Very bad mass shooting in Las Vegas overnight. Many dead and injured. The two cops who took down the sniper were badly hurt and some off duty cops (unknown agency), enjoying a concert on their night off appear to have been among the wouned. Unfortunately, this appears to be part of the new "normal."

I am a retired Chicago Police Officer living in Vegas. The two wounded Officers were part of a group of off duty Officers from Bakersfield California
There are only 3 facts so far:
1. The quantity of victims shot.
2. The quantity of victims who have died from being shot.
3. The evidence being collected to determine the what, where, when, how and who involved in this event.
That is all.
These mass shootings, assholes disrespecting the flag, kneeling for National Anthem..... I believe the world is coming off its axis.

It appears there were several off-duty police officers from different agencies there at the concert. I live in AZ now, and DPS (our state police) had one officer and non-sworn employee attending the show off-duty. The officer was wounded by shrapnel and the non-sworn employee was unhurt. There were a few Mesa, AZ police officers attending the concert too off-duty and they were unhurt.

This is so sick and sad that there are no words for it. Although it's nearly impossible to stop something as evil as this, I just hope our city will be proactive and finally utilize the carbine trained officers the right way. They should be patrolling either on foot at the ready. Or in a car with partner at the ready. That would be the only chance to stop someone bent on evil. Meet power with overwhelming power. Create a carbine unit or OT program. Anything. Stop worrying about the "optics" of trained cops patrolling with carbines. New York and numerous other cities do it. Its already starting. Funny thing is most of these mass shootings are done by democratic looneys. A lot of them should have been in jail or psyched but are walking around due to left leaning liberal judges.
The active shooter training I've had (not CPD) didn't include anything like a 'clocktower' situation. Imagine trying to put fire on that window up there- with bullet drop, wind, etc- you'd risk hitting another room entirely (something they didn't have to worry about with Whitman).
Maybe now crowd events have to have counter-sniper teams set up?

Sheriff did say that, but also said officers discharged their weapons when they entered the room. If he wasn't dead when they entered he didn't live much longer. Sheriff Lombardo is an absolutely outstanding law enforcement leader. I'm sure everyone knows there is no Las Vegas police department. The entire county (Clark) is protected by the outstanding Metropolitan (Metro) police department.

It isn't difficult to kill and wound in high numbers with Automatic Fire. The News is up to about 515+ wounded...58 dead IIRC.
And I would bet that not all of the dead are from bullet wounds, there are going to be some dead due to trampling due to the panic in the crowd of over 22k (thats the number I heard that was at the concert.).

I have been to that casino before, you cannot wipe your nose without some security guy standing right next to you with a tissue. I'm a recent retiree, 31 yrs. Two things I wanted to share. 1) I just watched the latest press conference from Las Vegas. I'm pretty impressed with Sheriff Joe Lombardo. He presents with amazing professionalism yet you can sense his pain for mankind. He comes prepared and is patient with the reporters questions and has the answers. He immediately shuts them down when he can't divulge specifics. 2) It's pretty sad when I think of how Chicago would present to the world should such a tragedy occur here. The Rahmster has no clue how pathetic the Police leadership is and what a mess they would make if ever put to the task. To deny training to the Officers for years and putting those funds into his pet projects and friends pockets as well as his is just as monstrous as what this idiot did in Las Vegas as it will be the death of many when shit hits the fan here.
Las Vegas was included in the list of targets of terrorists but it appears they had nothing in place in case of such an attack.

Once you face the fact that death is inevitable and, thus, certain, your perspective on the purpose of living adjusts in one of two thoroughly different directions.....either you find that you value the quality of who you are most highly or you decide to value what you can get before you die.
If the former, you have determined that living is most valuable an experience when dedicated to helping another, if the latter, that getting for yourself makes the most sense to you.
Since the quality of the former is giving and the quality of the latter is getting, the former cares not for quantity, while to the latter, quantity is all, which, once death takes you, becomes nothing.

The problem with this is, or should be, obvious.......with over a century's worth of generational conditioning, both on the "civilian" side and the law enforcer's side, what would be the reaction of law enforcers to observing a "civilian" in the act of using that long gun?
The civilian knows he/she is returning fire.
The law enforcer presumes, by default, the opposite.
And within those first brief moments of initial awareness, who in law enforcement would be willing, let alone capable, of determining which is which?
As a nation substantially committed to submitting to the rule of law, and, thus, to those whose profession is the enforcement of law, the civilian taking action, becoming an "active shooter", effectively puts himself between the proverbial rock and a hard place.......
