Thanks for Your Service

  • A sizeable group of retired city workers are set to lose their health insurance just days from now and are scrambling to figure out how they will afford coverage. [...]

“Maybe 86 years is enough” sighed retired City of Chicago employee, Julia Tyagay. The strain of Julia Tyagay’s situation adds to her list of ailments requiring physical therapy and prescription drugs. Years ago the retired civil engineer relied on the City of Chicago for her health insurance, but next year that’s scheduled to change costing her thousands. “They charge an awful amount,” Tyagay said.

“The city promised them it should follow through with its commitment, these are retirees where are they going to get this kind of money,” said Attorney Clint Krislov. “That’s the problem.”
These retirees, numbering up around 1,000, are facing bills running north of $1,500 a month and are ineligible for Medicare, which could prove to be a death sentence for many elderly workers who worked for the city for decades.

A final glimmer of hope:
  • There is a motion in the Illinois Supreme Court that would force the city to continue paying for worker health insurance near term, occurring Wednesday night. A decision is expected to be made any day now.

Serious question:

What kind of retirement medical care do retired Chicago elected officials get?

I have to pay my Medicare payments out of my Social Security payments which are 60% reduced. I hope President Trump will fix that.

My mother in law is in the same boat here. Her husband served the city for over 30 years and past away. Well she survived and now her half pension will be eaten up to pay for medical insurance that ends this year.

What a sad sign to all employees and retirees.
Any way to break the agreement works better then standing by an agreement.

Welcome to the real world where "life-time" benefits get cut back by organizations who cannot afford it any more.

Cut back some of the waste in Chicago and they can easily pay these people's healthcare. The sad thing is, there is so much waste of taxpayers' money, they take it out on the little guy (and girl).

How many people who worked at MANY Chicago-based companies lost pensions, healthcare and everything else? No one shed a tear for them.

No matter what you think, NOTHING is guaranteed. AND my BIG question would be - where is YOUR union?

What are you paying dues for? Oh wait. FOP is NOT going to protest anything. They know THEY have it good and they will do what they are told. ALL of you forgot - you work for a Cloutocracy, and the Union has no balls.

So you have that BIG premium? Welcome to what everyone else has to deal with. Start demanding better government and VOTE these idiots out.

Now that you're not "taken care of" you start to see how bad this government is run in this state.

Instead of asking for donations for a law suit that he was already paid for and a law suit that he agreed to an end date on. Tell me Rahms Administration didn't see this coming. Hey wake up Rahm, obamaCare is going away. No surprise that
Rahm's broham, Zeke the Dr. designed obamaCare to be a Death Warrant for the elderly.
Pushed through because "they lied to the stupid American people" was the quote from Jonathan Gruber, another architect of the Democrat healthcare scheme that Rahm relied on to screw over city Retirees.
If the Court can hold this over, the intention of the Trump Administration is to abolish the obamaCare farce and may force Rahm Emanuel to continue to pay the healthcare costs as promised. Remember, it's the gov. subsidies shrinking and rising premiums, low participation, and with Medicare and MedicAid being drained by nonworking deadbeats, hospitalized gunshot thugs, increased illegal immigration and refugees of the obama-rahm Administration.
No obamaCare should mean there are no cost effective alternatives as he promised, therefore previous agreement should remain intact until the healthcare issues are resolved probably again in the Supreme Court. Now some may see the importance of a new President Trump and who will pick the next 2-3 Supreme Court Jusctices to mend what Roberts allowed to remain.
Also, remember who voted twice for obama and the rest of the democrats in Chicago and thank them first for this predicament.

(But hey, "it's only $2 a pay period". Right?)

Incredible rahm buys votes spends hundreds of millions on taking care of the illegal criminals, he then stands their giving more lies as he protects the criminal element! But then again what do you expect from a so called man who was/is a ballerina raised in the richest of homes, the best schools, but yet cannot even protect his own family with the fleet of so called "security specialists" who are all patrolman rank but will get commanders and sergeants huge pension dip! his own son was not even protected then when the thug is caught rahm refuses to have him arrested and charged properly! Such a "law and order" mayor really a sickening display of cowardliness!

The blue line the coppers that sacrificed citizens who lived in this cesspool for their entire careers, saved how many lives get shit on typical rahm! Then you have "former police officer" (what was he on 1 month) Eddie Burke not saying anything as coppers health care is taken away!

Lastly why does fire have a pension based on civil service rank which is lyingtenant same rank as on cpd, they stopped the gold braid pension theft bill while our guy hauser just keeps giving our money away to political hacks, come on Kenny your the head and the fish stinks from the head down now like you promised stop the gold braid bill now "got balls?" Think of all that cash that could of easily paid for health care of these retirees but the pigs are just getting fatter and fatter and say "fuck everyone else it is about me!"

There's always money for pandering. But when you want to get more money to pander even more, you make budget cuts that will generate loud protests and great video. Because no one wants their 86 year old gramma (who served the city for so many years) to die... so... TAXES!

Politicians always make budget cuts that will hurt the weakest people. That always generates sympathy and media play and makes it ok then to raise taxes that will "help the unfortunate". It's a con game. Meanwhile, the fat cats get fatter and the politicians reap the windfalls.

here's an idea, when a citizen marries a person that is not a legal citizen, the non-citizen then benefits rather than getting deported (in theory). So what if a single police officer marries (with a prenup. agreement (i.e. no expectation of pension, etc.)) a single retired police officer and add them to their insurance. Have the new spouse agree to pay increase in monthly medical insurance. What benefit would the active member get, none, its just love that brought them together just like the citizen non-citizen affair.

And quit bitching about FOP they kicked in money to the attorney and came up with an alternative the joint plan with the city & Blue Cross.

While we are on the subject: You can beat the WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision) that reduces your Social Security by putting in 30 years of contributions (amount goes up a little each year). Every year of contributions from years 21 through 30 reduces the penalty a bit. Could be a strategy for younger guys. Go to SS website for details.
