Andrea Zopp, the Deputy Mayor, is not in the line of mayoral succession. It is a made up title. The actual Vice Mayor is a member of the City Council. Zopp is not an alderman.
If Rahm resigns, the Vice Mayor temporarily succeeds him until the City Council chooses a new mayor (remember Alderman David Orr replacing Harold Washington and, shortly thereafter being succeeded by Alderman Eugene Sawyer in 1987). Later, there would be a special election in which the voters would cast their ballots for a successor (last time out this process saw Richard M. Daley succeed Sawyer).
The only time this procedure was not followed was in 1933 when the Democratic legislature passed a law permitting the appointment of a new mayor (Edward Kelly) from outside of the City Council. In this power grab, the legislature also dispensed with the special election in order to block the presumed candidacy of Republican "Big Bill" Thompson. Kelly was permitted to complete the balance of Cermak's term and did not stand for election until 1935.
For Zopp to replace Rahm, she would either need to become an alderman (to become the interim mayor) or win a special election (to serve as the mayor for the balance of Emanuel's term). Since Hillary Clinton has been treating Rahm like poison, I do not see him advancing to an important position in her campaign.
If Hillary were stupid enough to select Emanuel, she would risk putting Illinois in play since the solid Democratic vote from Chicago would be greatly diminished.
It is a nice pipe dream, but it seems highly doubtful before November.

I was an "acting" Sgt for 19 years until I retired in 2010. My "acting" career started when I was officially promoted in 1991. Hated every minute of it.

When I was in SOS we had dignitary details and we started to fill out slips for out of grade pay ad security specialists. Only 1 Sergeant had enough balls to defend us, thanks Sgt. Stas, he was told that we were not officially trained and he told the powers to be that none of the Mayors detail had proper training either. Well we did get the pay a few times because he signed the slips when he was acting W/C. Sure wish he was still around and not retired.

There is NO way Emanuel would warn his security people he was leaving Chicago. He probably wouldn't even tell his KIDS, much less his lowly security detail.

Again, he not that bright and Hillary if she is gets the nomination is going to have someone who is smart and can work with congress. rahm is not that person.
In the event of a mayoral vacancy the aldermen have to pick from themselves. So unless someone resigns and Zopp gets appointed alderman first she ain't going to be appointed mayor.

Yes, he is giving the detail the heads up because he wants them happy when the end arrives. Don't forget they do know some secrets (like the truth about the sons "robbery") and he does not want his next gig spoiled by the truth coming out. It has been know for several weeks that one of the detail has been whispering to the media and a bad story is coming.

I'd say Valerie Jarrett, except her "senior adviser" thing, The Voice Behind The Curtain, already swings far more weight than any ceremonial VP. She likes it back there in the shadows. Unelected, with total influence and very little public accountability. Gets her a full Secret Service detail, too.

I see two likely versions of the "robbery" . . .
1) O'Rahma's kid tried to invest in some recreational pharmaceuticals and got jacked.
Or . . .
2) Maybe the kid tried to be enterprising in the rec pharma field (it's a growth industry . . . just like cancer) and got roughed up for muscling in on someone else's turf.

We need more info from the guy who says that someone from the detail has been tipping Rahm's hand to the press for the last couple of weeks, and that something big is coming. We can only pray that something big is indeed coming. Please?
