- Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Sunday 53 new police officers have been deployed to their first district assignments as part of the plan to grow the Chicago Police Department by nearly 1,000 officers.
“We are putting more police on the street — from the far north side to the far south side to the west side and neighborhoods in between — and we are getting gangs, guns and drugs off the street,” the mayor said. “Each of these men and women who are hitting the street today know that they can make a difference, and each of them will help us all achieve a better tomorrow.”
Rahm must have needed some timely positive press. The ones in our District have been here a month, maybe more. There must be a wave of retirements in the offing that are going to leave the Districts strapped for manpower again. Or maybe a giant Airport bid? In the meantime, NYPD graduated it's smallest class in recent memory - 400 Officers.
Rahm seems to be falling a bit short (again) of his promise to hire "nearly 1,000" officers because those pesky officers keep retiring or moving on to other jobs. All of this, while those in charge of "screening" potential candidates manage to disqualify a disturbingly high number of applicants based on god knows what.

The first, most credible, most specific promise was to have 13,445 (I believe that is the exact number) of sworn officers on staff in the department by 2018. That line helped get him reelected and pass a gigantic tax increase.
He stuck by the number when the problem of retiring officers was brought up.
He laid out his plan for beefing up the Acadamy to get it done.
13,445 (I believe) ON STAFF. Not 'Hire 1000 officers' .... which became 'Put 1000 officers on the street'....which became '500 officers'...

I've heard from someone who works in personnel that if you are m-2, your application is "filed". If you are a 1, 3, or 4, you are fast-tracked. Even if you had arrests. Talked to an fto from the south side. Her poo brags that he had 7 narcotic arrests. During patrol he likes to wear headphones and stop to talk to his "homies" on the corner. I'm going to make a prediction: considering the "quality" of our recruits and recently promoted, in 3 to 5 years, CPD will be rocked by an unbelievable amount of scandals. The city is only lowering their standards for certain genders and ethnic groups which is in itself the very definition of racism. To the second part of your post, anyone that becomes an FTO on this job now is a goof and if they don’t like the tasks they are being given they can easily give up the position. The city doesn’t need to or care to justify anything. The city’s plan is to destroy this department and erase any trace of what it once was. They want to make this job as miserable as possible in order to force out anyone who currently has 15 or more years on and might remember how much better this job actually used to be. Second, if you value your health and well being, quickly vacate the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and state of Illinois. White male, Masters, military, PT with the best of them, strong professional work history, and ZERO background issues! None, not even a documented speeding ticketing! Apparently I need a fucking cane to help me PT. Yeah, saw that recruit when I did my poly. What a joke. At this point I don't want the gig, just bitter at how the selection is done. Now I'll enjoy my family in a southern burb with one of the lowest crime rates in the state. Fuck you HR. Bunch of racist, know nothing, do nothing, assholes. Now I'm done.

Guess I can’t do the math either. Even with your math of 50 retiring in the next 60 days, two months. So assuming even with low figure of 53 a month coming out of academy that’s 106 new po’s, 50 retiring. That’s a plus 56 pos. What’s to write about?

Boo hoo...Black male w/ a master's, commissioned officer, prior service as an NCO, tested as a lateral with one town and didn't even get my score just got a you didn't make it letter. Scored top 5 every other PD I tested for. Took the same test with another town and almost got a perfect score. It happens. Matter of fact, a white friend (who is on the job too) took it with me and he got the shaft too.
If you want to be the police then do what you gotta do to get on somewhere else. Otherwise cry me a river. Everyday coppers on here tell you exactly how ate up this department and this city are and you want it anyway, now you're mad. If you're done then go but keep the whimpering to yourself. They are still going to need DOA to secure the gates leading into airport secure areas. Rumor has its that the Israeli securty firm hired to do a study on airport securty wrote a not to nice report stating the airport was severly understaffed and unsecured. Yeh, we do that in our district, too. 4/5 FTOs on the watch 1 FTO will get 2, another will get none, and each of our 'acting up' PO's will get one, and get out of grade pay, while a real FTO doesn't get a recruit.
The city with no money has the money to pay out of grade to a PO AND pay an FTO with no PPO. Makes perfect sense here....

Not Red Squad, that was different. To answer the original question: It was known as the TUF (Tactical Undercover Function) and it operated primarily out of Area 4 (Maxwell St) Task Force. The name was an obvious play on words. Most of its operations involved what was then the West Madison, Skid Row, which was infamous for brutal Strong Armed Robberies. On member of the unit acted as a drunk decoy and the rest were his backup who would descend on any asshole stupid enough to hit the decoy. It usually ended very badly for the bad guy. It was around from the early 60's until sometime in the early 70's or so. A lot of medals were awarded to members of the unit. Assignment to it usually only was on weekend nights and was rotated among Area 4 Task Force personnel. it was great fun.
I was on the job back in the 60's, but I kind of forgot everything when I retired.
Yes can someone in the media please FOIA the numbers from 2017 and expose this guy already. PPO’s hires and all ranks retired. With 50-60 graduating at a time it will take Rahm a decade to add 1000 new police to the street. Maybe the Hary McCarthy for Mayor campaign should request the numbers? Show what a liar Rahm has been. It’s a good place to start.

I was in the 2016 process, but after the runaround for the last year after my BI was submitted to CPD, I decided to have my application pulled from further BS. White male, Masters, military, PT with the best of them, strong professional work history, and ZERO background issues! None, not even a documented speeding ticketing! Apparently I need a fucking cane to help me PT. Yeah, saw that recruit when I did my poly. What a joke. At this point I don't want the gig, just bitter at how the selection is done. Now I'll enjoy my family in a southern burb with one of the lowest crime rates in the state. Fuck you HR. Bunch of racist, know nothing, do nothing, assholes. Now I'm done.

Boo hoo...Black male w/ a master's, commissioned officer, prior service as an NCO, tested as a lateral with one town and didn't even get my score just got a you didn't make it letter. Scored top 5 every other PD I tested for. Took the same test with another town and almost got a perfect score. It happens. Matter of fact, a white friend (who is on the job too) took it with me and he got the shaft too.
If you want to be the police then do what you gotta do to get on somewhere else. Otherwise cry me a river. Everyday coppers on here tell you exactly how ate up this department and this city are and you want it anyway, now you're mad. If you're done then go but keep the whimpering to yourself. It was gonna be years of unfair stuff happening over and over to you again anyway. It gets worse for years until it gets better.
