One Day Strike Coming

  • The Chicago Teachers Union voted Wednesday evening to approve a one-day “showdown” strike on April 1 — which will include a massive downtown rally — to bring attention to ongoing contract negotiations and the state’s education funding crisis.

“I think it’ll be a clear message. Based on the current organizing, we’ll shut this city down,” Tammie Vinson, a special education teacher at Oscar DePriest Elementary School said after the vote at the International Operating Engineers Hall.
You know what would also send a message? Rahm firing each and every teacher that walks out - not that we'd ever wish evil upon a group of people that sent pizzas to Ferguson along with a few bus-loads of supporters, is teaching anti-police classes and garners support from assholes who batter police during so-called "peaceful" protests.

Fuck the teachers. All they do is cry about more money for the children which in reality means more raises for the teachers and the students are still no better off, with 60% grad rate. And the assholes are crying because they may have to contribute to their pensions. Fuck the assholes. On top of all that, their pension COLA every year is compounded. So fuck the assholes.

Let them strike and walk off the job - and NEVER come back.

It's not like they are cranking out a lot of Rhodes Scholars. Hell, they are not even cranking out a lot of graduates.

If we institute Pay for Performance in the CPS, teachers will have to start paying money back instead of collecting a check.

Performance doesn't mean "just showing up". What is the drop-out rate for CPS today? 45%? Higher?

Yeah, they deserve a raise -- NOT.

I guess those devoted caretakers of the children want an extra long weekend.

Whoever is assigned to that rally, be very careful. CTU has aligned with BLM to get numbers for this rally and there is nothing either group would love more than to have an officer play into their hands. A great big F.U. to CTU and shame on every one of its members that participate in this illegal action.

I can no longer support a communist teacher's union. They can go fuck themselves. The waste, fraud, and abuse that goes on there is disgusting. The communist red shirts are even more disgusting. It would be awesome to fire all the CTU members who walk out on their jobs. It would be even better if they also put them on a Lock-Out list, not eligible for rehire. -Then applications could be taken for those who really want to teach to be teachers.

“I think it’ll be a clear message. Based on the current organizing, we’ll shut this city down..."

I think they've hit the ultimate fetal situation. Nothing but "confusion" and finger-pointing back and forth and filling out of forms if something goes down.

Five arrests at the massive anti-Trump riot? Let's aim for zero here.

I find it disturbing that the CTU is using the phrase "shut down" just like all the anarchists are doing at political rallies.

I thought teachers were supposed to be smart?

Every time the CTU tries to make Rahm and CPS (and now Claypool and Rauner) look bad, it ends up biting them in the ass. Let's look at he last strike, what did the CTU win that they said they did? The only thing they won was the opportunity to make look Rahm look bad and go drinking early after a few hours of striking every day. THAT'S IT!!

Oh yeah, the CTU got its members a 7% raise over three years, which turned into a paycut due to the school day and year being lengthened. And, this pay raise ended up closing 50 underutilized schools in mostly black and brown neighborhoods and costing thousands of CTU members their jobs. Ask one of these teachers if the CTU helped them and they tell you the real answer.

Guess what folks? The CPS released a list of 300 underutilized schools in January. Gives what's going to happen to 50-75 of them in the near future? Yep, same old, same old.

This 'ill-advised' one-day walkout does is give Rahm the reason to push Rauner to ban teacher strikes in IL, like 38 states already do. And, it give more fodder for Rauner to takeover CPS and declare bankruptcy.

This one-day walkout has UGLY written all over it for the CTU and the teachers. And, if the brainless leaders of the CTU call for a mid-May strike, it's going to be all over for a majority of the 27,000 teachers (especially those making over $75,000). THINK air traffic controllers during the Reagan administration.

The bottom line is the CTU thinks they still have public support on their side. They're wrong here.

My advice to the CTU is to accept the fact their members will have to pay the full 9% pension pickup, not 2% as been the case since 1981, and agree to a 4-yr contract. A contract, where by the 4th year, their members would be able to recoup the 7% they claim to have lost for the pension pickup.

My only question is why didn't Rahm have the balls to pull this 7% pickup from the teachers in 2012? Oh that's right, he pulled the ability of the teachers to bank 325 unused sick days to get one-time payouts (paid at the rate of pay in their last year and not what the rate of pay each day was earned) and then, using those one-time payouts to enhance their yearly pensions by as much as $6,000/year.

Let's see, CPS teachers currently gets the 7% pension pickup, COLA, Step/Lane increases, and raises. All of this since 1981 and when many of the 27,000 are allowed to live outside the city on residency waivers and hired before Nov. 20, 1996.

