This Isn't a "Museum"

We had a thought earlier today, right in the middle of the Detective Exam. No idea where it came from, but it went something like this:
  • George Lucas, Rahm, Mrs. Lucas, "phather" Pfleger are all pushing for this Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Now Lucas sold LucasFilm to the Walt Disney Company for a little more than $4 billion. Disney is, shall we say, very firm, in protecting what is theirs. Litigious-ly firm. Aggressively so in many cases. Disney isn't going to spend $4 Billion (with a "B") on something and then let Lucas run around and make money off of it. Does anyone in their right mind think that Disney is going to sit back and let there be a "Star Wars" museum outside of California or Florida more than a thirty minute ride from Disney World, Disneyland, somewhere a Disney cruise ship can dock, or anywhere that Disney has a very large, corporate presence? We certainly don't. And without the "Star Wars" hook, what does Lucas have?
We looked this whole thing up - it's an art collection. Stuff by Rockwell, Degas, Renoir, plus other stuff that "tells a story." Don't we already have an Art Institute? And countless galleries? Aren't there traveling exhibits that make stops across the country annually with all sorts of art collections? We recall many hundreds of them over the years.

Narrative Art? Isn't there a Museum of Broadcast Communications? A Columbia School of Broadcasting?? Any number of universities with media programs who'd be happy to host a monstrous Lucas collection?

But Chicago is supposed to bend over backwards to accommodate a billionaire and his hedge-fund managing wife who is saying, "Won't someone think of the black and brown children?!!??!" to anyone who will listen.

Ain't buying it. We've seen the type of art the younger generation embraces (all colors, not just black and brown) and quite frankly, they wouldn't appreciate Norman Rockwell, nor Degas and certainly not Renoir. This is crap and taxpayers are going to be saddled with a white elephant in short order should it come to pass.

Think about this. Way back, Hop Along Cassidy and Daniel Boone were every bit as big as Star Wars is today. What if the totally corrupt, Daley Crime family, had spend millions on a Hop Along Cassidy Museum? See the point? Star wars will fade away for some new interest or fad. And Rahms hopes of some national political office will fade away as well. Now, if only the thieving Daleys and their in-laws, cousins and assorted ass kissers would fade away as well, the world would be a better place,.

If this city had history of sound financial management I would not have a problem with the Lucas museum. However Chicago does not. Parking meters anyone? Pension debt? Unfunded schools? Streets full of pot holes, closing mental health facilities, cut back in public safety? Trust me now the Lucas museum is a great deal for the city and will bring in billions of dollars, create millions of jobs and best of all be for the children.

Smart, SCC. This whole thing is a gimmick. A scam, from the beginning. With no more art in it than a few dowdy pictures hanging on a wall with little knickknacks, a gift shop, restaurant and a view. Kinda like a 'Man Cave'. Ask how tall it will be. The height is enormous. Georgie probably wants to he cremated, ashes tossed into Lake Mich so he can 'watch' his memorial from the shore line. Sounds as goofy as the story Rahm and Melody are telling. Disney owns R2D2, not George Lucas. One print media has already reported George is saying very little about what will be inside the ugly thing. Cheaters, cheaters, liars, liars. And Taxpayers pay the Chump Change. You are good SCC!!!

Cleveland has got the Music Hall of Fame, we should have the Rap Music Institute of Chi-Rockinstan.

We could even make a school out of it so rappers could go there instead of high school. Or, would that be a college? It'd be something.

