Off Duty Shooting

  • An off-duty police officer shot an attacker armed with a bat Saturday night, according to Chicago Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Schubert Ave. and Monitor Ave. in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the city's Northwest Side.

According to a release from the Chicago Police Department, a 37-year-old off-duty officer was walking on Schubert Ave when he "encountered an aggressive male subject holding his waistband area."

The officer announced himself and was in the midst of conducting a pat down when the man called out to family members. At that time, a 32-year-old man came outside from a nearby residence and approached the officer, holding a baseball bat.

Police say the officer again identified himself, but the man continued towards him and hit him multiple times in the upper body with the baseball bat.
We, along with others, certainly hope that the Officer didn't hesitate because of the other recent bat incident. The Officer took a number of hits to the body/arm before firing.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

A baseball bat? No, it's Spring training and this man was just trying to re-dream his attempt to be a baseball player.

Baseball bats are what athletes use, not criminals. The officer unjustly shot him and over-reacted. Where is his grade school graduation picture?

Let's hold a parade and all walk with baseball bats.

Come on! (sarcasm off)

(Hopefully, he shot him dead!)

I understand why the Officer showed such a tremendous amount of self restraint. Its a shame he had to show such restraint when deadly force was unleashed upon him by this p.o.s.
Every Law Enforcement Officer should be respected for the jobs the they perform in the name of public safety. But I guess it isn't that way in a city full of criminals.
Praying for the Officers speedy recovery.

The media has their own agenda. They act like this officer was going around patting people down while off duty. This officer did what he had to do- I am glad we still have some aggressive officers on this job both on duty and off duty. When I am off duty if trouble comes to me then I meet with it head on. I have my gun, handcuffs and oc spray.

Run. Don't ID yourself as the police. The witnesses will lie. Run and call 911. Don't engage anyone off duty unless there is absolutely no way of fleeing.

According to the Palm Sunday church hippies the officer should have smiled, offered his handgun to the bat-wielding psycho, offered him a hug, apologized for slavery and recited union songs.

Prayers the officer heals, physically and emotionally.

Anti-police idiots are calling the officer a liar. They claim he had been drinking and intentionally targeted the 'victim.'

Yeah, right! I have a lake to sell these a-holes.

What is troubling: Most liberals do not bother reading articles. They leave comments after browsing, misleading headlines.
Then the rumors start.

I believe that was a little too long to wait before taking action. The suspects aggressive behavior towards officer was telegraphed in his body language as he approached, plus that incident quickly turned 2 on 1. Good job and speedy recovery for officer.

Be very aware of her and her "restorative justice" type platform.
She's out to burn coppers and lighten the load of "too many brown and black" prisoners at Cook County Jail.
All law enforcement and their families absolutely must vote Republican for the next States Attorney.

"Warrior Cop Mentality!"

That's what the liberal democrat progressives
and the #blm stooges are saying what is wrong
with Chicago Policing.

"You Chicago Cops are too authoritative and way too
self-protective. You don't give people a chance to
express their "frustrations" to you. What's wrong is that
you Chicago Cops are so quick to resort to your fists,
night-sticks and guns in response to people who just
need space and opportunity to just vent their "frustration"
toward you. You Chicago Cops need to be more patient
and self-sacrificing because your Warrior Cop insistence
on "Going Home To Our Loved Ones at Any/All Cost,"
is very selfish, provocative and has a combative if not
angry and vicious undertone that we feel has no place
in 21st century Policing...."

>Stands back.
Admires work...<

Hmmmm?
Ahhh!

A bottle of "liquid bread"
(Tripel Karmeliet Belgian Ale)
will sing a merry accompaniment
to the task at hand...

Just you wait.

Doubt.
Hesitation.
Double-Guessing in the midst
of dire need for firm and decisive
action to be taken.

"Duty To Retreat" coming soon
to a Police Department near you.

The progressives consider all of these as
some kind of "come uppance" for all of you
unenlightened, angry for no good reason,
blue collar legacy Police churls.

Unless they're threatening you (NOT some self-initiated off duty street stop shit because you THOUGHT you saw a weapon) or it directly involves your property or loved ones, why the fuck would you engage anyone? Professional Witness is all you're [somewhat] required to be OD in instances like this. Call 911 and let the on duty folks handle it unless exigent circumstances dictate otherwise.

And before the flaming starts, I WAS on scene and know the whole story.

Dumb shit will find you, no need to go looking for it, son.

To this poster ^^^ and others like it.....you weren't there, you don't know the whole story and/or how it went down, so shut the fuck up. G.R. is a good guy and not some off-duty cowboy. The newspaper story doesn't tell what led up to it either. It's not my place to say what happened, but if someone else in the know wishes to, then that's up to them. I do know what happened and if it were me, I'd have probably done the same thing, so until you know the truth, mind yourself with yourself.

I welcome your honor and your great attitude, seriously. The only thing I have to say is please be careful, its bizzaro world. I used to be very very aggressive, been in three shootings, got beat down off of roosevelt and independence by three savages, and broke a few bones, BUT today is a different world. Lol so people are posers (or posters as you say) because they understand that it was idiotic for the office to take any type of action beyond calling the police based on the story that was provided. I guess it safe for me to assume that you're either not the police or worst just a dumbass out here making the same dumb decisions as he did. Glad the officer wasn't badly hurt however his troubles are probably just begining. Stay safe out here officers.

I wasn't there, not quarterbacking, but -- one good blow to the head and that ofc. could have died on the spot, or been permanently disabled with problems lasting the rest of his life. Plus -- would have lost his weapon, and after that we could only guess about what might have happened to him and to others once a VIOLENT, WORTHLESS THUG becomes armed with a loaded firearm.

Doesn't seem like a good idea, in general, to let them in that close if you can possibly help it.

Prayers and best wishes for the officer's full recovery.

Now, nor never was the "right" time to do what this officer did. "Right" in figurative terms, that is. When you're Off-duty and doing pat downs/police work, no one knows who you are (not taking up for the assailant(s), so anything can happen. Off-duty and telling someone you're a cop doesn't automatically make you a cop to that person. You guys can bash people on here for looking at this from a different angle, or even a close-minded angle, but it's true. The officer did right thing, It just wasn't a smart thing to do.
