- A political and emotional brush fire is smoldering within a grieving Chicago Fire Department over a national anthem protest that marred a charity football game dedicated to the memory of two fallen Chicago heroes.
Camron McGarity, an African-American firefighter, kneeled while the Star Spangled Banner was being played before the CFD Blaze faced off against the Chicago Police Department’s Enforcers last Saturday in the eighth annual “First Responders Bowl.”
A photo of the protest clearly shows the firefighter, wearing the No. 7 jersey, kneeling on the sidelines while players on either side stood at attention dressed in bright red jerseys and matching red pants.
Fired Chicago Police Superintendent-turned-mayoral-challenger Garry McCarthy, who was at the game at Brother Rice High School on the Southwest Side, said the solo protest generated plenty of “grumbling” among the crowd of roughly 1,000, in part, because the game was dedicated to the memory of slain 18th District Commander Paul Bauer and former dive team member Juan Bucio, who died during a Memorial Day rescue on the Chicago River.
CFD is making noise about banning him from the team, and since it's a club sport (not an officially sanctioned CFD organization), we imagine they're completely within their charters to do so. It doesn't make him any less of a dick for being inappropriate at a moment meant to honor a deceased firefighter diver.

How sick of a person, let a lone a first responder, to do something like this in this setting. Both sides of the field know they too could die at work every day, while also memorializing the recent fallen, and this clown does this under the false narrative that the police kill people for no good reason? How fucked up is that? How long will this lie go on? Or be tolerated?

There’s this group of people who have some hateful, twisted, made up perception that there’s a overtly mistreatment of criminals who fight lawful arrest. That’s their opinion, that’s the opinion and beliefs of Rahm and Special Ed as well as any other mayoral lackey that wants to keep their job.
I guess if someone is going to start inciting discontent among others for whatever supposed injustices at roll calls or on/off duty representations, the City has to make it clear that such is, as Rahm puts it, “offensive and not who we are” and dish out discipline those who practice these acts.

Making noise is all the CFD does when it comes to discipline. They seldom take any action. Double stand when it comes to CFD and CPD
Please say some prayers for the firefighter who recently comitted suicide. I personally have been there in 2014. The burden of the media and politics of the job is a serious hinderance. Please pray for his family.

Well seeing as thou the team is not really sanctioned by the CFD he can’t sue them.
Also seeing as that it is a privately run sports club they should be able to let whoever
they want in or out of the club.
IMO what he did was and is totally despicable.
But seeing as that he did this on his own time and that the team isn’t really part of the CFD.
Maybe the same should go the same for ALL the other menebers that are being investigated
for the FB post with Ald Arena. In fact seeing as Santiago isn’t doing anything to him as he was
OFF DUTY, doe s that mean that EVERYONE who has ever been disciplined for an OFF DUTY act will now have their record whipped clean and reimbursed if any money was lost.....ija

Thank you to the Chicago Fire Department Blaze Football team for another great year.
I have been supporting this team since its inception 9 years ago. This is a great fundraiser against our rivals the CPD Enforcers, which benefits our Gold Badge and Gold Star widows and orphans, it’s very competitive and a lot of fun, and I hope that we can continue this yearly fundraiser.
I was appalled and embarrassed of the classless behavior of one of our members this past Saturday. This game was about honoring our Line of Duty Death Brothers Paul Bauer, CPD and Juan Bucio, CFD and their families for their bravery and commitment to the City of Chicago.
This was not the place to make a self-serving, attention drawing, pot stirring statement. This person has not made this statement at any other games this year. He chose this game for this classless act for his own personal gain.
I apologize to all the CPD and CFD players, their families and friends who were upset by this selfish act.

His kneeling is an overtly racist statement. How will he perform his job, which is to protect property (from fire damage) and rescue, if he perceives some of the people needing his help to be his oppressors? Not exactly the person I want to show up to rescue my child (we're white) from a burning building. He just might decide the world is better off with fewer of his perceived enemies and not exert himself to help.
Racism has no place in rescue work. He should be fired.
