Another Soda Tax Bombs

  • Philadelphia set the bar last year when officials added a 1.5 cents-an-ounce to sweetened beverages. It only brought in $78.8 million…$13 million less than they city hoped.

    You mean to tell me that when you charge a lot more for pop that people won’t buy it? I’m SHOCKED! Not really. I mean, as a loyal Diet Coke consumer, the tax wouldn’t have pushed me away. But come on. You shouldn’t really rely on a tax on something that people can avoid.
Prickwrinkle was not only below expectations, Cook County was losing all sorts of sales tax revenue as people did all of their shopping elsewhere. And we'll just say, should a statewide soda tax ever appear, we're close enough to Wisconsin and/or Indiana to make that shopping trip more than worth it.

I changed my habits when they enacted the soda tax, they are still losing taxes with me. Because I now continue to use my buying power else where. Why to go Chicago and Cook County.

NOT being reported is that Pepsi (and their CEO who is a bank for Hillary), are doing
major job cuts in Chicago Quaker Oats office on beverage side due to losses from the sugar tax fiasco;
Big money jobs & pensions being cut; they are hiding it from the media by putting the people on a ”severance leave of absence’ , until after the fall elections, but People already let go...

I remember smuggling my soda and beer into IOWA to avoid the five cent a can recycling fee.
Sixty cents a twelve pack added up quick.
Two bucks a twelve pack is a damn good reason to make a run for the border.

Busted by the FBI hauling soda across state lines
to avoid tax. Jails filled with grannies and grandpas
doing side hustles. People will do strange things to
move up from cat food.
Things are so bad in America that Amazon has the
"Camper Force," a rag-tag army of senior citizens
using R.V.'s and serving as a migrant work force
for El Jeffe, picking up the slack during seasonal
peak demand times.
It's brutal: they work 10 to 12 hour days and Amazon
has urine color charts in the restrooms to suggest
more hydration (ya see, senior citizens tend to drop
over when dehydrated or electrolytes are off).
Yes, we've come to this in America. Pray you die in
your sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I changed when the city enacted the bottled water tax.
I shop in friendly, clean suburban stores.
I gas up in cheaper tax areas.
Why would I shop in Sh!tcago and Crook County.
By the way have any of you seen Joe Berrios new commercials where he's slamming the NRA? He got ripped off by whomever he paid to write and produce those. They make no sense. I mean come on Joe, who cares that Fritz had a donor that at one time donated to the NRA? And Joe, what does banning assault rifles have to do with the Crook County Assessor? I get that your chairman of the democratic party in crook county but that is a figure head that has no power, anywhere!
Haven't shopped in Chicago in 20 years.
I'm close to the expressway and have family in Hammond.
Free parking, lower taxes.
I buy only produce in Chicago.
Lettuce, tomatoes etc. don't hold up to well over time.
I'm surprised Philly pulled in that amount. It's easier to avoid a BS tax like that by shopping outside a city's limit than traveling to another county.
I still do a majority of my shopping in Indiana and make sure to flip off the 'Welcome to Illinois' sign on the way back.
SSC, the liberals are smarter than you think. They win either way. If the tax increases revenue, then they win, if it doesn't then they can say the tax prevented the community from drinking soda which was causing them to be fat. Win either way.
Off topic question. The Sun Times had a series of articles about a state senator who owed thousands in rent to the Board of Ed. and had also kept a government owned life sized statue of a half naked slave girl in the office. Does anyone know what happened to her?
>"Get rid of all those high salary made up jobs for friends and family of those crooked politicians."
How, exactly?
We have a state-wise tax crisis, in part, because politicians (and administrators) add unnecessary personnel. It's not limited to Chicago.
My wife and I were returning from a weekend stay in the Wis Dells when we stopped at a place called Woodman's. It's an employee owned and run store. Just went in to pick up some beer and ended up doing some grocery shopping. Spent around $100 and the tax on that? 0.15 cents.
It's about 1 hr away from the house but we ended up going there quite often. Didn't mind the drive ( got us out of Il for the day) and gas is cheaper up there so it is a win, win for us.
And the reality that more of my pay check was staying in my pocket rather than going to the city, county and state of Il in the form of taxes made it ever so sweeter.
Old school pocket picking politicians, (I realize the redundancy there), at least knew, for the most part, to stick to the nickle and dime method; not so these lunatics.
A penny an ounce seems to them as not much, because applying basic math is only of interest to them when calculating their swag totals.
What's that older saying: Steal a million from one victim and the alarms sound loudly, steal a buck from a million victims and it's an accounting error........
