- A Chicago man, fed up and frustrated with what he says is the rising crime in his neighborhood, takes matters into his own pocketbook — shelling out thousands to pay for private street security.
[...] Security firm owner Howard Greer, also a Chicago cop, patrols the 1100 block of North LaSalle. It’s his off-duty job, paid for by this De Mudd.
“I’ve been watching my neighborhood deteriorate over the last couple of years,” Mudd says.
Police, he says, couldn’t keep up. So, Greer and fellow off-duty officers now walk the Gold Coast pocket with guns and handcuffs — six days a week, eight hours a day.
Maybe other blocks can have bake sales and chocolate bar fundraisers to pay for extra cops?

It the city won't provide police protection, than the locals will provide it, or pay for it, themselves. It's the American way.

Sounds like a good idea but my 70-acre estate is more than a city block.
My compound has its own security as well but I wouldn't tell you what it all is SCC because that would compromise it.

If this the answer? Pay through the nose in taxes, fees, assessments, tickets and summoses, only to have to pay more to keep your family and neighbors safe? How much is enough?
De Mudd should be investing that $50,000 in finding a better city.

I understand their frustration. However this shit is messed up. Same story in China Town, they formed a neighborhood watch that has a Kung Fu Master with them. If government can't provide basic protection who would want to be here. To all these good people trying to protect their property and neighbors you are taking on a lot of liability. Good simeritens are risking their lives and are take a chance on getting hurt. I could go on with this but everyone gets the idea. If no one feels safe it will only get worse. Good people moving.

What happens when these off duty coppers make an arrest? I assume THEY are doing the ALL paper along with the TRRs and everything else. If they get hurt, are they now IOD? Are they still indemnified by the city? When they get sued is it the city that will pay out? After they make an arrest are they back on the city payroll? Are they now collecting pay from the city and the private employer, double dipping? I see nothing but problems coming out of this. But since an aldercreature likes it, everything is okay!
When you see things like this happening, it really is an indicator that this City is just completely going to shit.

If you are an off duty officer working for these security gigs then you are a fool. You have more to lose than to gain. They pay anywhere from $16 per hour on the low end to $25 per hour on the high end. Most pay a straight check and you have to pay your own taxes so minus about 12% to 15% of the above figures.
Then the liability; if you get hurt no iod, if you take police action and the bad guy knows you are the police you may get more than you bargained for. It is not worth it.
If after your salary plus vri plus cta you still can't make ends meet there is something wrong with your finances.
Off duty coppers used to patrol in the 8th District on 834's beat awile back. It was called the Night Owls.

The night before, Aug. 14, a Chicago police officer’s son had been killed in a shooting while sitting on his family’s porch, one of 92 people killed in Chicago during the worst month for homicides in the Windy City since July 1993. The August victims who survived included 10-year-old Tavon Tanner, shot while playing in front of his house (the bullet ripped through Tavon’s pancreas, intestines, kidney and spleen); an 8-year-old girl shot in the arm while crossing the street; and two 6-year-old girls.
On Sept. 6, a 71-year-old man was accosted by a teen on a bike while watering his lawn. The robber demanded the man’s wallet and when he refused shot him in the abdomen, then grabbed his wallet before pedaling away.
By Sept. 8, nearly 3,000 people had been shot in Chicago in 2016, an average of one shooting victim every two hours. Five hundred and sixteen people had been murdered. Gun homicides and non-fatal shootings were up 47% over the same period of 2015, which had seen a significant rise in crime over 2014.

In October 2015, Mayor Rahm Emanuel told U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch during a crime meeting in Washington, D.C., that the Chicago police had gone “fetal,” and were less likely to interdict criminal behavior. That pull-back worsened in 2016, with pedestrian stops dropping 82% from January through July 20, 2016, compared with the same period in 2015, according to the Chicago police department. The cops are just “driving by people on the corners,” Mr. Angelo says, rather than checking out known drug dealers and others who raise suspicions. Criminals are back in control and black lives are being lost at a rate not seen for two decades.

WOW!,As a southsider, I have NO idea what this is about, but it sounds like it has the potential to be a HBO mini-series!
We are soooo tired of never seeing any police in our neighborhood.
That our beat cars are pulled to run up and down LSD and the Ghetto.
So here is an idea we are kicking around.
We will literally take the streets back by armed force.
On certain days, ODPOs and our neighbors with weapons permits, there are more and more every day will block off our streets. We will use vehicles, parking cones, and wooden barricades. There will be happy faced signs that say "Children's Play Street 4-6pm". People who live there can get in, people who don't will be politely asked to go around. If someone says they will call the police will tell them, "There are no police!" If someone says they will call the alderman tell him all his voters are out here with their kids.
We will get photos of moms and dads out there with pistols on their hips but keep the faces away. That will make great media and really fuck with Rahm.