The teachers were dumb enough to agree last time, it's easy to promise unions workers anything when you know your going to phase out or lay-off by privatizing anyways. Remember that when your voting all you union workers, just because a polictician promises dosent mean it's gonna benefit you. There was a reason for unions at one time, and the need is still there for some, but a large majority of unskilled union workers do not deserve what they get. Whenever I worked Union jobs it seemed the majority of workers that need the unions help were the lazy abusers, not all but most.

I can't feel sorry for them especially when the rest of the city gets screwed every contract.

They support Democrats and that is who screws them every time. They support police haters and criminals, who in turn do not support them back. Now they have turned their back on the police. Good luck with that CTU and teachers, you have no friends left.

Sorry, no sympathy from officers in this direction. They can march their social justice communist police-hating asses right into the goddamn lake for all I care. CPS is another bloated over-administrative bureaucratic waste of tax dollars. They want more money, go work a second job like everyone else, or cut these top heavy positions like vice principal, 2nd vice principal, dean, etc. and use that money to increase teachers' salary. Also, start auditing federal grant money to see exactly where all the funds are going in these schools. Last story I remember was about a storage room full of iPads meant for students which were all stolen and never recovered. Tax money should't be paying for shit like that in the first place.

How would you do this? You would endanger lives. I would be for no tickets and no arrest day and no stops and take your sweet time to non emergency calls, but that would be as far as I would go. i would not want to endanger life. Or are you saying call off sick for the day? I am tired of the police being the liberal punching bag, but that might be going too far. You can see what is happening in this country, a great swing to the left in politics. First Obama and now Bernie who leads all national polls by 15 %.The left wing democratic socialists are going to be running the country and that is not good for the working man and especially not good for the police. Trump does not have a chance. The demographics of this country have changed and without the black and hispanic vote you will not win a national election. And, Trump does not have those and he is losing the female vote.

I'm sure 80% of you reading this have no idea just how much work goes into being a Teacher. The good old days that we think Teachers have are long gone. Take the time and ask one of your fellow Officers whose married to a CPS Teacher. The CTU alignment with blm and other anti-Police groups was forced onto the rank and file without any input. Most Teachers on the N/W Side have indicated that that will not march or support the CTU with these other groups. I have been a CPD officer for 21 years both in Patrol and in specialized Units and have been married to a CPS Teacher for well over 2 decades and have watched the school system be turned into a public housing/daycare/free food institution.I see first hand what a Teacher goes through to prepare for work. The perks of being a Teacher are long gone, along with most their holidays and paid summers off so Please get over it. I am just as frustrated and upset with the CTU and their Union Boards decision to join these Police haters and have phoned,e-mailed and written with no response. Its kind of like FOP Lodge 7 and the city council, The bigwigs make the deals with the devil and us blue shirts shovel the shit....

....love the cheap lawn chair analogy....

I am a retired teacher and my husband is retired CPD. CTU is a union not an agent of social change. A s a former school delegate etc I do believe Karen Lewis and her slate made an error in supporting BLM. Delivering the pizzas was just plain stupid. Many CTU members do not support the stance CTU has taken.

I had to call the police twice in 38 years and both times I was very glad the police arrested the students. I guess I am disheartened by the vitriolic comments on this site. Your job is hard, if not impossible these days but I would never lump all police together as some on this site have done to the teachers.

CPD has job fairs and the line goes around the block. CPS has job fairs and no one comes-CPS has had to recruit teachers from foreign countries and even with the visa they dont stay in CPS. If CPS ever offered 20 years and out and eliminated the age penalty which is 6% a year for every year you are under 60 unless you have 34 years I believe CPS wouldn't be hard pressed to fill vacancies in the rough schools.

There are many sharp teachers in CPS who could teach anywhere but view teaching in CPS as a calling as Im sure there are many in CPD who could get hired in the suburbs for more money but also choose to stay. We need to stop the name calling.

About the only thing CPS has going for it is the selective enrollment schools. The majority of the teachers that work at these schools are leaps & bounds over their counterparts in the "neighborhood" schools in terms of providing quality education to the children. Look no further than where these schools rank locally and nationally in terms of academic achievement. What you have to realize though is that these are the kids that are extremely bright and go through pretty rigorous testing to even be offered a seat at one of the schools. The teachers there as a rule don't have to put up with the ignorance that usually accompanies teaching CPS students. THESE are the teachers I hate to see get thrown in the mix because they understand the importance of the education they're actually providing. And the ones I've personally had contact and interaction with when my kids went through the classical programs were dedicated, genuine educators. So in my opinion CPS in it's entirety is not a lost cause, they just have their assholes like we at CPD do.

