- Whole Foods Market, facing its worst sales slump in more than a decade, is taking a step that would have been unthinkable in its high-flying days: shrinking the size of the chain.
Though Whole Foods plans to open six stores during the current quarter, including two relocations, the company said Wednesday that it's shutting down nine. That kind of retrenchment hasn't happened since the last recession was underway in 2008.
The company, which about 440 U.S. stores, also said it was abandoning its ambitious growth target and no longer plans to reach 1,200 locations as it tries to get expenses under control.
So with everyone else being charged more to subsidize Rahm's dream of ending a "food desert," how will this impact Whole Foods bottom line?

Too bad, I hate to see a business close, people lose their jobs, no tax revenue for government who has to shift that burden on individuals. BUT...a bad business model is a bad business model and will not work unless it is the government bad business model. Which works to the detriment of the customer.
The Whole Food chain charges way less for its products at the Chicago's Englewood location while charging FULL BOAT at its other locations in working class white neighborhoods. I hope they go bankrupt. Imagine if it was learned that a store chain did the opposite and charged much more for its products in black neighborhoods than its stores in white neighborhood.
In the mean time shooting at 5300 W. Foster, I wonder who is it, the taxpayer or the tax taker. Alderman Arena any ideas why we need more in the neighborhood?

I wouldn't care if they build all the popular stores in black areas and even dropped the prices some. For me, that would mean I could let my wife and kids shop in Orland and other places by themselves. For now, I and my older son go with them armed. It's sad, but that's the reality and the liberal PC anti gun politicians are to blame.
I stopped shopping there as soon as they put up the "no guns" sign. Screw them.

Off topic but interesting, word is McCarthy is furious over being sidetracked in his bid to take over armed security at the airports with the Jackson nonsense. He had hoped to quietly disband the unarmed Clout babies at the airports and replace it with off duty C.P.D. as an added layer of qualified responders by as early as Fall 2017. Trump has vowed airports and airport security to be a major homeland security issue and $$$$$$ to go with it. Ex-Aviation was to be offered less sensitive positions with 2 current private companies at substantial less pay. No Stop Shopliffer Policy too. Loss prevention is nonexistent. All losses emanate from this location.
Should they close it, Pete's Produce will gladly fill that ready built void.
The land deal already made a politician some decent coin and the sizable lease is keeping Ho'Foods anchored for now.

I pass the Englewood WF every weekend morning. What stands out is that the Aldi, one block east, is crowded, while the WF is not.
It was actually reported on, too - the social experiment isn't going as well as some hoped.

That actually happened.
I was a department manager for both A&P and National Tea food stores in the 70's and it was discovered that National Tea, in particular, had three different pricing zones in the Chicago market. Even their newspaper flyers inserted in local papers reflected it.
The City's department of Weights and Measures got involved and ultimately, an ordinance was passed requiring uniform pricing in all areas of the city. It's probably still on the books. There was also a law against pricing fruits and vegetables 'by the piece', so those specials on '3 avocados for 1.99' and 50cents a cucumber are probably also still illegal. (Jane Byrne might have been with Weights and Measures then, but I don't recall.)

In fact, the term food desert was introduced in the early 1990s in western Scotland, where it was used to describe the poor access to nutritious foods experienced by residents of a public housing development.Let's stay away from "alternative facts."

Yes but you can't beat the bargain prices on their cigar leaves and loosies...
...and Aldi is on the way up. They should keep it bedrock-simple to keep the prices down, though, not turn into another Dominicks and drive themselves out of business with hand-painted price signs by artists, all that crap. Put it out on the skid and let us buy it. Simple.

Never shopped at a WF, probably never will.
I am disabled and was harassed by having 16 items instead of 15 at the checkout counter at the Whole Foods because it was closer to my car. I contacted the manager who scolded me. I'm filing charges with Chicago human rights. This sand store on south canal sells single cans of beer to thug bangers who are minors and harass customers.
