This is Brilliant!

This is exactly why we will never be a boss on this job - we can't think at this level:
  • On 1st watch in 19 we down on avg 4 beat cars per night. Why yo may ask?????? To put up 2 cars to drive up and down LSD from Lawrenve to Fullerton all night with their lights activated for visibility and deterrence . 2 Frikin two man cars to do absolutely nothing but that. Who comes up with this bullshit. If the Commander and Captain had any balls whatsoever they'd tell downtown how stupid this is, but they don't . They're too worried about getting that next jump up the ladder
Two cars, burning city gas, running up and down Lake Shore Drive with lights activated....and there is NO emergency situation.

That. Is. Awesome! We never, in a million years, would have thought of something like this. We guess we just don't have what it takes....thank god.

The liability factor alone has got to be monstrous, but that isn't stopping anyone. In fact, we have an e-mail that says 020 is doing the EXACT SAME THING! Their reasoning is that the blue lights will scare away the ne'er-do-wells from the south and west sides who have driven north side shooting, homicide and general crime to levels unseen in years, decades even. If it's true, we have some bad news for the brains at 35th Street - it ain't working.

Can anyone tell us if this is an entire lake front initiative? Maybe someone from the media would like to follow the blue lights for a night or two, then ask Special Ed why cars are rushing from one end of the drive to another with no call and no destination?

Everyone speeds on Lake Shore Drive. Is this supposed to slowdown traffic?

I do NOT see the value of this. With police resources being stretched as thin as they are, there has to be some higher priority "values"/ targets for these resources to be applied.

You don't need sworn personnel to drive cars either. Hire some minimum-wage "people" at a higher wage - $11-$14 an hour and tell them just drive this car back and forth on LSD and we'll put lights on it so you can drive fast in traffic. You would get a TON of applicants.

HEY, now THAT it some good job-creation!!! AND A LOT CHEAPER for someone to just "drive-around". Apply the real cops to real work.

Volunteers from 3rd watch get OT every Fri, Sat and Sun till 2 am. All to save an eventual suspended case. In fact it should be called a "Suspended Case Mission!"

Dumb shit like this is how we ended up with blue lights in the first place. Way back when the CPD had very few actual cars, someone had the bright idea to drive around with the lights on to keep people aware for traffic safety. Most of us can guess what happened, the public became desensitized to the lights and did not respond to the lights as emergency warning. This wasn't the only reason the blue lights came along, but it is one of the reasons.

SCC - one additional danger. The good citizen who actually tries to take evasive action in order to get out of the way and then has an accident. The shyster finds out there was no justification for the Mars lights. Lawsuit time.
Instead of removing air horns - how about having the light bars modified to have steady burning lights at either end of the light bar. Like running lights on a boat. Some jurisdictions use them as a high visibility tactic but reserving the full bar flashing for real emergencies. Other agencies use the steady burn mode when there are several cars on scene and might be administering a field sobriety test so the flashing lights will not interfere with the video cam or disorient the subject. The first time i saw the use of constant lights was in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the tourist area about 20 years ago.
Remember when ISP had mannequins in marked squads along the tollway? Yet another administrative solution for a staffing shortage.
Hiring more patrolmen would be a more suitable solution.

Old Retired Guy Here. To my understanding, this site's original mission, was to provide information, and light sarcastic humor. Over the years, it has been very successful in that mission. I enjoy this site, and visit it often. Now, more than ever it provides, one of my only refuges from the illogical, insanity, of our current situation. On that note, I feel, even this site, does not fully appreciate, "HOW BAD,THINGS REALLY ARE". From what I can see, forget about any boss, or politician, "BACKING YOU UP". That concept,is as obsolete, as I am. Truth is, they are more confused, and scared, than we are. You think, they are not victims, of this same madness? Driving up and down LSD, with your lights on, is the modern day version, of sticking your head out the window, and shouting "I'm as Mad as Hell, and I'm Not Going To Take This Anymore"! They do something like this in Aurora. They have a retired commercial armored car decked out in APD black and white, badges, overhead lights and Neighbor Hood Response Vehicle painted on both sides. It was parked at Lincoln and North Avenue over the weekend to show people and folks the police are there. Word on the street is nothing works on it and they have to tow it there. This is an example of modern police management that is similar to driving around with the overheads on I suppose.

DC started doing this with the lights under Ramsey 10+ years ago, and not just on one street. This is your brain trust.

Its obviously due to what Hey Jackass was reporting months ago. More than two dozen shot on Lake Shore Drive since December or so, and almost all of them downtown or north. That's a huge problem for people who think Lolla, Lincoln Park, Downtown, Lakeview etc are still safe.

