No Ghetto Lottery Payout
- A federal jury sided with Chicago police Friday and awarded no damages to a woman who alleged that detectives coerced her into confessing to the killing of her 4-year-old son more than a decade ago.
Nicole Harris spent nearly eight years in prison before a federal appeals court in 2013 overturned her murder conviction. After her release, Harris sued eight Chicago police detectives and officers involved in the investigation, alleging they coerced her confession during a 27-hour interrogation that involved questionable use of a lie detector test.
After hearing three weeks of evidence, the jury deliberated for about seven hours before finding in favor of the officers on all seven counts, including conspiracy, fabrication of evidence, malicious prosecution and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Harris was not present for the verdict when it was read in U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve’s courtroom. Her lawyers said in a statement that they were “very disappointed” with the outcome.
Good to see there are still some intelligent jurors out there - federal courts draws from outside Cook County, so that's a plus.

No chance in hell the tides are turning. If the payouts stop, the lawyers stop getting paid. The lawyers (including judges) control everything in those courtrooms.
But why did an appeals court overturn her conviction?

As a detective involved in this trial the Cook County States Attorney refused to retry her because of their incompetence. Forensic evidence proved all along this was a homicide and not an accident like her attorneys wanted the jurors to believe. Joe Mcgatts from the Cook County States Attorney is the one who refused to retry this case. It only took the jurors 6 hours to come to their decision after 3 weeks of this trial. Nicole Harris received a certificate of innocence on top of this from cook county. She can wipe her fat ass with that paper it doesn't mean anything as the jurors proved. Hats off to the Law firm of Andrew Hale who represented us. Andrew Hale Scott Jebson and Jennifer Bitoy. There will be more to come in regards to this useless certificate of innocence

Isn't there some way for the cops to receive compensation from what the lawyers put them through?
If Rahm had a functioning brain cell or two he'd realize that this verdict would be typical for 99% of the bullshit lawsuits filed against you Officers for ::cough:: 'Police Brutality' if he'd fight them in court instead of immediately whipping out the checkbook.
In short order the 'community' would get the message and realize that the glory days of the 'Ghetto Lottery' are over.
Also, besides saving Chicago Taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in bogus payouts, you guys and gals could get back to being -- The Police. You coppers on the street would know that the City has your backs and you wouldn't have to worry about frivolous lawsuits springing from every arrest you make.

From what's in the Tribune article: The appellate court ruled the trial Judge should have allowed the woman's other child to testify in her defense (kid was 5 or 6). The trial Judge ruled the child was too young as the kid believed in Santa Claus and Spiderman (didn't know what was real or make-believe).

One reason was the judge in the original trial wouldn’t let her 5 year old son testify after questioning him and he said he believe in Santa Claus and something like the Easter bunny. Guess judge figured 5 year old is not a competent witness. That was one reason

Doesn’t make sense. She lost the case and therefore she would have lost the punitive damages also. Juries rule all the time for damages but limit or don’t give punitive damages you can’t collect punitive damages or any other damages if you lose the case
Lawyers must have been confident of a big victory if they let her do that. I know she dictates and tells her lawyers what to do, but they have ways to get her to change her mind

Didn’t Daley start to do that at the end of his term. Remember the lawyers were all complaining. Before, file a suit, make a quick settlement and they made money. Thought things started to turn around then

It is important that I spell Joe McGats's name properly so that ALL CHICAGO POLICE OFFICERS are fully aware of this morally and ethically bankrupt piece of shit who is in a position of great authority in the Crook County States Attorney's Office. His refusal to NOT retry Nicole Harris had no basis in fact or law, but everything to do with politics and race. Remember this jagoff, he attempted to destroy the careers of some very dedicated, respectful, and honest detectives. He NEVER spoke to any detectives in this case, did not speak to the medical examiner, circumstantial witnesses (including the family of Nicole Harris who stated they KNEW she killed 4 year old Jaquari Dancy), and Nicole Harris's fiance at the time who stated at the Grand Jury the only reason he remained with Nicole Harris was because he was afraid she would hurt the children, which is exactly what she did when she strangled 4 year old Jaquari Dancy. Fuck You Joe McGats and Fuck You Anita Alavrez. The blood of Jaquari Dancy is and forever will be on your hands.

I just found out the other day (December 1, 2017) that the loving, murdering bitch mother, Nicole Harris, who received over $200,000 from the State of Illinois when she was initially released did not even have the HUMAN DECENCY to purchase a head stone for her four year old son, Jaquari Dancy, who the fucking bitch strangled to death. Her lying fucking lawyers from the People's Law Office tried to portray this murdering bitch as the loving Mother Of the Century in Federal Court. You know who is paying for poor Jaquari Dancy's headstone, the attorney who represented us, ANDREW HALE, out of his OWN pocket because this poor kid is lying in an unmarked grave. Once we found out that Mr. Hale was paying for this out of his own pocket, all the detectives in this case have decided to donate money for Jaquari's headstone. And we were the ones the People's Law Office tried to portray as evil. What a fucked up world we live in.