I posted a link in the earlier thread about Mrs. Lucas and Mr. Emanuel's change of tactics.
The link said pretty much what you say in this topic header.
It was a critique of 'what went wrong' in Lucas' effort to place his 'museum' at the Presidio, with a prime view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
They determined he was obstinate about wanting his building to stand out, not fit in. He refused to follow their height, location and design guidelines, despite three years of negotiations. He was insulting to the staff. His building, which was in competition with two other firms for the location, was not a giant silver Jabba the Hut, but a classical design, which was jarringly out of step with the surroundings.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Except for the part where Rahm INVITED him to build it here when his negotiations with the Presidio board reached an impasse. > Rahm INVITED him to build it here.< And now Rahm has major egg on his face because he wasn't able to follow through on the invitation, the promise, the guarantee.
Mr. Lucas' collection, which I've said here (over and over again) cannot contain Star Wars items because Disney has a lock on them... Mr. Lucas' collection of stuff contains comic books, digital media (read cartoons, early attempts at digital animation and special effects) and Norman Rockwell and other middle of the road art.
He wants a tax dodge (donating his lifetime collection of unrelated 'stuff') and he wants a temple to himself. Period.
At least the Presidio was smart enough to turn him away. Now, maybe he can become Waukegan's problem.
You know, if you have a problem with EVERYONE, it's likely YOU are, in fact, the problem. Mr. Lucas and Mellody don't seem to have the ability to play well with others. They want what they want, the way they want it and if they don't get it, they take their ball and go home. And thank God for that.
Here, read it. http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/How-George-Lucas-bid-for-a-Presidio-museum-6232165.php

Disney can't build a year round theme park in the Snow Belt unless it gets built underground. People just are not going to wait an hour and a half for the Magic Tea Cup or Dumbo the Elephant rides when it is 30 degrees. So the G.L. Museum could put Disney in the midwest in a big way.

The Museum is also a film school.

The most interesting part is the funding.
$1.2 billion from the State of Illinois?
$1.2 billion from the taxpayers of Illinois?

The plan requires $1.2 billion in new borrowing, which would be paid off by the $743 million the Lucas museum set aside for construction on the original site and a complex tax plan, including hotel-tax revenue, that is currently being used to pay off debt on U.S. Cellular Field, where the White Sox play.

When the debt on the stadium is paid off in two decades, the revenue will begin to pay off the debt on the museum.

So, twenty more years before the Cell is paid off and before that money can then be used to pay off the Lucas museum? WTF???

And you're correct SCC. Quite of bit of this art that Lucas wants to display has to do with Star Wars, Toy Story, etc. If Lucas is a private owner of some of this, I'll bet Disney has some say in how and when it is displayed.

A couple thoughts from me.

The whole thing smells like a vanity project for George Lucas. I suppose it went up on bids and your buddy Rahm offered the most.

The name is bad. With the franchise sold the name Lucas will in time not be associated with the Star Wars logo even if sequels keep the logo in the public eye. And if the franchise stops selling movies, the whole thing will be obsolete in a few years.

You do not make money on this stuff with entrance fees, the big money is in drawing in tourists. The museum sitting off by itself will not be enough of a draw to bring in tourists. It might make sense in one of the entertainment centers like near a Disney Company park or movie production area because it would be part of the general draw of the region. But in Chicago? Clearly misplaced.

And it is for minority children? Give me a break!

‘Star Wars’ Museum: Rahm Emanuel Got Campaign Cash From Disney, George Lucas’ Wife, Before Pushing to Donate City Land

11/20/14

"You might call it the Dark Side of politics, but in Chicago, is there any other side? Windy City preservationists are suing to block the construction of a so-called “Star Wars” museum after Mayor Rahm Emanuel offered to let George Lucas build the $400 million project on publicly owned lakefront land. The mayor has defended the proposal to lease the prime real estate to the billionaire Lucas for just $1 a year, insisting the project is on “solid legal ground,” the Sun Times reported.

"What he hasn’t mentioned is the almost $50,000 worth of campaign donations he has received from those with vested interests in the project..."

When it comes to fully funding police pensions he cries like the little ballerina she is,but daddy lucas tells her about the billions in taxpayers money he wants then wow he's all in! The easy question is how much does rahm & fellow thieves pocket?

On another note why is it when a clouted boss fireside takes his "ugly girl betty" from ambulance company to a blackhawks game Otis crashes cfd vehicle and just walks away huge pension. this moron is the guy that went and told firemen "all accidents are preventable!" does that mean even when your drunk? Look how quickly ir died in media, guess rahms crew made the call, while everyday they beat on lowly cpd coppers, and eddie is reopening how many cases on coppers again? Stick that video camera where the sun does not shine hypocrite, hows your girlfriend and the others that cheated on Lt test? Demoted yet eddie? Feds called from across the hall sir?

