Downtown-to-O'Hare Tunnel?
- Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk’s vision of autonomous vehicles that would zip back and forth at more than 100 mph in tunnels between Chicago’s Loop and O’Hare International Airport has drawn both interest and skepticism from transportation and engineering experts.
“We’re scratching our heads as to whether this is truly ready for completion,” said Joe Schwieterman, professor and director at DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development. “… This could be a big victory, but it could be a big risk.”
“The word I keep hearing is ‘stunned,’” said a source familiar with the proposals, speaking of reactions from industry professionals. “They couldn’t believe a city as powerful and conservative as the city of Chicago would agree to a fantasy.”
The city of Chicago has selected Musk’s The Boring Co. to build a high-speed express train to O’Hare. Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration picked Boring’s bid over a more conventional high-speed rail proposal. There are a lot of “ifs” about the Musk project, which Emanuel has promised would be financed by The Boring Co. and not the public. Emanuel said the city was taking a bet on Musk, “a guy who doesn’t like to fail — and his resources.”
Musk is supposedly financing the entire project...with the agreement that he gets all the profit. So where is Chicago's financial upside? Taxes on ticket sales? Increased tourist/convention spending?

All one needs to know is this:
There are three (3), reasons the professional politician does anything.
1. Because it must be done and, at a minimum, done well enough to not induce murderous intent, followed by action, against the politician. Thus, garbage must be collected, streets reasonably paved, water must flow, fires must be extinguished, criminals must be held noticably in check, etc. The essentials must be, if only barely, provided.
2. Get money. Lots of money. Via the power to tax. Use this money thusly gotten to buy votes, by buying those who can effectively persuade voters to vote for you, the incumbent, career politician. This includes, but is not limited to, staffing all essential governmental departments with those who accept the obligation to get the politician money, votes or both. Also, the obvious entitlements hustles, including the generous doling out of tax funds to the usual hands out crowd. Also, projects contracted out to private concerns glean both kickback political donations from the companies and also their employees, etc. Thus the money needed to pay for persuading the needed quantities of voters to vote for the incumbent are procured.
3. Siphon as much of those tax dollars through the useful conduits, and there will be all that extra, personal use swag to buy those perks that the career politician considers having worked to earn, as work, to the career politician, is solely conning the suckers, aka, the voters.
So, all efforts to understand the why of anything a politician does, using non politician thinking, are in vain.
They are crooked, bent and like being that very much.
So where is the money coming from for this joke. How many Billions will this cost to save 1/2 hour from airport to downtown. Most important question is will the be a gun free zone?

For a guy who doesn't like to fail he has a stellar track record of running a company for 15 years that has not made a profit. Reusable boosters will save launch customers billions of dollars. Secondly, Tesla builds incredible cars. It’s taking longer and costing more money to get production ramped for the new Tesla Model 3. But make no mistake, Tesla is working through these production bottlenecks. In regards to the Boring Company. Musks new tunnel boring machine can bore much much faster than any existing tunnel bore technology and the goal is to reduce tunneling costs by a factor of 10. So Musk is no con man. A pioneer yes....someone who pushes the technology envelope yes. And yes, you can also buy a flamethrower from the Boring Company. Maybe CPD could use them for crowd control?

We have money for the schools. They get 52% of our property taxes and each year ask for the maximum increase allowed by law and get it.

Just doing napkin math, I can prove this isn’t going to work. Using the infrastructure we already have more intelligently would improve transit times to and from ORD. Adding some extra track on the Blue Line and more intelligently routing trains could cut travel times. Leveraging the Metra North Central Line is also an option.
A fricking tunnel? Is Elon going to cut it with lasers? Stick to repackaging 60 year old rocket technology and selling it back to the government. His car building venture is going tits up because he isn’t willing to learn from the best practices of American, German, or Japanese auto manufacturers who have over 100 years of experience building cars (sometimes profitably) at scale.

Absent from the announcement was answer to who obtains the right-of-way rights for Musk. Who acquires those right-of-way rights below other people's property when Super Tube extends beneath privately-owned property? Who has legal liability for damages payments due to subsidence and property-damage due to tunneling, and later for adverse affects due to Tesla-like (fire-prone?) rail-car malfunctions? This is a PR stunt, some nice headlines for 9.5 during a horrible election campaign.
