Hot Cars Headed to Town

  • A luxury car dealership in the North Suburbs is the latest target of car thieves.

Surveillance video shows a group of people breaking the glass at "Autobarn Mazda of Evanston," around midnight, and made off with 5 cars, 4 BMWs and a rare Porsche 9-11 turbo.

The suspects broke into the Autobarn's service area late Thursday night. They seemed to know where to find keys in an office. Shortly after, cameras show them driving away in five cars.

By 4 a.m. Friday, two of the stolen BMW's were recovered by Police and taken back to the dealership. They had been abandoned at Lake Shore Drive and Fullerton.
These cars are being used for joyriding and shootings. They are being stolen from dealerships and remote lots across the city and suburbs. Not only do the thieves break into dealerships, they sometimes hide in cars brought in for servicing and exit after dark, stealing keys and letting their buddies in to take cars five and six at a time. According to an e-mailer, one of the cars was used to "livestream" a rap video when police pursued it all over the west side.

And for the most part, the Department is forbidden to chase the cars. Great plan there.

They are doing the same thing at the car rental lots at OHare. 5-10 at a time drive off the lot. The rental companies leave the keys in the cars as a convenience to the customers. The overnight thugs that work the lots don't report them stolen until the morning to give their buddies some lead time. Most are joyrided all night, used for street robberies and then abandoned on the west side. The rental companies GPS the cars in the morning and send someone out to recover them. They don't want them processed for prints because they trash them with black powder rendering them unrentable so they purposely drive them back to OHare and have them recovered and put back on the lot.

Chase cars, criminals . ....we aren't really the police anymore . I hear that there is a foot persuit policy coming out soon . I'm not sure how much longer the citizens are going to keep paying us to not be able to do anything but give them a VIN.
I'm willing and ready to do so much more but , the citizens need to demand it from their politicians .

I'm ok with no chase on stolen vehicles and other minor offenses. Chase one of these assholes into the downtown area and he winds up killing an actual tax payer or family memeber.... let him keep the car, do his shooting on the Southside or westside does it really matter? I give a fuck about some asshole killing another asshole...I have no problem cleaning that up after the fact. I do have a problem cleaning up a proventable loss of a good citizens life. No chase for all non violent crimes is ok by me.

You would think with all the other "gizmos" they put on a car, they would have better security systems on them by now?

Maybe the dealer should boobytrap some cars so when they get hotwired, they blow up or kick out poison gas.

Problem solved.

Off topic but I need some solid advice here.....let's just say that someone I know (let's call this fictitious someone.... "Jimmy") has a video recording of a certain Sergeant demanding specific numbers (aka- a quota) and threatening PO's with punishment if they don't come in with said specific activity. Now, if this video were to leak out to a certain blog or internet site, would jimmy catch any shit legally for recording someone without their permission? More importantly, would releasing this video help our cause or have any success in eliminating this rash of CPD's self-promoting supervisors who continue to threaten the livelihoods of PO's by forcing them to put their jobs, families, and assets on the line? Is it worth it to Jimmy to have to face the possible legal and/or job-related ramifications that could possibly arise from releasing this video? I would tell Jimmy to go for it mainly because I would like to see this certain self-promoting sergeant possibly get pimp slapped by the same bosses he's been trying so hard to impress. But let's keep it serious here and tell me what Jimmy should do.

For you glorious hard-heads?

Don't chase.
Especially for hot cars.

The City and Department are
TELLING YOU they don't want you to chase.

The PUBLIC is telling you they're sick and tired
of you chasing.

The mood of Cook County prosecutors, judges
and juries is particularly SOUR regarding
CPD vehicle chases.

DOJ doesn't mind you chasing.
Every time a Police chase turns to shit,
The Civil Rights Division feels a tingle
up their leg.

ACLU WANTS your chase to turn
into a pile of flaming shit.
It's pure profit for them and
misery for you and your family.

God love you but you're on your own
when a chase (and resulting crash) ends up in Federal court.

Boss Says:"GO GETTEM!"

After The Dust Clears:
"Hey Boss... Uhhh... I need a little help."

Boss Says: "Do I know you?"

Go ahead.
Take that lick for the good
of society and think things
are going to magically turn
out ok because you wear that
blue suit.

