Gun Turn-In Funds Gun Safety
- Guns Save Life loves Chicago’s gun buybacks. Three times in the past dozen years or so, the scrappy Illinois gun rights group has sold rusty junk to Chicago’s taxpayers, then used the proceeds to send young people to an NRA summer shooting camp. Saturday, Guns Save Life pulled it off again.
Yes, we took our junk deep into the heart of Rahm’s Paradise by the Lake and brought home perfectly good cash cards. Not only that, but a Chicago Police Department sergeant banned me from ever again participating in a gun buyback.
Wait, a sergeant did what?
- And meet Sgt. Dickerson, the guy picking up a box full of guns. Sgt. Dickerson stopped the whole process when he overheard that I had eleven guns. He pulled me outside and said, and I quote, “This event is for the neighborhood, not outsiders.”
He didn’t know my name or where I lived. However, as a white person, I was in the minority in the lower income, African-American neighborhood. He continued: “We’ll take two of those, but you’re gonna have to take the rest back to your car. Or you can take them all home with you.” So I got my two $100 VISA cards. As I walked out, I stopped to take a photo of the table where they worked to identify make, model, caliber and serial numbers of the guns turned in. Sgt. Dickerson didn’t like that.
“YOU! Come with me!” he barked. We walked outside. He explained that I could not take photos inside. I replied: “But this is a public place and a public event. Nobody has a reasonable expectation of privacy here.” “No, this is a private event and the people in there don’t want their pictures taken,” he gruffly shot back at me.
“So what about the TV cameras?” I asked calmly. “They have permission! Look. You cannot come back to one of these ever again. Don’t ever let me catch you coming back again,” Sgt. Dickerson said sternly. I wondered if this is what black folks felt like back when cops explained their local Sundown laws to them. The look on my face must have expressed my thoughts clearly, or Sgt. Dickerson had ESP. “Or what?” I thought. After a pause, he continued: “If I catch you at one of these events again, you will be turned away.”
So if this was a private event, why was CPD there collecting guns? Who exactly provided the authorization? It was broadcast on television, the media covered it and CPD accepted guns for inventory, that certainly seems like someone is using public funds and public employees, and as such DICKerson's authority is a bit more....constrained, especially in banning public movement at an event open to the public.

The gun buy back program is a "no questions asked" eventually. People, regardless of color or ethnicity, can turn in guns without being harrassed and get a financial reward for doing so. Again the city publicized the event and says one gun one gift card. It does not have any other qualifications?

This now effects any other person bringing any weapon in for the reward.

This is a perfect opportunity to sue and file a beef. if you don't you have no one to blame but your self. i understand the job is as bad as its probably ever been. i do think a lot of it is because you guys do not stand up for yourselves and will not stick together. You see nothing wrong with illegally detaining someone based solely on the color of their skin? You see nothing wrong with different laws for whites and blacks? You see nothing wrong with arbitrarily enforcing imaginary rules rather than abiding by the clearly defined rules of the gun turn-in event? You see nothing wrong with banning someone from future gun turn-in events based on their skin color? Interesting. These programs are not about getting guns off the streets or ending gun violence. They are about people taking mostly non-functioning guns that were never on the streets and trading them for free money. That's it. They have no impact on gun violence. They have no net effect on "the community," aside from a little quick cash. Sgt Dickerson violated this man's rights, racially profiled him, and refused him the same opportunities as the other people there, all with no authority to do so. Common sense would be to have the NRA, with the enthusiastic approval and sanction of the applicable city, county and state authorities, contracted to conduct a combined evaluation (for function & safety), appraisal (for value), and recommendation(s) for sale or disposal, on each object so defined as a firearm, with the option provided of donation(s) of same to a specified purpose agreed upon by all parties concerned.
Those desiring the disposal, and destruction, of their property, regardless of value, functionality, and, thus, utility, would state this and their desire would be honored.
Those with functioning brains would have the opportunity to learn the estimated value of their property and, perhaps, be advised of all those lovely things one should know before attempting to sell said property.
Those who determine, after being advised of potential absence of safe functionality, with, perhaps, a ball park estimate of cost to return to safe functionality, may make their decision accordingly.
So, as far as common sense goes, there may well be much common about your comment, but it does not make good sense.

exactly my point. Nowhere in your fancy response did you address the original poster's topic, so your really comparing apples to oranges. He/she implied that a copper was "looking the other way" if they allow someone to do a walk-in gun turn-in without asking for an FOID card because "If you dont have a FOID....you cant handle a gun. My first thought is the sergeant thought here comes a suburban guy with 11 old guns taking advantage of the $100 turn in. Which is what happens all the time at these events. On one hand these events are good in the long run because there is 11 guns that will never hit the street no matter how many years go by. On the other hand, it kind of feels like people take advantage of the event. However, the whole point of the event is to get guns off the street, no matter what street in any neighborhood of any city or state. Which also means these events are taking the guns out of peoples homes so the guns are not laying around to get taken by punk family members or taken by burglars, eventually being sold on the streets.
I just hope that the sergeant asked this person if he had a foid card before he let him walk with 9 guns. Otherwise, i don't look at what the sergeant did as a racist thing, I look at it as a stupid thing if he let the person leave with 9 guns and no foid card. That's a crime.

You don't look at it as a racist thing? Why would he think the white guy is "some suburban guy with 11 old guns taking advantage of the $100 turn in?" White guy... must be from the suburbs. That's pretty racist. The black guy with 8 guns wasn't hassled for "taking advantage" of anything. He singled out the white guy and told him the event wasn't for "outsiders" and that it was for "the neighborhood." Wake up and see the blatant racism.

This foid card thing is where it gets seemingly messy, yet it does not have to be.
Whoever the fuck is trying to make the point that relies upon the acceptance of this foid card shit is flawed in basis and intent. God Given Rights are not granted by government; any government. Period.

Since your comment indicates, with little to no wiggle room, that you also have no base objection to this foid card shit, the common sense you refer to being to use officer discretion wisely, albeit by not attempting to enforce, first by inquiry, this foid card shit, still wafts the same aroma.

Found out COPA would not take a report because Sgt is a supervisor. IAD has started investigation. It is being pursued.
