeah, right! I have a lake to sell these a-holes.
What is troubling: Most liberals do not bother reading articles. They leave comments after browsing, misleading headlines.
Then the rumors start.
I believe that was a little too long to wait before taking action. The suspects aggressive behavior towards officer was telegraphed in his body language as he approached, plus that incident quickly turned 2 on 1. Good job and speedy recovery for officer.
Sounds like a lawsuit. I'm sure the offender was feeling disrespected. That's enough for a few mil right?
If you are too stupid to figure out why he was doing a protective pat down that was documented on paper in order to justify what transpired after please retire now. And also if you criticized this officer please retire also. No one will even know you are gone.
Kim Foxx wants to use this story in her next campaign.
Be very aware of her and her "restorative justice" type platform.
She's out to burn coppers and lighten the load of "too many brown and black" prisoners at Cook County Jail.
All law enforcement and their families absolutely must vote Republican for the next States Attorney.
ACLU's position--PO baited Dude by taking a hit with the bat
Loevy & Loevy's(Dumb $$ Dumber's) position--Same as above.
Dept of Justice's position--What was your probable cause??
We use to enforce a rule in the projects...
IF you have a baseball bat you must have a baseball...
IF you have a golf club you must have a golf ball...
IF you have a hockey stick you must have a puck...
and so on through, tennis, curling, jai alai and so on...
(Exception: bowling ball yes, pin(s) no)
Speedy recovery Officer.
Keep your heads on a swivel on and off duty.
Never know when when you're gonna have to be that huckleberry.
F-that. I would've smoked this dude after the first step he took towards me.
"Warrior Cop Mentality!"
That's what the liberal democrat progressives
and the #blm stooges are saying what is wrong
with Chicago Policing.
"You Chicago Cops are too authoritative and way too
self-protective. You don't give people a chance to
express their "frustrations" to you. What's wrong is that
you Chicago Cops are so quick to resort to your fists,
night-sticks and guns in response to people who just
need space and opportunity to just vent their "frustration"
toward you. You Chicago Cops need to be more patient
and self-sacrificing because your Warrior Cop insistence
on "Going Home To Our Loved Ones at Any/All Cost,"
is very selfish, provocative and has a combative if not
angry and vicious undertone that we feel has no place
in 21st century Policing...."
>Stands back.
Admires work...<
Hmmmm?
Ahhh!
A bottle of "liquid bread"
(Tripel Karmeliet Belgian Ale)
will sing a merry accompaniment
to the task at hand...
Just you wait.
Doubt.
Hesitation.
Double-Guessing in the midst
of dire need for firm and decisive
action to be taken.
"Duty To Retreat" coming soon
to a Police Department near you.
The progressives consider all of these as
some kind of "come uppance" for all of you
unenlightened, angry for no good reason,
blue collar legacy Police churls.
Unless they're threatening you (NOT some self-initiated off duty street stop shit because you THOUGHT you saw a weapon) or it directly involves your property or loved ones, why the fuck would you engage anyone? Professional Witness is all you're [somewhat] required to be OD in instances like this. Call 911 and let the on duty folks handle it unless exigent circumstances dictate otherwise.
And before the flaming starts, I WAS on scene and know the whole story.
Dumb shit will find you, no need to go looking for it, son.
Many "Monday morning quarterbacks here" If you were not there easy to criticize, just glad copper will be OK we don't need a coppers funeral Praying copper heals quickly and crook county court does not release scumbag for more doses of mayhem on innocent taxpayers!
On another note look here read the article apparently we have many Pinocchio at pension board who said rahm made the required payments according to this article not paid until end of the year Hello kenny, lappe, deano get out of the closet and say something!
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-chicago-pension-borrowing-met-0322-20160321-story.html
I, as a civilian, applaud the officer for being pro-active about a suspicious individual. Not easy to do in this city in these times. I certainly hope he didn't hesitate because of the other baseball bat incident. Enough with the B.S. of prosecuting cops for doing their jobs.