Your forgetting the connected contractors who will reap huge profits tearing down the old exhibit hall and building a new one just west of the lake. And then of course building the new Lucas Museum. In turn the connected contractors will "contribute" money to the same conniving Democrat politicians who are pushing this scam. The same cycle of corruption that has been going on in Chicago for decades.

I assumed...just like lots of other folks...that the Lucas Museum would have lots of cool Star Wars/Lucasfilm stuff. I forgot that Disney owns the Star Wars universe. So I'm not sure how an art museum that just has Lucas' name can possibly sustain itself. Why have it here? How many long-term jobs will be there? Will any children (not matter their color) actually enjoy any more than the big art museum with the fancy lions in front of it? Build it in California.

Off Topic but think about it...

A few day ago there was a posting and video about the '68 Democratic Convention and how he Thin Blue Line held with good cops and good bosses. No apologies ever needed they kept democracy (note small "d") from being overrun by rioters.

Now can you imagine the absolute shit hurricane the is likely in Cleveland with the Republican National Convention and Donald Trump. George Soros and others have probably booked rooms and hired busses for people who will tear that town apart. It will make the '68 Convention look like an ice cream social.

Stay Safe. God Bless the Cleveland P.D.

I love it when the good priest holds his anti-gun rallies. He surrounds himself with family members of gun victims all wearing T shirts with the photos of gun victims ( mostly gang members) and they chant and light candles and pray etc etc etc. Then they call for closing gun shops and more gun laws. But this , and they know it, only effects the legal gun owners. The real problem and the progressives do not want to say it or deal with it are the c riminals living in their own communities who are doing the killing. Most criminologists will tell you that these criminals really constitute a small percentage of the population, less then 10%. Lock these fools up for years far from home in federal prisons. That will curtail the violence rate. But, this narrative would disappoint the progressives and folks like Preckwinkle by putting a few more black and brown people in jail. They simply do not want to face the problem and admit that it is personal responsibility and actions, not the result of the police, or the white man or any other reason they can conjure up. Decent people need safety in their communities

Well doesn't that beat all? Looks like lil' Miss Ariel investments got busted out. Taxpayers on the hook for a museum of narrative art, and they get a tax break. Is it really because George "wants it built while he's alive" or is capital gains on Disney running out?

Go back to California. They all think like assholes out there.

Did 360 tell some officers "I'm the lieutenant, I can do whatever I want" ???

Heard some officers were being targeted by one of the tact sgts. Then when LT got the word he ignored the real issues. Immediately after, the officers were kicked to the curb.

If true...

How do you think places like the Art Institute populates their walls? Lifetime gifts from the wealthy. Have you ever been to the Art Institute, one of the greatest art museums in the world? We wouldn't need lakefront property either. The West side or the South side would do fine. We'd find a place.

Now THAT would be a Museum many would want to go to. We could even accommodate Father Phleger with a wing honoring the church, "Do you believe in Jesus?"

There's a whole bunch of people working VRI that are house mice.

These people have time on the job and meet their VRI quotas working details etc.

Pay no mind to them. Most are not the real street police and if it weren't for VRI you'd never see or hear from them. (house mice only)

It is easy to explain why Northerly island is falling apart. The peninsula you call Northerly Island is a pile of rocks. The airfield held it together. An airfield was the best use for the land. With the runway being destroyed, and then spending large sums of money to create an artificial park, cracks developed. These cracks were filled with roots which expanded or with water to widen the cracks. Nature has had a decade to do this. I am surprised it it still here.
I had an argument with the Friends of Miegs Field. They wanted a part with the new airfield. I pointed out the dangers and the large maintenance costs. They wanted this plan because they felt they could work with Daley on this. They hated my suggestion. That was to have Daley arrested for the many crimes he committed that night, and work with the new mayor.
I never understood why anyone liked Daley.
