Hey Dart?

  • Under a new state contract, all inmates in New York State prisons will receive free tablets.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is partnering with JPay, a company that specializes in inmate and corrections-related services. JPay is providing the tablets at no cost to the state or inmates, and DOCCS is not taking commissions for the tablets.

The tablets will be preloaded with educational content and DOCCS plans to make additional services available through the tablets, such as Prison Rape Elimination Act reporting, Grievance filing, and the potential for placing commissary orders.

According to DOCCS, JPay will get money from transactions that happen via the tablets (ebooks, music, videos). The tablets are only part of a larger contract with JPay who are also handling commissary and care packages sent from families to inmates.
All you need is a connected company to steer the crooked contract to.

When I go to county— I want to order a pizza from my tablet, and give the shithole a review on yelp. Talk to my baby momma on video chat. Them see what’s up in the neighborhood with a WhatsApp call to some of my boys. Then I am gonna hit up my lawyer...

Strange life today for assholes

All the connected procurement nonsense aside, what else can be surmise might occur?

Some items for careful consideration:

* Hacking - going to sites that are "blocked".

* Loading apps that ought not be loaded to communicate surreptitiously.

* Using allowed sites/apps for surreptitious communications via coded message or posting.

* Smashing the tablet and using the glass, plastic, etc. to fashion weapons.

* Puncturing the back so the LiON battery is exposed to air which results in fires and explosions.

* Using the tablet as a weapon itself by smashing someone's face/head in with it.

* Smashing someone's fingers with the tablet

* Misusing the chargers - cooking, fires, even communication methods by causing electrical disturbances.

* Stealing someone's tablet...

And that's just what comes to mind off the bat... There's likely more that the brain trust which sits and ponders on doing crazy shit for 24x7 can come up with.

And this isn't far fetched - lots of computers installed in libraries, tightly controlled, etc. all get hacked at and rewired to accomplish nefarious goals.

Government money involved? If not, who cares? Tablets will replace cigarettes as prison currency. You can get a cheap tablet for the price of a carton now anyway.

This will work as well as the purchase of IPADs in California a few years back. No bid process for the devices (no upgrades of course, no security software, no educational software) over 1 BILLION dollars directly to Apple. Yikes.

I just paid $300 for a new iPad, they probably paid $1500.
Such a deal.

Guess it makes sense that CPS also is providing iPads to future inmates, gives them a leg up on computer skills.

- It would not surprise me if the liberal, diverse, inclusive Starbucks will soon test that idea nationwide, free of course.

Preloading these Tablets with Educational Content is not a bad thing in and of itself.

So long as the Tablets do not have unlimited access to the Internet, giving Jailed Felons the chance to learn and change is not a bad thing.

While there are certain criminals that I think should never be paroled or released, this isn't a bad thing.

Still coddling your delicate nature with the following false presumptions:

1. Those imprisoned are, but for lacking educational opportunities, just as interested in being civilized citizens as you are. False.

2. Those imprisoned are lacking knowledge that, were that knowledge to be made available to them, at no cost to them, but at great cost to the payers of taxes, they, the imprisoned, would surely avail themselves of this opportunity to educate themselves and satisfy their yearnings to become civilized citizens. False.

3. Those imprisoned are not already educated to the knowing of what they have chosen to value knowing, and have not chosen to not know whatever they have determined, by their own criteria, what has no value to them to know. False.

4. Those "isn't necessarily a bad thing" devices will be appreciated as they are delivered and not utilized for any purpose other than the "not necessarily a bad thing" intended purpose. False.

5. Those imprisoned need something different than the experience of being imprisoned to be inspired to yearn to learn to become civilized citizens, so, we, the civilized citizens should be enthusiastic about whatever something different is implemented. False.

6. The nature of those imprisoned is no different than the nature of those not imprisoned, thus, what you, presuming you are not imprisoned, would appreciate, and use to improve your capabilities of being the civilized citizen this providing of objects is touted as being for, will surely be appreciated and utilized by those imprisoned in the same manner. False.

7. You are an idiot. True.

On it's face it seems to be pretty innocuous. But consider that all of these devices have communications links baked into the hardware. WiFi, Bluetooth... all of it can be used for communication. And communication by and between inmates is a bad thing. The range of Bluetooth is such that it could even be used to communicate outside the jail with a bad actor who's got a halfway decent antenna (made from a Pringles can)...

Again, I'd give them educational materials in the form of paper and stubby pencil that's collected and counted as they prepare to leave the classroom. Any missing? Unaccounted for? Time for a strip search.

Never trust an inmate.