To this poster ^^^ and others like it.....you weren't there, you don't know the whole story and/or how it went down, so shut the fuck up. G.R. is a good guy and not some off-duty cowboy. The newspaper story doesn't tell what led up to it either. It's not my place to say what happened, but if someone else in the know wishes to, then that's up to them. I do know what happened and if it were me, I'd have probably done the same thing, so until you know the truth, mind yourself with yourself.
Glad he is ok but wtf was he thinking??? Not the time to be superman off duty.
Why not just call it in?
The media has their own agenda. They act like this officer was going around patting people down while off duty. I welcome your honor and your great attitude, seriously. The only thing I have to say is please be careful, its bizzaro world. I used to be very very aggressive, been in three shootings, got beat down off of roosevelt and independence by three savages, and broke a few bones, BUT today is a different world. You might be hung out to dry. Watch your back brother.
for all of you criticizing the Officer for getting involved if you have any experience then you know sometime it just jumps out at you and you have NO choice. And anyone worth talking to under suspicious circumstances should be patted down for safety. come guys give em a break
I have feeling that the family member who came down with a bat came out of a section 8 dwelling.
"Funny (not really) back to making sure officers injuries listed as non-life-threating. Love to have the editor or "journalist" STAND THERE A TAKE JUST ONE FROM SOMEONE WITH A BAT............." Very true!
The media is saying it was a small souvenier bat, ok then media, take one to the head from this little bat, or one from this little pocket gun...'tards !
Plus POS assailant is on parole - AGG Kidnapping
Why is he doing a patdown? Because he is the fucking police and probably announced his office because he thought this piece of shit had a gun. Oh never mind. Some police would have just walked by this pos and prayed they didn't get shot in the back.
Until the details are known about the initial confrontation people should shut up! I'm tired of hearing pussies opinions of what they would of done
And before the flaming starts, I WAS on scene and know the whole story.

So in order to make yourself feel better, you know because you are superior to this officer, you decided to criticize him on a public blog. You are some kind of stupid, a real officer's officer aren't you?
plenty of experience plenty of years and and plenty more, awesome that THE COPPER IS DOING FINE but everyone know that nows not the time to do stops work or even patdowns such as this off duty at that,,,,,you see smthing say somthing call it in and avoid the headaches aches or pains,,,,,PATDWONS STOP ETC,,,,LMAO REALLY!!! HEY BUT IF THATS WHAT THIS COPS GONNA BE DOING GOOD LUCK!!!
WHY IS HE DOING A PROTECTIVE PAT DOWN OFF DUTY? was he gonna give him a receipt too, and do an ISR from home on his IPad??

Lol so people are posers (or posters as you say) because they understand that it was idiotic for the office to take any type of action beyond calling the police based on the story that was provided. I guess it safe for me to assume that you're either not the police or worst just a dumbass out here making the same dumb decisions as he did. Glad the officer wasn't badly hurt however his troubles are probably just begining. Stay safe out here officers.
I wasn't there, not quarterbacking, but -- one good blow to the head and that ofc. could have died on the spot, or been permanently disabled with problems lasting the rest of his life. Plus -- would have lost his weapon, and after that we could only guess about what might have happened to him and to others once a VIOLENT, WORTHLESS THUG becomes armed with a loaded firearm.
Doesn't seem like a good idea, in general, to let them in that close if you can possibly help it.
Prayers and best wishes for the officer's full recovery.
Now, nor never was the "right" time to do what this officer did. "Right" in figurative terms, that is. When you're Off-duty and doing pat downs/police work, no one knows who you are (not taking up for the assailant(s), so anything can happen. Off-duty and telling someone you're a cop doesn't automatically make you a cop to that person. You guys can bash people on here for looking at this from a different angle, or even a close-minded angle, but it's true. The officer did right thing, It just wasn't a smart thing to do.
