12 Month Gains Lost in 30 Days

  • In one month, Illinois manufacturing sector lost all of the jobs it had gained in the last 12 months, marking one of the worst employment reports for the state's lagging economy since the recession.

A preliminary report released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows August saw 3,000 lost manufacturing jobs. This loss of employment is the worst month in Illinois since fall of 2009. The unemployment rate also rose to 5 percent.

Overall, the state lost a net 3,700 jobs in August. Illinois has averaged 100 jobs lost per month since March.

While some sectors gained, Illinois' leisure and hospitality industry lost 9,900 jobs. Some job losses in that industry are common in the fall when tourism wanes. But IDES Spokesman Bob Gough says losing 3,000 manufacturing jobs is troubling.

"The manufacturing sector has been a tough road to hoe for a number of years now," he said. "But any way you slice it, the state's economy is stuck in neutral, and that's a kind way to put it."
Someone doesn't know their idioms (you don't have a "tough road to hoe." That breaks tools. It's a farming term - "tough row to hoe"). Maybe it was the reporter.

In any event, manufacturing firms are still fleeing Illinois faster than jobs can be created, and the business climate (read "tax code") is the main reason. Every single level of government is full of out-of-control spending and their only solution to a decreasing tax base is to soak those remaining until they, too, decide to leave. Death Spiral is the term often used, and it's in full swing.

There's only one man who could beat that record:
business chaser John Arena. He refuses to let them in.
God only knows what he has planned for his ward. One
thing you can count on: John Arena will have a substantially
higher net worth when he leaves office than when he first entered.
A government job is not the solution to a life of chronic unemployment.
His political decisions to date are highly suspect and give insight to the
life he led as a private citizen.

Unpossible! Reporters have layers and layers of fact checkers. That is why they are so trustworthy and superior to us mere mortals. If they don't have all that support, why should we trust them, especially when they are writing about things they have no knowledge or expertise about?

Because we do trust these reporters, don't we?

I am not a cop but read your blog daily. I am a commercial real estate appraiser who appraises a lot of industrial property in Illinois. Just a quick story on how bad it is in Illinois. Chicago Heights in their industrial districts has a 34% property tax rate (based on equalized assessed value) on industrial properties. I recently appraised an industrial property that annually pays over $250,000 per year in property taxes. Over $175,000 of that bill goes to pay local school taxes and pensions. They don't receive anything for that money. They have to pay for 24/7 armed security for their business because crime in the area is so bad. The business is relocating to central Indiana where their new industrial property tax rate will be 2.7% + State of Indiana employment tax credits +lower workmen's comp insurance + lower business insurance + lower commercial truck licensing and operating cost + lower utility bills + lower water bills + lower crime, etc. It's a no brainer to move a manufacturing business out of Cook County to Indiana or Southeast Wisconsin. SCC, keep up your excellent work.

one thing for certain, I am glad that one Madigan is out of public office . But, I wonder what Lisa has planned for her future. Michael is the architect of the downfall of this state as Daley was the architect of the downfall of the city. The political class does not treat the citizens with respect, just as a money maker for them and their friends. I wish I could leave this state but circumstances prevent that. I wonder when the citizens will rise up and throw these bums out of office. What is taken for normal in this state is criminal in so many other places. But, look who passes the laws?

(formerly) beloved NFL. Just got word over
the radio that players from both teams took knees
in London this morning. Disgraceful. There's going
to be a backlash over this bigger than they ever imagined.
The NFL will inherit a John Steinbeck "Grapes of Wrath"
effect. They will roam the entire globe and not be accepted
or welcomed, this after losing the heartstrings of the American
paying public. Too dense to pick up on public opinion here at
home, the players disgraced America in our mother country.
They have no class, no morals, no conscience. They have turned
their backs upon America. Now it is time the American people
find a better pass time and let the NFL be cast to the wind.

You're correct. A better way to go about it is to learn a lesson from their neighbors to the south and tax the bejesus of anyone stupid enough to make anything that people are willing to buy, rhen encouraging illegals (sorry, "undocumented workers") to flock in and join with the rest of the great unwashed in suckling off the few remaining taxpayers teats.

Yep, good thing that we have smarter elected officials (democrat) than up in that hellhole.

This is exactly what the liberal democrats in Illinois want. All private sector jobs to leave the state and all residents that can take care of themselves, to get out. Those that are left will be totally dependent on the government.
The government can then decide who gets what and what "rights" the people will have. Not the unalienable rights given to us by God, and our rights under the U.S. Constitution.
Sound a little bit like communism? Its exactly like communism, just a different name, liberal democrats!

Nearest neighbor a block away. Yeah, maybe I'll move back to Shitcago. Have to think about it for another 25 years.

If fuel plays a part in a business, well, they get taxed and taxed again in just this latest "budget deals". That is the new term for "tax increase" now. "Budget Deals".
Might as well call them "exit interviews".

Quick, head me off at the pass, install a state wide exit tax that amounts to half your gross worth. Of course, illegal aliens are exempt 100% and can come and go as they please.

Can't wait to see how man jobs the Bears Kill this weekend by taking a knee because millionaire football players are so underprivileged oh and cops are running around killing hundreds of black people in Chicago every year.

You guys here at SCC really DO have to take this head on.
The "community" REALLY DOES believe AND teach their kids that - all of these "unsolved" or "open" or "not cleared" murders are just cops hunting black people to kill each night.

You know it is bullshit. I know it is bullshit. Heck, a large portion of those preaching it know its bullshit. However, while people will toss out statistics and tables and charts (which is right and proper) those things fail because nobody calls bullshit openly on that particular point DIRECTLY, especially by calling out individuals in the moment to get them to say it in those terms!

Example - When a "activist" claims "police killing black people" drama, where is the snapping it off in their ass right then? Hey, Mr Activist, are you saying right here, right now, that all these bodies laying in the streets- hundreds and hundreds per year, thousands and thousands over the years, are killed by police in some kind of hunt? Are you saying it is Police shooting them dead and leaving them lay? Oooooh your AREN'T? Is that right? SO WHO then IS shooting people by the hundreds in just Chicago? Is it Polar Bears Hunting in packs then? Is that it.

Time to lay waste to the "community" organizations peddling LIES, before ALL the jobs are gone.....and cops and firefighters are the only people left paying tax, on like soda and stuff.

9/24/2017 02:36:00 AM

So a tax NOT PAID is money COSTING taxpayers a million per job?
So when you don't get a piece of candy in the FIRST place, it COST you candy?

You talk to people about doing the math? Seriously?
Try this- without the tax BREAKS (IE absent the tax NOT COLLECTED) there wouldn't BE a factory being built and that means there wouldn't BE one cent there at all! There would be NO COST to taxpayers because there would be no business there at all.

By NOT TAXING (which is not a cost and not to taxpayers) there IS a business built - which then pays workers, who pay income taxes they would not otherwise pay, local sales taxes along with property taxes and all the CYCLING of those paychecks then spent (even saved) that otherwise wouldn't be there.

SO enough of your common core math claims that NOT TAXING something that wasn't there to begin with is any COST to ANYBODY. Stop your outright LYING. Math is what bust you out.....

Went to Jewel and bought a 2 liter bottle of Diet Rite cola which has no sugar, no calories and no sodium for 79cents.