You'll be made a spectacle of
PRECISELY BECAUSE you wear
that blue suit.

Protect yourselves.
Make yourselves small,
hard-to-see/hard-to-hit
targets.

It's mostly the car dealers fault. They leave the keys in the sun visor or somewhere in the car because keeping the keys in a safe would be a "logistical nightmare." Then you have the real police chasing them all over 011. I'm not buying a ticket for your 10-1 party.

I like the part where they seemed to know where the keys are. From lot boys to salesmen, auto dealers do a horrible job when they hire people. They pay very poorly and get ripped off by these people, most of whom are in business for themselves. I think in part the management is always looking for hustlers. Inside job at some level is the common denominator in most of these capers. Nice people to do business with. We had a sales manager who would take cars in trade, title them into his name and then sell them. All off the books. When he got caught he said he was going to present the dealer with a big check as a surprise. No, the surprise was on him and when his federal trial was over, he went to prison for 85% of 15 years. It was well over a $100,000 over a period of years. What a goof.

Let dude destroy these cars, McGrath on Grand Ave has had a few customers cars stolen right after they have been in for service. Seems like thier porters takes the valet key from the owners manual which the owner never knew was there and go to the owners home and grab the car. McGrath refuses to help the police with any info. This has been going on for months. The dealership on Armitage and the Kennedy has been hit 4 times in the past 2-3 months. It has little to do the the policy's and procedures at the dealers or the employees. Dealers have the technology and man power to keep their property safe. In my opinion the thugs that run around in this city have overwhelmed the rest of us. They know the security guards are not armed. Also the fact that most these dealers carry good insurance for damage and theft. Thugs know after the heist the dealers will get paid for the loss and that's it. I am not certain however I would think this type of crime is pretty low on the priority list of CPD. What needs to happen is laws need to change to protect us from minors who get paid by older thugs to commit their crimes. The thugs are evolving. Laws and good citizens need to as well. Business also need to make the investment of better technology and security. As soon as one of these thugs gets gunned down and the city goes up for grabs will things change.

"Jimmy" should go out and do some fucking police work and he won't have to worry about any kind of quota system. It's always the dogs that like to throw around the "quota" scare. If you work and you see a Parker, write it. If you are a jagoff do a California roll through a stop sign, write him. If you see someone pass on the right from a red light, write him. It's that too hard?? The days of stopping guys on the corner are over. Get back to basic police work. Parkers, movers and bus checks. If you can't do that during your tour the quit the job.

Yes, Rahm's Kids Summer Jobs Program hire the best. And it's just winter off-season you understand... this activity will pick up after Ghetto Ground Hog day on Apr 2nd when the sewer rat pops out of the hole and sees his Cheeto.

Dealerships are insured, the cost is passed on to the consumer, but that's better than you taking time for a juvenile joe trashing a stolt-car. Yes, the dealerships deep pockets can also responsible for how they secure the vehicles and consequential damages/harm to others through negligence, why would anyone risk their financial security for joe and the merit boss?
When was the last time PSMV was approved and a Thank You was given by the car owner, dealer or insurance company?

Stolen cars are not a Police problem anymore, they're a PrickCanker Cook County problem.
Don't chase for a misdemeanor, eventually they'll call to 3-1-1 to recover them.
The one traffic crash you'll may live to remember is the one when you're broadsided by a fleeing vehicle chased by another.
Hey if they're not shooting at you, don't chase.

car chases should have been over a few years ago. If you don't get that, You Are Wrong! Chicago Police work is not about catching criminals, it's about votes.
I know it's hard to swallow, but it is what it is.

Soon, you wil see the new "foot Pursuit" order, and it will become obvious that state law, and department directives, are two different animals.

There will be rules similar to vehicle pursuits, that will dictate when you can and can't run after an offender. Supervisors will have to montior foot pursuits. There will be a "balancing test" used to determine if the risks to the public (whatever the fuck those are) outweight the need to apprehend the offender. Following an offender into a building will NOT be allowed. The pursuit will stop if the officer loses sight of the offender. And most likely, the pursuit must stop if the offender is not longer an immediate threat (tosses the gun).
If that last one is actually put in writing, you should really think about how that will shift liability to the individual officer during any pursuit.