And just last night one shot at Racine and Belmont.

Having emergency lights activated is standard practice in Mexico's tourist areas. They do this outside of the airport in lima, Peru as well. Thieves were targeting cars stuck in traffic in a dangerous area called callao. The police will sit out on the main street with the lights flashing and it actually has improved the safety and lowered robberies because they make their presence known. I actually like this idea. It gives chicago this 3rd world feel.

Lights on has been in effect for more than 25 years in the other city departments.take a look around and see all those city vehicles trucks and equipment driving around all day and night with the yellow mars and strobe lights on the rule also said you must always have your safety vest on while inside the vehicle if you got caught not doing so they said you would get a 3 day suspension usually about 2 or 3 times a day motorist would tell you when stopped at a stop light your lights were on like you made a mistake and forgot to turn them off I would smile and say thank you I didn't think driving with the strobe lights on at all times was a good idea but it really didn't make that much of a difference to me .it was just another order to follow.but what I really wished is for more common sense applied to these orders I thought some orders were good and some were bad .I didn't think this was a good idea if it's true that police are driving around with the blue lights on at all times in my opinion is a worse idea this order should be stopped immediately .blue lights are for emergencies yellow lights are for caution .

Washington DC Metro PD do the same thing. They drive around the Mall with their lights flashing 24/7 as a means to be more "visible" I guess. Not sure if it has any impact on the crime rate, but I doubt it.

Nothing new............couple months back we had a outdoor roll call with community organizers and the smartest gold star after roll call gives an order "want yaa all get in carz and turn lights and sirens on then drive in this designed box for an hour". We gonna call it "disrupt the neighborhood mission"......I was ashamed to be the police that day.

Isn't this a violation of traffic laws? Are these units stopping at red lights or blowing them? Operating within the speed limits? Aren't the officers subject to an abuse of power lawsuit for using their mars lights forcing citizens to pull over or stop possibly endangering citizens without justification? Time for a law suit against the district commander that issued the order, including fast Eddie and Rahmbo. Enough of this stupid crap, we don't have enough officers as it is.

Tha would free-up officers to provide more personal service by wearing light-up sandwich boards, and marching up and down Michigan Avenue.

8/02/2016 12:40:00

Thanks 12:40 I am not the only one who remembers that.
I am over 70 and remember back in the early 60's or late 50's (pre OW , they brought him in to straighten things out and he didn't know jamal green...) A call would go out on the old AM police channel (1560kc ??) All cars were ordered to activate their red lights for the duration of...... ( new years etc)....

And that is why we have blue lights now...... Next will be green or something... whatever. If the police are still around.

How about the new stupid idea coming from the XO or Area North. He has started "Crush Missions" where the whole Saturation team meets at an area and with him leading the clown parade, they all drive around the parameter of a "box" or "zone" (or whatever they are calling them today) Lights and Sirens blaring until the go around 2 or 3 times. Then on his command they dive into the box and stop anything that's moving.
Back in TRU they had Getm missions and those were stopped because the name sounded "too much like an invading force" but a "Crush Mission" doesn't? How about the good residence living in the "box" watching the clown show circle them like piranhas waiting to pounce.
More stupid missions by bosses looking for promotions that were never the police. Bay, the former traffic guy from 014 and Frank "the rat" Radke kiss-ass.

The fucking liberal media is eating this shit up and have you noticed that even then pictures are shown of black offenders on the news they never mention race, why is that?

Why isn't the union addressing the Cancelllation of retiree healthcare> where the hell are they? Why are they silent?

They other night, we were told in roll call that once we put in a personal day we cannot change it to time due. But it's the desk personnel on 1st watch that are doing shady shit like that. There is no way to quantify this tactic for effectiveness. I have seen this before, many years ago. On a holiday weekend, a directive came down that all marked cars will operate all weekend with emergency lights on. It sure as hell confused the public. They were pulling to the right on every street and looking at you as you cruised by with a stupid look on your face and no hurry to go anywhere. What is old is new again. The brass are getting desperate. Rahm will have to make some decisions at the end of the year when he is faced with the public fallout for one of the most violent years in decades.

"You don't need sworn personnel to drive cars either.

Apply the real cops to real work"

This is ridiculous and it only exasperates the basic problem of low manpower and how it is being hidden from the public. The Democommunists are stealing the funds for the police to put to their own ends and the public and the department be damned. Our union leadership has been bought off.

We forget that we are still citizens and have a voice and can do something about it.

Citizens should call their aldermen and complain about this LSD merry-go-round. If you live, work or have a business in any of these districts all and raise hell about it. No matter if you are police or a citizen call.