6:05am 3/23 "I thought teachers were supposed to be smart". I hope your opinion is rightfully held by a minority of minds. Some teachers in CPS are of course however it seems based on what they demonstrate in public, most are merely members of organized labor. Much like members of the Teamsters Union, SEIU or Laborers as some examples. They are not professionals, rather they behave like...like laborers. I cannot understand why so called professionals would ever align themselves with members of black lives matter and other left wing groups unless they are receiving funds to their CTU coffers from Move on Org or other influence peddlers. Nothing irritates me more when someone like Karen Lewis gets the better of Rahm because I thought Rahm the smarter of the two. Then I got it one day, he just lets her play him so he can give them a good contract and he in turn gets the support of the teachers. It is all a show. Damn.

Um, the fact that kids in selective enrollment schools have to pass rigorous tests just to get a seat means that they are already extremely high performing students. The SE teachers did not get them to that level; they were already there! And you can thank their elementary school teachers and their parents for that!

And the fact that these teachers don't have to deal with the typical CPS ignorance means that they understand the importance of education? So teachers who aren't fortunate enough to have elite, well prepared students don't understand the importance of education? Really?

There are weak and strong teachers at all CPS schools. Working at a SE school doesn't automatically make you a good teacher; many SE teachers would falter at neighborhood schools.

What's clear is that teachers and students are stuck in the middle of an insane political battle between Karen Lewis and the Rahm/Rauner. It's turned into who can put their foot on the gas hardest.

CTU's alignment with anti-police, BLM protest groups has done irreparable harm. Karen Lewis's election is in May, if there was anyone opposing her, I'd vote for them.

You have the audacity to ask for more than what you have now and you're off for the summer. 2.5 months in the summer. 2 weeks in the winter. 1 week in the spring. As the husband of a Chicago teacher, being paid for the hours swiped in is a excellent idea. My wife starts at 0630 hrs to make family phone calls. Then will leave work at 4PM after working with students who need help. But what about the hours at home creating, amending and updating lesson plans? Grading papers and keeping a web site, Gradespeed updated daily? Or does mandatory work at home count under your plan? Teachers are forced or strongly urged to donate time for meetings with parents, enrolling new students and maintaining clubs for students? Every week assistant principals are changing lesson plans and want everything documented and duplicated. Working a beat car for 8.5 hrs and doing nothing but answering service calls sounds easy.

You're comparing grading papers and prepping lesson plans to responding to answering shots fired, man with a gun, mental off his meds, domestic fights etc, service calls? You cannot possibly equate the two. And if the educational administration expects teachers to run extracurricular activities, then yes, they should get paid for their time running those programs. Otherwise, get the parents to donate their time and run those programs. If teachers want to get paid for lesson prep and grading/reviewing work then they can stay on the clock and get paid for it while at school. Of course anyone who works should get paid for their time, but that comparison meant to diminish what we as police deal with on a daily basis was way off.

That's not how it works. Teachers are paid for 7 hours per day, regardless of how many extra hours they put in. Some teachers stay until 5 or 6, but they still get paid the same as if they left at 3. Teachers put in lots of extra, unpaid hours at school and at home.

"If teachers want to get paid for lesson prep and grading/reviewing work then they can stay on the clock and get paid for it while at school."

That's the common misconception. Although we have to punch in and out, we don't get paid past the end of the determined work day. For example, my CPS day starts at 7:30 and ends at 2:28. I get paid if the same if I punch out at 2:28 or 5:28. So why stay at work? I'd rather bring my extra stuff home and do it there. But when students come for help after school, we don't get paid for that. We also don't get paid for after school meetings, which a lot of principals now like to schedule after school ends, so they can have us doing security during our prep periods. And saying "no" to things like security duty isn't an option anymore.

Teaching used to be a decent gig 10 years ago - not anymore. I warn all my kids' friends: don't be a teacher. And I'd kill my kids if any of them went into education.

Teaching still is a good gig. The problem is Daley and your CTU let the pension problem get out of hand. And, when Daley lost the Olympics, things got so bad he couldn't borrow from Peter to Paul and he said adios! Teachers blame Rahm for everything, but, the only reason they blame him is because he said NO! to all their great perks. now, the gravy train is on its way out of Chicago, especially as public support isn't on the teacher's side this time around like in 2012.

SCHOOL DAY & YEAR: CPS teachers had the shortest school day until 2013. Grade school kids were going to school at 0830 and getting out at 1430 (6-hr days, now 7-hr days) and high school kids were in school at 0800 and getting out at 1430 (6.5 hr days, now 7.5 hr days). The school year for students was also increased from 177 days to 181. (Whether Karen Lewis wants to admit it or not, the teachers did get a 7% raise from the last strike. The 7% raise was spread out over three school years an both CPS and the CTU agreed this raise as for the longer school day and year. Though, teachers got their calculators out and figured out the raises were actually part of a paycut due to the longer school day and year.)

