Rumor Comes True
- The Chicago Police Department’s second-in-command and the department's chief of internal affairs have applied for the top police job at Northeastern Illinois University, a university spokesman said Wednesday.
First Deputy Superintendent John Escalante was named interim Chicago police superintendent when Garry McCarthy stepped down from the post last year in the wake of the release of the video of Laquan McDonald’s killing. Escalante was passed over for the permanent job for another department veteran, Eddie Johnson, but Escalante remained in the department in the first deputy job. Chief of Internal Affairs Eddie Welch III heads the police bureau responsible for internal investigations of allegations of misconduct against police officers.
