U of C Shooting

  • A University of Chicago police officer shot and seriously wounded a 21-year-old student who charged an officer with a metal pipe near the South Side campus late Tuesday, authorities said.

The shooting happened off campus just before 10:15 p.m. in the Hyde Park neighborhood, an area patrolled by both U. of C. and Chicago police officers.

Three U. of C. police officers responding to a call of a burglary in the 5300 block of South Kimbark Avenue encountered a man — later identified as a student — breaking car and apartment windows with a long metal pipe, university officials said in an email to students.

The officers ordered the student to drop the pipe, but he refused and charged at the officer in an alley, university President Robert Zimmer and Provost Daniel Diermeier said in the email.

One of the officers fired his weapon, hitting the student in the shoulder, according to the university. The student was initially taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, authorities said.
Officer is fine physically. Can't wait to see how the overly libtarded Hyde Park populace handles this one .... non-CPD protecting them shoots a student assailant.

Having worked here for years, I can tell you exactly how this will play out:
"From the desk of President Zimmer: We are going to form an impartial panel to hear all aspects of this case to determine what we could have done to have prevented this occurrence."
If former UCPD Chief Marlon Lynch were here, he would likely offer the officer involved in the shooting 'another job working for the university in another capacity.' We've seen this sort of thing play out all the time here. Back door'd by the civilian deans, with little to no support from our own executives within our agency. We're just waiting to see what Chief Rainey will say (or do) about the fallout that is sure to come.

I had to laugh at the “student’s parents were notified” line in the press release. It sounds as if the school/police department contacted them. Sorry, but this offender is 21 years old. Last time I checked, 21 is an adult. I will play the race card here...I seriously doubt any family member would have been notified if the offender was some thug from Englewood.

Here’s the video from the BWC the press won’t show (they only show squad car footage). Anyways, this works all fine and dandy (the “tactical retreat” they’re boasting about), but what about when you run backwards into a lane of traffic, getting seriously injured or killed, or trip and fall. You know, one’s natural reaction is to brace themselves with their hand(s). What happens when you have a gun in said hand? Oh, that’s right, you have an accidental discharge and/or lose control of a handgun and, in consequence, give the assailant a nearly defenseless target and possibly upgrading his armament to your nice handgun. Then the snowflakes will laugh at your death saying, “undertrained cops can’t even keep control of their own gun.”

Glad the copper is alright, but this job is just a shitshow. Too bad shithead didn’t die of lead poisoning. Two good citizens interviewed said the officer didn’t need to and shouldn’t have shot. Stay fetal until the snowflakes reap the rewards of their ignorance.

First, glad that the 'officer is fine physically.'

Also SCC has, as usual, another interesting point. "Can't wait to see how the overly libtarded Hyde Park populace handles this one .... non-CPD protecting them shoots a student assailant."

Is there any correlation between a mentally challenged individual wielding a bat vs. a pipe threatening law enforcement, summoned to the scene, in these two incidents?
Interesting, but I'm sure they won't be judged by the same litmus test.

look at this idiot, how many video games did he watch and the copper says he is a mental, with a helmet and gloves what character is he trying to portray! A mental what was his GPA and act score to get into that kollege? Was he a quota merit appointee? free ride? So mom and dad send their son now a man to this school knowing he is a mental case is he off his meds? There lies the problem, we are dealing with so many mental now, friends are pharmacists and others are school counselors as soon as they are having any issues with kids parents are called (many in grade schools) and the parents take kids to doctors who prescribe Ritalin and other substances to "clam them down!" Pharmacist friend says they are filling untold amounts of RX for kids, more than ever before and on the other end of the "spectrum" as they call it many women are being put on zoloft and prozac along with some men!

So what meds was this wacko on! many of us older coppers and others that read this very blog know that many years ago when your parent was called to a school, they gave you therapy and sometimes took you to a doctor for injuries you received after they kicked your ass at home, then your cured of this future dilemma, parents back in that day not long ago would be "doctors" today knowing what we needed to be cured! Thew kids today say "we are bored" remember if your ever told your parents that years ago? So quickly you would have a mop in your hand, told to clean, wash the car,cut the grass if you talked back then gave you a broom "up your ass" parenting is a foreign concept to many of the snowflake generation!

Good friend is manager of home depot told me Sunday is like amusement park day there, parents bring their kids "shopping" and the kids run all over the store some getting hurt, look for example at the power tool area where everything is strapped down, saws covered because parents let their kids play with them like toys and when kid gets hurt they yes "we are going to sue!" Lastly we were taught to respect law enforcement, parents, teachers and help elders and respect females now today parenting is gone, so many kids feel it is "me first" and the parents melt when their child yells at them, and what is this shit with calling your parent by their first name snowflakes, parents are not to be the child's playmate friends we are there to be mentors and the way many parent your raising a generation of future idiots with absolutely no conceptual reality!

rant/off thank you SCC!

Please only call U of C when police are needed. The department, especially 002nd District officers will appreciate it. I would also hope they should respond faster to their own campus, especially since CPD has to handle pretty much all of their nonsense on their very campus and grounds, despite the fact they are sworn officers.

Your right about that backing up nonsense,we are trained to go into the fight, wait a gosh darn minute in that parkland school shooting was that copper practicing "tactical retreat?" So this example means we need to retreat from a dangerous weapon right? So using that nonsense if we see someone with a knife and we back up and he kills someone in front of us but we retreated we will be OK right? I know this is insane!

