Fifteen Cars

This would seem to be a big deal:
  • Hey SCC,

Haven't seen much in the press about Hertz getting ripped off for 15 vehicles in a single incident. The cars have been surfacing on the west side all weekend with 8 or 10 being recovered already. No info if they're being used in shootings, but most have out of state plates.
Haven't heard much about this either, but we found a quick mention in the Tribune:
  • Oak Park police are investigating the overnight theft of 15 cars from a local rental business.

According to police, an employee at Hertz, 629 Madison St., arrived to work Thursday morning at about 7:30 a.m., and found the front glass window of the front door broken. Inside the business, the employee discovered the key storage box had been forced open and the keys taken, police said.

The lock to the rear security gate of the parking lot had also been cut, and 15 cars were reportedly missing, the employee told police.
It's so generous of the fine Oak Park businesses to supply Chicago yutes with wheels for school, job interviews, felonious assaults and smash-and-grabs.

Good old Oak Park. You live next to the jungle folks. Remember the woman held at gunpoint at Augusta and Austin years ago? She arrived home one night in Oak Park. After she was assaulted in her garage she was marched across the magic boundary line into Austin where fortunately for her a very good shot from a CPD officer put dog down, saved her life and made society a little safer for everyone? Auto theft is no big deal even if is ten or more or so.

Oak park is and will always be a liberal suburb, the police department is not very hands on even though they border one of the high crime districts. I’m not an advocate of aggressive, proactive police work anymore, but I won’t criticize anyone that still wants to be the police. If you make a legitimate stop, document it! Taking the extra few minutes and articulate exactly why you made the stop. If you are unable to do so, either you should not have made the stop in the first place, or you were never the police to begin with.

The loudest cry babies about ISRs are the officers that never did any proactive police work in the first place.

They blamed a sluggish economy for the downfall.

One possibility.

There are several other possibilities.

They are, after all, rental vehicles from a common vehicle rental company. A nation wide common vehicle rental company. Renting common vehicles.

The chop shop parts purpose is one possible reason for the theft of 15 of these common vehicles in a single incident.

Still, the recovery of some, not all, presents other possibilities.....

You may be onto something there. My nephew worked for Hertz, and "some" of the employees were on a mission to scam, steal and hustle in ways I wouldn't be able to think of. If a potential customer entered the store with his "friends", they'd most likely look to see where the key box was located and how it was secured. Other employees knew how to steal and scam from the cash register bu would only be fired after being caught. The company doesn't want any "discrimminashuuuun" suits.

Chicago and the liberal Cook County suburbs have become like that episode of the old Batman TV show, where the Joker (or was it Penguin) becomes Commissioner of Gotham P.D., and wouldn't you know, the Gotham police are given orders to stand down and let crime get out of control, ignoring bank robberies and armed robberies while ticketing citizens for jaywalking or traffic.

It's literally that bad right now. Corrupt criminal politicians have regulated and scrutinized the Chicago police into near paralysis.

none of these companies likely carry theft insurance. they are probably self insured. much more cost effective. the reality is that now and then rental cars get stolen. it is unusual for 15 to get stolen at once but cars get stolen all the time.

one might think that the rental car companies would secure the keys a little better given that modern cars are a lot harder to steal without a key. But it probably has not been an issue in the past so they did not want to go to the bother or spend the money on better security for the keys.

incidentally, a lot of places have turned off their alarm systems because cities have been charging them for false alarms so they figure it is more cost effective not to pay for the false alarms.

it's not fair to blame the victims for this kind of thing.

it does seem likely there was some inside information here.

Talk about a nice job, they used to have a guy that would come out anytime, anywhere to sign complaints. He would show up in court and write a letter of compliment to the superintendent too! They used to give out pens and calendars in court and at the station. Some companies would give a reward for finding and calling them with car info. A lot of off duty POs used to work security at their storage lots too. The last dealing that I had with them, they had to wait for thirty days after a rental agreement expired to report the vehicle stolen? Too many lawyers........

Someone yelled hoodlums had just entered Oak Park and several people standing on Austin and Madison shooed them back across Austin and back into Chicago.