Now, not for me to tell anyone what to do, and what not to do. Do what makes you happy, just please be smart about it. If something like this goes into effect, and you decide to pursue, and dude ducks into somewhere, maybe consider the following: establish a perimeter, call swat, and wait. Hopefully someone gets assigned to make coffee runs for the oficers. Backlogs are not the responsibility of the patrol officer. (could make for a fun summer, and a never-ending backlog).
Yes, an order like this will be another rush to put in place something "new", to focus on the preservation of life [of the offender]. It's not new, just something used by back-woods departments in bumble-fuck boonie town, where crime is low, and officers work 99 every day. However, there does not exist anyone in HQ with the most simple understanding of logistics, and manpower (as made clear by last weeks mandatory overtime/sit around the station for hours waiting for cars). Don't get angry. It's not our fault, but we do have to follow the rules, so make the best of it.

I'm hardly an expert on police policy, but the Internet can be a very dangerous place. Jimmy's smartphone could be hacked, and the contents dumped on a site like Wikileaks. Naturally whichever gang of evil, evil hackers would do such a thing to poor Jimmy would replace the metadata in the video that could identify the phone and its owner with references to their evil hacking collective. If someone is targeted by these hackers it's possible that they didn't even intentionally record the video--there's ways to compromise a laptop or cell phone such that the camera/microphone is turned on remotely. You guys are probably already familiar with the Prey app since it's sometimes used to recover stolen phones, same deal but in unauthorized malware form. This leaked video would probably be mixed in with a number of mundane recordings as well for plausible de--err, I mean because hackers want all information to be free, not just the one thing worth seeing.

I can't see it ending well if CPD's political goon squad starts thinking that Jimmy intentionally torpedoed them, though, so it could get dicey if this hypothetical video was in a one-on-one type setting.

Sorry for the off topic comment but I felt everyone should be aware of this:

In Friday's Sun Times there's an article about funds being donated to UNCF [University of North Carolina Fayetteville]. I was taken back by such a nice gesture on the part of Mayor Tiny Dancer. Oh my God Batman! Much to my surprise I was entirely wrong. UNCF is actually the United Negro College Fund. Here I thought the use of the word Negro was no longer acceptable. Oh well, I bad. What I can't understand is why money for advanced education is going to functionally illiterate imbeciles' who don't know the difference between the noun "axe" and the verb "ask." The article also states that $250,000 was donated to UNCF by City of Chicago employees. I called the Mayors Office and "axed" if a list of these donors was available through a FOIA request. They told me no because that info was of a personal nature regarding each employee who donated. I smell a 9 ½ fingered rat here. I wouldn't doubt that this North Shore raised asshole gave these morons 250k of City funds. What about all of us retired coopers you threw under the bus you little prick?

Hey Northwest siders. Friday shooting on Higgins in Park Ridge near the border of Chicago. MSM has no coverage. Looks like an armed robbery.

All bull. No robbery but accidental shooting inside the car. They made the robbery story up to cover.

The bangers are getting better rental cars than CPD and don't have to wait around for them.

******

So basically they're borrowed, not rented? Sounds good to me - 19/P.

2/04/2017 02:15:00 AM

Jimmy should read the department rules and state laws that he violated with his illegal recording. Jimmy should realize that the illegal recording can't be used as evidence in a civil or criminal trial, except as evidence of his own crime. Jimmy should release this anyway because I'd like to see Jimmy get fired and go to prison for being a little bitch. If your Sgt is giving you a quota and threatening you if you don't produce certain activity, call him on it and tell the Lt that he is giving you an illegal quota. If the Lt doesn't do anything, go above him. Keep going up the chain until someone does the right thing. I suspect Jimmy is not very bright, and that he wasn't actually given a quota, nor threatened with anything. I suspect Jimmy was asked to get a few tickets and ISRs and Jimmy used his little pea brain to decide that's a quota. Please tell Jimmy to release his video and upload it to YouTube. I can't wait. It's really not that hard to look this stuff up yourself and read and understand it.

Definitely a troll. Department policy prohibits chasing these idiots when they start endangering lives... they know this so they KEEP GOING. Not worth losing your job or home over some stolen car.