UNUSED SICK DAYS: Teachers lost the ability to bank (325) sick days for a one-time payout at retirement. The payout was paid at the daily rate of pay teachers were getting in their last year of work, not hat each day was earned at throughout their careers. Then, teachers used their payouts to enhance their pensions by as much as $6000/year (known as PEP, Pension Enhancement Program). Now, teachers can bank only (40) unused sick days for time towards their retirement years and not for money. But, the grandfathered banked sick days can still be cashed out at retirement, just not used to enhance their pensions.

7% PENSION CONTRIBUTION BY CPS/RESIDENCY: This is the next perk CPS teachers will lose, whether they like it or not. The CTU agrees with CPS on slowly eliminated this perk and NO teachers see this a paycut. CPS teachers have been getting this 7% pickup by CPS and they've only been paying ONLY 2% towards their own pensions. This, while all other city employees must pay the full 9% and are forced to live in Chicago.

Currently, CPS teachers, admin, staffers, and other employees hired before November 20, 1996 can live any where they want as they're grandfathered-in with the old residency policy. And, there's thousands of teachers getting residency waivers to allow them to live outside Chicago as long as they work in a need area (which is 40% of the subjects areas). The one problem here is nobody in the CPS Talent office has been monitoring these waivers (or looking the other way) and many non-need area employees have been getting residency waivers. Some of the positions which employees are getting waivers when they're not supposed to are: Principal, Asst. Principal, Security Guard, Admin Asst, and Manager.

STEP/LANE INCREASES: This has been the BIG bone of contention between CPS and the CTU due to two factors. One, is many teachers have been getting $2500-$3500 more per year in pay due to having an advance degree and many teachers aren't using their advanced degrees in their current positions. ex.) PE teacher with a Bachelor's degree getting a Masters in Administration>

The second bone of contention is CPS teachers have been getting the 7% pension pickup by CPS, COLA, annual raises, and the step/lane increases all together. here's an explanation of this on this link, which shows teachers can easily get a 11% raises in one year:

Steps and lanes: Understanding how Chicago public school teachers get multiple pay raises each year

Considering the Police in Chicago are respected even less than The Mayor (whereas Teachers rate higher), you might want to do a little bridge building, and if standing with other union members is too much for you, don't be surprised if when the axeman comes for you that NO-ONE supports you. I really don't think you have too much credit with the general public right now. I really doubt you will have much luck if you think you can stand alone in the fight against the Mayor

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

When they came for the CTU and its members,
nothing was done as they turned their backs on the CPD.

Enjoy your April 1st bandit strike as this will lead to the making teacher strikes illegal in IL.

CTU has conceded that a strike over contract negotiations would be illegal, but claims that the April 1 strike is legal because it is not about the contract, but an unfair labor practice.

CTU is incorrect.

First, Illinois law does not differentiate between the reasons for a strike, it simply provides a set of conditions that must always be met in order for a union to strike. CTU has not met all of those conditions, so under Illinois law, the strike is illegal.

Second, whether teachers should receive step-and-lane salary increases is a contract issue in the ongoing collective-bargaining negotiations between CPS and CTU.

When CTU brought an unfair labor practice claim before the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, or IELRB, challenging the freeze of step-and-lane raises, the board unanimously rejected CTU’s request for an injunction to require CPS to pay those salary increases. Board Chairwoman Andrea Waintroob explained: “For us to force the employer to pay lanes and steps, when the employer is bargaining to freeze lanes and steps, would really put a poison pill into the negotiating process.”

CTU President Karen Lewis dismisses the decision, calling the IELRB a “Rauner-stacked board.” However, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed just three of the five members of the IELRB, and the decision against CTU was unanimous. In addition, one of Rauner’s appointments, Lynne Sered, was originally appointed to the IELRB by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and re-appointed by former Gov. Pat Quinn.

The fact that CTU has a process available to it to pursue unfair labor practice claims against CPS shows exactly why CTU’s justification for a strike makes no sense. Allowing CTU to strike at the same time it pursues a claim for an unfair labor practice would allow CTU to strike virtually any time it wanted, since union leadership could always come up with some action by CPS that it claims is an unfair labor practice, justified or not. And even though CTU’s attempt to get an injunction failed before the Board, CTU can still pursue an unfair labor practice charge through the administrative trial process like it is doing now.
