- A Southwest Side alderman has called on the Chicago Police Department to change the way it handles its broader street gang database system.
Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th) said the database is too cumbersome, and is deeply flawed, because people might be listed who shouldn’t be.
The alderman said the department should notify the 340,000 people currently on its wider gang database that they’re on the list, and give them a chance to prove they’re not connected in any way to a gang and to have their names removed from the list.
According to whose standards though? Because a gang bangers wouldn't have any incentive to lie, right? Are we talking about full body searches for tattoos? Sworn affidavits from three upstanding citizens, a priest not Phleger and a verifiable revenue stream that is proved to IRS specifications?
Or is Ray just looking to expand his definition of "innocent lives" in case of another shooting to recoup political support?

I had to look up where this ward was located. I found out it is in parts of Brighton Park, Back of the Yards and Englewood. This idiot may be beyond salvation. These are some of the worst killing fields of Chicago. Is he serving the law abiding citizens or gang bangers? Besides, being in the gang database will not stop a person from getting a job in the private sector. It will not even stop persons from getting jobs in many government agencies.

And how do you prove a negative. How often do we read about a shooting victim where family and friends deny any gang affiliation but the victim has pictures all over social media indicating otherwise. Or somebody who regularly hangs with members but denies any involvement. Or 3rd, 4th, 5th generation where the entire family is in it. Something put them there.
This sounds like another great use of taxpayer money in a town that can't find enough things to tax and is constantly looking for more money! I am sure that going through this process will lower the crime and murder rate in the city and make us all safer.

If there are 340,000 gang members on the list and there are 12,000 Chicago Police Officers on the job, just give everyone 28.33 names each and have them conduct interviews asking the stupid questions proposed by Ray-Ray.