On another related note the year was 1996 Archer Ave I tried that tactical retreat in a parking lot with a mental and truthfully I fell backward hitting my head on cement got a concussion still crazy today but be careful backing up you may be the victim! Better way is don't get out of your vehicle, drive by and wave at crazy man in hockey mask if asked why you did nothing you thought he watched hockey game with mask,or was practicing cross country skiing with the pole! Let the liberals and snowflakes sort it out!

the funny thing is the university put out a notice to all students about the "violent crime" everywhere around the campus! what kind of people do this? Nope cant ask googleme he is tongue tied and sworn not to release offenders descriptions isn't that right sir?

100% true. Imagine if the officer had fallen backwards (he went pretty far in his 'retreat' to follow snowflake training procedures), or if the officer had been set upon from the side/rear if he had an accomplice in the area? He was also trained to only fire one shot as far as I can tell from the Fibune story.

Anyone who says that firearm shouldn’t have been used should be put in the same situation so that the the moron could first hand see what the consequences would be. Some good video from the scene. U of C has bodycams and car cameras.

Kid was obviously having a mental breakdown, but he was advancing with pipe and cop did back up and try to handle situation non violently.

Be warned after being shot the "mental" uses some naughty language.

Some idiots at the University calling for Campus cops to be disbanded or disarmed.

Just search twitter. My guess is officer will be OK and community will accept shooting as necessary. A big part of the reason the areas that U of C Police patrol are relatively low crime is because of that patrolling.

Now if the cop had been armed with a taser, or a bean bag or a Star Trek phaser he could have handled it differently, but he wasn't so..........

Only in America has the good and evil line been blurred so badly.

If the officer tells you to drop the pipe, you drop the pipe (after "allegedly" breaking windows, property. Kind of like an admission of guilt.

So, now, the original bad guy, who of course, nobody wants in their neighborhood, is the "victim" of the "awful, gun-wielding po-lice" if I'm correct.

The cop is portrayed now as the bad guy and the thug/gang member/perp "turning himself around" is the victim, of course.

The demonization of authority, including police, parents, etc has proliferated in the past several decades, to the point of right is wrong and wrong is right.

It's in your schools (indoctrination by teachers), your media, ads on TV, even sadly in the workplace, the churches and the very law of a once great country.

Its comforting to know that Northwestern's Center on Wrongful Convictions Bluhm Legal Clinic will represent the supposedly super intelligent U of C student. Northwestern's legal services address: erroneous witness identification, false and coerced confessions, official misconduct, inadequate legal defense, false forensic evidence, perjury and incentivized testimony (snitches). Legal costs and the expected civil payout will be passed onto fellow U of C students in the form of a tuition increase. Hopefully Norhtwestern law can stick it to the U of C and give their finances a taste of social justice reforms courtesy of the Wildcats. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

Note: The U of C law school " The Exoneration Project" wanted to be the lead Counsel suing the University of Chicago for civil rights abuses. Clinical teacher Jon Loevy made the wise decision not to sue his university realizing his money making scheme or exoneration project my be defunded and ultimately disbanded by certain retaliation from the Board of Regents. No exoneration project equals no opportunity to make side money for the law firm bearing his name in the form of 30% of the final judgement and associated legal fees from those business leads generated through university sponsored legal clinics.

If the officer intentionally aimed for the kid's shoulder, mama should be extremely grateful to him that her son ended up at a hospital instead of the morgue.

Mother of student shot by U. of C. police had worries about his mental health

Again; This is a person in the midst of crisis, like a person who is having a heart attack, and our police officers … were so afraid of this scary kid that they had to try to kill him,” Peltz, who’s from Boston, said.

Four faculty members published a letter in the campus newspaper Thursday calling for a broader and deeper discussion of campus police.

“This is a private police force, it’s the second largest in the state and it’s likely among the largest private police forces in the country. So the role of a private police force in the community is something that deserves to be interrogated: what role should they play?” said Reuben Jonathan Miller, an assistant professor in the School of Social Service Administration.

I’m glad you’re alive today to tell that story. Sorry, to hear about your concussion. To you and the other poster who commented, I agree with what you say. It’s just crazy to me and I don’t understand what is expected of us. We are expected to face a crazy situation with so many variables and make a split second decision. That decision must result in a happy ending or else we are crucified. The department has a herbal order on cowardice that needs to be removed. Honestly, the argument can be made that our own policy on cowardice forces officers to act in a way that stops a threat with deadly force, if necessary. If the good citizens don’t want that, fine, we will conduct “tactical retreats,” al the time. The result must be that we are absolved of guilt when the assailant(s) move on to injuring and killing other pedestrians.

I feel pathetic for adopting this mentality on one hand but on the other hand there is no other logical or sane way to respond. I’ll continue to assist other officers in 10-1S/emergency, but my police action ends there. I refuse to get crucified for these snowflakes. Jesus sacrificed himself for the sins of man. However, I’m not Jesus nor will I pretend to be.

Stay safe, healthy and employed in these crazy times.

(110 ILCS 1020/1) (from Ch. 144, par. 1951)
Sec. 1. The Board of Trustees of a private college or private university, may appoint persons to be members of a campus police department. The Board shall assign duties...

The City did establish the College's patrol boundaries, but they are not "Special Policemen" under the MCC.
