Word coming in from 016 that on First Watch for Saturday, 31 July, there were a grand total of five cars answering calls.
And when the early cars checked off, there were exactly two.
Our e-mailer writes that while this was happening on 016, there were 40 cars assigned to 015. We have no idea if this is beat cars, rapids, wagons, tact teams along with the VRI zone cars, Saturation and Summer Mobile, but seriously? Two cars? In one of the larger Districts in the city?
Leaving aside the crime issue, what about as a safety issue? Who the hell is running this shit show? Has anyone called the aldercreatures?

Let them know the facts, and remind them CCW is now legal in Chicago.

Last Saturday when days took over there were six 1a jobs waiting with a few hours on each.
Same thing happens in 014 on 1st watch frequently.
Who is going to file that lawsuit against the City for neglecting to providing proper police coverage. Sue the city for the damages when someone gets hurts

Similar problems in 017, 8 cars a night, sometimes 7. I can't remember the last time we had a wagon up, let alone a traffic car. Usually missing at least one beat car plus the wagon per night.
If you are in 016 and you are a sgt or p.o. on the street, you realize the inside bosses don't care about you at all. You run from one side of the district to the other to help your fellow officer. Your safety is not important to anyone other than your family and the other officers who back you up. Then you realize your only choice is to finally retire and if you live in 016, the next step is to move the hell out of there.
The city workers in the 11th, 19th and 43rd wards are the reason that we'll never get rid of residency.

006 1st watch isnt much better. Sometimes they fill every beat car. Theres rarely a rapid or traffic unit and if there is its on tuesday night. Every weekend theres a backlog until 0600 hrs. If theres a shooting forget about it.

In 009 Tact cars are told to answer as up as different Beat Cars when the watch can't fill them or have given to many people time off. Bosses get on the radio and tell the dispatch that the certain tact car will be given and calls on a certain beat. (Domestic, parkers, and any paper jobs.). It's going to get worse before it gets better

The city is not keeping there end of the deal, still no pension contribution from my property tax increase which was the reason for the increase, cps is a total disaster, paying for private school, crime is every where no police at all because there all south and west. Ive grown up here my whole life ,but i cant stand to see my kids get cheating out of a normal childhood. Cities like pittsburg and Milwaukee faught and beat residency who had the same home rule clause we do ,making us the last major city with such a strict residency requirement. This is not the same city i grew up in and agreed to live in when i signed up for the job.
Midnights suck big time no matter what district you're working. The D units are just short. That whole furlough by watch time didn't seem to help, so it has to be overall manpower shortages. Disporportionate staffing for ghetto reasons should not be acceptable.
Our tax dollars are increasing and our services decreasing.

Cut the Duty Avail entirely for all INSIDE administrative house mice to make Midnights more desirable for real police.
It may get more folks outdoors and on a Beat instead of a yearly diet of weekends & holidays off.
I hated midnights and that was a long time ago. Even Rotating was better.
016 is having a lot of thefts and burglaries recently too...shitheads know there are no police patrolling. Garages broken into. People just deal with it--they know calling 911 will entail an hour + wait...or worse, they're told to call 311 and make a report. All the police are in the ghetto districts. Seems fair.
An option for sworn members in all the districts with a shortage of manpower. Consider putting up an advertising billboard exposing the shortage therefore bringing shame on the corresponding Commander and the Mayor.

What leverage does a boss have on a veteran with close to 20 yrs on? Your car? Your start time?
But get a bunch of guys on a team or at an area, they're young and gullible, and easily bullied and pressured because GASP! OH HORROR OF HORRORS! they don't want to go back to the watch to push a beat car on midnights. So they continue to sell their souls and stick their necks out for petty favors, not realizing what they gain is not worth what they can potentially lose when working for these faithless coward bosses who will throw you under the bus and turn their backs on you under the slightest pressure.
Then you got the inside people and CAPS people who have to be taken care of no matter how low the manpower on the watch is.
The management of the City and Department can all go choke on their own lies and bile, for what they are doing to the coppers and tax payers of the few remaining decent areas of this city.
Us guys who have been pushing beat cars our whole careers, we aren't stooges or pasties or dogs for that matter, and we're not interested in making "more with less" work at the expense of our safety and mental and physical health. We signed up to serve but not to be sacrificed.

I like your attitude, but your intention is misdirected. You advocate for something that cannot be done. The only place to take this argument is to the elected officials and put so much heat on them they can't stand it. On one hand the black alderman call for more and more cops in their neighborhoods to kip a lid on the out of control violence and other bad behavior. Then the progressives complain that the black areas are " over -policed" and way too many cops around. Then ACLU does not want the police to make traffic or street stops in minority neighborhoods, then the people complain that the cops are not doing their jobs, then the mayor refused to back the police or to hire the number needed to quell the violence, then the new police superintendent is afraid of being on the hot seat so he prejudges every police action and has coffee and tea with anti police activists ( and gives them his cell phone #). How in the hell can you win up against this? But, these type of law suits go no where and would be tossed out of court. Sorry !!
Look at the average property tax bill in black neighborhoods and then compare it to the average tax bill in white areas. Wow! A great difference.

