The message is getting lost because the FOP is following the Obama-model of "leading from behind:"

This isn't about the police not working Labor Day. This is about police not working voluntary overtime that masks police shortages that Rahm has engineered, leaving the Department dangerously shorthand - over 2,000 officers worth.
But that's not the message the "community" and the media are presenting. Instead, we get this (unintentionally) humorous take on things:

This is a good thing that communities are finally starting to try and clean up their act and protect their community and families. Isn't that what we have been asking for?
I agree, until what we do as po s is respected and appreciated why do anything at all? I was always willing to accept the risk of the job, but only when I believed that my sacrifice was appreciated by the people I served.

By turning down the overtime, it means that you are working one less tour of duty. Less opportunity for something to go wrong and you get jammed up and stripped.

This is due to years of officers continuously working initiatives that don't pay into our pension. It's to the point where the citizens expect us to work these VOLUNTARY assignments. Twenty years ago a old timer told the reason not to work CTA was because many officers wanted it to be at time and a half and pensionable. Two weeks ago I posted on this blog how the cars that were working the 1730 start in 025 were getting early ducks of 2 hours on most nights. Sometimes even 3 hours. Also how a favored few officers were getting early ducks. In the mean time those of us in 1st watch get screwed. As long as I have been on 1st watch, our watch gets screwed. Well because of your insignificant blog-- no more early ducks for the 3rd watch 1730 cars and everyone gets treated the same. You see, if everyone got the same shake, this would never had been an issue. But when some white shirts decide to favor one start time and a few officers on the other start times with generous early ducks then that is wrong. Just plain wrong. A big shout out to our Unit Rep in 002 for letting the youngsters know that they can't be fired for Labor Day and Bud Billiken for simply excercising a contractual benefit. Our solidarity over a couple weekends will determine the terms of our next contract. The City is initially pushing for a PAY CUT and minimal hiring, let's show them how we feel.

Yesterday, it was constant, and I only listened for an hour. I'm a retired surburban dispatcher, and take my hat off to your girls running those radios. Granted I got pretty damn busy when I worked, but nothing like the city, and never ran out of cars like you do, but when you're several thousand officers short, it's a miracle things go as smoothly as they do. Thank you every day for the jobs you do, even though it means taking time away from your loved ones, and missing important dates. Not many people understand and appreciate what you sacrifice every day, some of do.

At Damen and Chicago while having lunch at the Subway, I saw four guys in with a duty belt, a gun, handcuffs, baton, etc. Just like what we have. They had a vest and it said "Officer" on the back. It looked so damn official. At first I thought they were Cook County guys. Then I see on their shoulder it said "Central Investigative Services". I then asked who they were and the guy just said we are officers. I asked officers as in police officers? Then he gives me a hard look and an attitude. They don't do these things for free, somebody has to get paid for their 'charity' work.

The black community has been correctly criticized for not taking an active enough role in working to eliminate problems in their community, while at the same time pointing fingers at others and objecting to the police presence and methods. Said differently, the problems of the black community will never be solved until black community itself decides that it has had enough and wants to DO something about the problem instead of TALK about it.
Fine. So let the police pull back. And lets let the black community see what they can do to solve their own problems. Maybe this might lead to the day we can pull the police out of the black community altogether (they dont want us there anyway), and re-deploy the police to areas that actually pay for the police and appreciate and respect their presence.

Sorry to report that multiple sources have confirmed that the 12th District NOW HAS JUST 285 OFFICERS!! A total of 44 officers retired, transferred of were promoted in July.
This is NINE FEWER OFFICERS THAN WERE IN THE OLD 12 before it merged with 13 in December 2012! Think about it...285 officers are covering twice as much territory as did 294!
As frustrated as we all are with the recent uptick in shootings and shots fired, robberies and car jackings, the fact is there simply are not enough officers to cover one of the largest districts in the city. Compounding the manpower issue is the fact that we share a district with a neighborhood with much worse gang problems, pulling officers that might be up here, to that area.

Thanks to the 007 idiots who just took a gun and inventoried it under a different RD# after plenty of good solid police work. Way to go you idiots! Wow you got a credit for a gun. I knew plenty of great coppers in 007. Hell some are still there. But these idiots just proved that not all coppers in a working district is a worker or even have the slightest common sense. Hope I get to meet these jag offs in court so we can all watch them explain to the ASA and def attorney what the fugck up was about.

From the outside looking in it does not appear to me that the union has a whole lot of leverage with the city. Even if you are several thousand officers short of some arbitrary number it probably doesn't make all that much difference because there just is no more money. The population is dropping in Chicago taxes are going up and the economy is going down the tubes. That means the city has to find some way to economize. The massive tax increases that is going to take just to fund the various City pension plans means there isn't going to be a whole lot of money for anything else including more cops.
So far the city has managed the situation pretty well, at least as well as anyone probably could in the same situation. My guess is the plan is to shrink the number of city employees in all departments as much as possible via normal attrition. It's really the only place they have where they can cut the budget or at least have some control over it if it can't be cut.

Two weeks ago I posted on this blog how the cars that were working the 1730 start in 025 were getting early ducks of 2 hours on most nights. Sometimes even 3 hours. Also how a favored few officers were getting early ducks. In the mean time those of us in 1st watch get screwed. As long as I have been on 1st watch, our watch gets screwed. Well because of your insignificant blog-- no more early ducks for the 3rd watch 1730 cars and everyone gets treated the same. You see, if everyone got the same shake, this would never had been an issue. But when some white shirts decide to favor one start time and a few officers on the other start times with generous early ducks then that is wrong. Just plain wrong. If you want to blame someone, then do not blame me. But blame the greedy jerks who refused to spread the wealth around.

Think about it. 11, 000 Chicago cops work one year. They shoot and kill 22 people ( a very high number). That means a cop would be expected to work 500 years to see one killing. Chicago police don't kill 22 people a year. The actual number is close to one per thousanf years of man hours. Does that sound like brutality?
