- Chicago police shot a man who fled a traffic stop early Sunday in an incident that also sent three officers in the hospital, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
The man was in critical but stable condition Sunday, according to police. No gun was found at the scene of the shooting. Supt. Eddie Johnson said the hospitalized officers were in good condition and had perhaps already been released. The officer who fired at the suspect has been placed on administrative duty for 30 days, which is routine, he said.
[...] Police noticed a white Hyundai SUV speeding and running a stop sign at 2:20 a.m. near the 1200 block of South State Street, Johnson said. The driver initially stopped the car when officers tried to pull it over, but he drove south after officers left their car. Police followed the car for about five blocks and saw it drive up on the sidewalk, Johnson said.
Finally, the SUV sideswiped several cars and crashed into a police squad car, injuring the officers. Police approached the car and found the man in the driver’s seat. Johnson said the man struggled as officers tried to restrain him, and that’s when an officer shot him two times. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, Johnson said.
Notice the media placement of the "No gun was found at the scene" statement, completely disregarding the fact that the assailant deliberately drove up on the sidewalk (endangering pedestrians), crashed into a squad car (aggravated battery injuring officers) and continued to fight after his means of escape had been disabled (breaking numerous other laws.)
But "no gun" will be the media narrative along with the inevitable protestors.

The story does make it seem like there was no valid reason to shoot. The car was stopped so it was not being used as a weapon. A struggle for an officers weapon ok. They had better get there story straight, the paper and the cops.

The "unarmed" and the "no gun" narrative is pretty tired, but so too is a guy being shot over some traffic crap. Ok fair enough, he ran. Hey cops, some of your buddies )and especially your superiors, have a LOT of people scared that they are going to be shot over something as trivial as traffic stops. They really do fear being shot because they didn't answer certain bogus questions properly enough or fast enough or heck if they sneeze while being questioned. It is absolutely true that the vast majority of that fear is irrational. But you know what? Some of that fear is legit. Should they run? Of course not! But i have an idea for you, something along the lines of staying fetal.
Rather than slamming them down and wrestling and dogpiling (and then shooting?) these guys, why not corral them and wait them out? Why not break them down MENTALLY and make them cuff up willingly, well as willingly as it gets in such a situation, like in jail? Of course this won't work in all situations, and to an extent you guys already do this, but why take the bait these fools keep laying out for you to take - only to have the "no gun was found" drama?
If it take an hour telling a guy he has no choice but to cuff up and take his arrest like a man, heck if it takes three, what is the beef with it? See, on the street getting beat down form the po po is like a badge of honor. You guys think you got your job done effectively according to training, but all you really did was feed the ammunition belts of the BLM freaks and the media whores. What are they going to write about when you patiently wait out a guy who ran, got chased into a no escape situation and had to willingly give up. Better yet, what is gonna brag about to his homies? That he just gave in, that he punked out and didn't fight back?

Think it over, I envision LOTS of stories where cops are having their time taken up by the punk who refuses to cuff up. This is a situation where there was no time to "wait out" the offender. 1) There were injured officers who needed immediate medical treatment. Those injured officers are delayed their medical treatment until the offender is in custody and no longer able to cause further physical harm to others.
2) It is not easy to contain a scene and wait out an offender when it is an outdoor scene, where escape is easier and officers have little cover. Keep in mind, this is an offender who is armed with a weapon that can kill (his vehicle) after already using it to commit physical harm on officers.
3) How hard is it to contain an offender who is in possession of a vehicle, and has already proven to drive on sidewalks to escape custody? The officers need immediate action to prevent further such driving by the offender and protect life.

Ah, another academic who knows nothing about policing, but presumes to lecture the police on how it should be done. Gotta love the self-proclaimed 'expert'.
First, the irrational fear of the 'police shooting you if you sneeze' can be laid at the feet of the hyperdramatic media. Lecture them to stop their pursuit of the almighty dollar and tell the truth, instead of blaring false Enguirer-like headlines.
And, wherever you got your 'cuff-up' phrase, put it back there and never revisit it. You sound unutterably stupid whenever you use it.