Get this on video, with a private dash cam video and follow those cars around.
Turn the video over to TV News.

Join the parade, got a motorcycle club or classic car club follow those cars. Just make a video of it and get it on the news.

If enough noise is made, especially if lives are lost because police are doing stupid shit lie this, then someone with a gold star may get call on the carpet in the Superintendent's office in the morning.

That afternoon someone else will have that gold star.

Register and VOTE!

Given how many accidents that occurr involving emergency vehicles that were responding to REAL emergencies, this idea is just cataclysmically stupid.

Not to put salt in the wounds or anything, but going strictly by curb weight/GVW, coppers and FD Chiefs come out at the bottom of the food chain. This has nothing (or very little) to do with politics but everything to do with physics.

Ford CVPI curb weight is a little over 4000 lbs. Add two officers, radio rack, prisoner partition, pushbar, lightbar, plus whatever gear is stashed in the trunk, you might be pushing close to 47-4800 lbs down the street.

Ford Police SUV curb weight is a little over 4600. Add two coppers and the average gadgets and gizmos and GVW is pushing 53-5400 lbs.

For an average FD, Chiefs cars and SUVs are pretty close to their PD counterparts; these are the "babies" of the FD fleet.

A modern ambulance built on a F-550 frame has a max GVW of 19,500. These are the pre-puberty "tween-age girls" of any FDs fleet.

The big red full grown brothers START with a DRY curb weight of over 40,000 lbs- that's just an average engine. No tank water, no hose, no personnel or any other goodies. Even just adding the tank water (1000 gallons @ 8.3 lbs per gallon) puts a occupied squad car or SUV at a 10:1 weight disadvantage in the event of a collision. These are the 'roided out NFL linebackers; even a relatively low speed impact is gonna hurt you plenty.

The law of squares applies (roughly). If the speed for a given GVW is doubled, the impact hits with about FOUR times the force. Same speed with double the GVW will also have close to 4 times the impact.

Not if, but when . . . and when it does happen, there will a Katrina sized shit-storm.
Penny wise, dollar foolish. The city is playing Russian roulette with a cocked and locked 1911. The stats are out there.

To be continued . . .

. . . Continued . . .

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a report in April of 2014 that provides an overview of the number of ambulance accidents in the United States. The agency studied the number of ambulance accidents over a 20 year period from 1992-2011.

Below are some of the key findings from the report:

Over the 20 year period, 35% of accidents resulted in injury or fatality to at least 1 occupant of a vehicle involved.

An average of 29 fatal ambulance accidents produced 33 fatalities each year.

On average, 2,600 people are injured in 1,500 ambulance accidents each year.

Of those killed in an ambulance accident, 63% were occupants of a passenger vehicle, 21% were passengers in the ambulance, 4% were the ambulance driver, and 12% were non-occupants.
Nearly 60% of ambulance accidents occur during the course of emergency use.

Firetruck Accidents in the U.S.

According to data from the NHTSA and the United States Fire Administration (USFA), firetruck accidents are the second leading cause of on-the-job deaths for firefighters.

Below are some key findings from an analysis of NHTSA data on firetruck accidents from 2000-2009:

Over that 10 year period, there were roughly 31,600 accidents involving fire vehicles.
49 of those accidents resulted in at least one fatality to an occupant of the firetruck.
About 70% of all firetruck accidents occurred while in emergency use.

Rollovers account for 66% of all fatal firetruck accidents.

As seen in the statistics, firetruck accidents can be very serious, often resulting in serious injuries or even fatalities. Since firetrucks, like emergency ambulances, are frequently responding to emergency situations, most of the accidents occurred in such settings.

Police Car Accidents in the U.S.

Using data from 1994-2002, researchers from the University of Washington performed an analysis of the number of fatalities each year that occur during police pursuits.

Below are some of their key findings:

Each year there are approximately 300 fatalities in the U.S. that occur during police pursuits.

Just over 30% of the fatalities occurred to people who were not involved in the pursuit.

The odds don't look too good . . .

Listen to the man. Unless you have prepared yourself for retirement, such as substantial deferred comp or a second career, or are planning a move to a cheaper state, hang around for a bit. The civilian community does not care much for retired police officers and they will give you no special treatment. 12 buck an hour is about it, maybe a few more with some security firm, but you will not like working for security firms. They are all about customer relations, not security and you end up working for some real ass hats who would not know a crime if it happened in front of them.

ISP has the same orders from the top brass,"to activate emergency lights for 5 mins on every hour of you shift within your assigned patrol" - to show the general public we are visible and in an attempt to deter gun violence on the expressways. No one is actually doing this as command wants troops to sit in their squads stationary like targets creating a huge officer safety issue.