To put up 2 cars to drive up and down LSD from Lawrenve to Fullerton all night with their lights activated for visibility and deterrence . 2 Frikin two man cars to do absolutely nothing but that. Who comes up with this bullshit. If the Commander and Captain had any balls whatsoever they'd tell downtown how stupid this is, but they don't . They're too worried about getting that next jump up the ladder.

Point of Interest, in the area around 016, Norridge and Harwood Heights usually have more cars running than the entire 16th District.

Well at least the bike patrol unit got 16 new bodies 10 of them with less than 5yrs on -5 of them that didn't take the bike training class yet- and 2 of them with less than 3 yrs on, already on IOD before they even arrived and with all the BLM protests downtown that the bike unit does you think they would select at least 1 black officer to bring down out of the 15 they selected

There are plenty of tactical teams working . We are the only ones making stops and are not worried about getting stripped . Our Lt. assured us that he has or back even if downtown doesn't. Ranger and proud to be Non fetal . So don't complain beat offc . Just doing the job .
In 015 way back in the1984-85 era, we were on the first watch. We had an awesome WC. This was during the hot summer. A lot of P.O.s requested Saturday night Sunday morning off. This WC granted the td slips if the P.O.s still working agreed to step up. We did. The midnight watch consisted of 2 wagons, 3 two man cars and two 1 man cars.we pulled it off. The bosses and P.O.s worked together for the good of the watch. I was and still am proud to be one of the P.O.s who worked that shift. Those who read this and were a part of this understand!

I went to my Alderman's office to complain they were sending our first watch patrol to the west side they said that was not true, I just love that that was there first response even though they obviously knew nothing about it. I told them it has been going on for months and that I had spoken to the officers personally( I was living in 017 working in 015} I did not say I was an officer.
They said they would make some calls. When I went back they said I was right and they were demanding that it stop. It did to some extent for a couple months then went back to business as usual. I complained again and they told me they can't control the police department,I laughed and said you did when I came in before why can't you just do it again. I took the trouble to come in you can't be bothered to pick up a phone. They called me a few days later and said the deployment was within the rules since the officers reported to their unit of assignment and also ended their tour there. I countered that that was a weak response since alderman can damn near get whatever they want and it seemed to me they were either lazy or in someone's pocket.
I related this situation to as many neighbors as I could and asked them to pass it on. The alderman for the first time ever barley won, maybe next time. Sick of these fucked up entitled assholes catering to a bunch of bottom feeder felons who can't even vote. Stay frosty.

The superintendent promised the community more police officers. He said there would be a hybrid mixture of new and veteran officers. So all he gives is six ppo's? The district needs at a minimum 40 officers sent there.

According to you, there is not crime in the 16th district? That having 2 beat cars is enough for 32 square miles? How many cars are enough? Do you have any idea how long it takes to respond to a call if a car is at say central and foster and receives a call at Cicero and Belmont? Or Harlem and Belmont? The only assistance a car in 16th receive is from the surrounding suburbs, County police, state police and forest preserve police. Stick your "to be fair". They could put 60 cars in 15th and still not control crime. Imagine calling for a fight on the street, a battery in progress, even a bad traffic crash, no one to respond or wait 30-60 minutes?

If the victims want someone arrested, they shouldn't let themselves be talked out of signing complaints. Maybe "complaining" about the 8 mile drive was actually "explaining" a slow response time. Are POs not allowed to discuss where they want to have lunch? Talking about lunch doesn't mean you're on your way to lunch. If my family member was the victim of a crime, yes, the offender would be arrested on signed complaints, because my family members would sign the complaints no matter who tries to talk them out of it. Do you have any other bitching and moaning to do about absolutely nothing, or can we worry about real problems now? You don't get to demand a car when you call 911, and you don't get to demand a supervisor. You can request a car and request a supervisor. If you request a supervisor because you didn't get a car fast enough for your low priority, nonsense job, you're not getting one, at least not if the supervisors working in that district have any sense. 016 had 5 beat cars, wagon, and 2 Sgt. riding with POs for a total of 14.
007 is 7.25sq miles vs. 016's 35sq miles. So 016 is 5 times the size of 007.
How many VRI cars were in 007 that night?
Lets compare taxes paid by residents of both districts.

Alderman John Arena's response on Jefferson Park Forward post on FB when someone questioned this:
John Arena According to the commander and Superintendant we have at least one car per precinct on all shifts. And, 6 new officers were just assigned to each of the the 16th and 17th Dist. Crime is down overall. We get runs on garage break ins and property crime. What we don't hear about is the impressive arrest rates. You have to look at the whole picture.
