Wilson Granted Retrial
- A Cook County judge on Thursday overturned the murder conviction of a man who claimed disgraced former Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge and his subordinates tortured him into confessing to the slayings of two police officers nearly 40 years ago.
Jackie Wilson, 57, alleged he was beaten by Burge and his crew until he admitted being present when his now-deceased brother, Andrew, fatally shot Chicago police officers Richard O'Brien and William Fahey in 1982.
Judge William Hooks tossed Wilson’s confession and overturned his conviction. Wilson had been serving a life sentence in prison. “Your life matters, and yes, even a guilty person’s life matters,” the judge said. “All rights matter, the rights of the good, bad and ugly all count.”
The FOP makes noise, but little in the way of action:
- In a statement on its website, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police blasted the commission as “an unconstitutional body” comprised of “many commissioners with a decidedly anti-police bias.” The FOP also chided Hooks’ decision, saying the families of Fahey and O’Brien will be forced to “relive the night of the crime and the possibility that this killer may have another chance at garnering his freedom.”
“While the FOP does not in any way condone police misconduct, the notion that Jackie Wilson was abused in custody is virtually non-existent, and we are extremely disappointed in Judge Hooks’ ruling,” according to the statement.
Judge Hooks has been nothing but a disappointment for years, but he finally got a "social justice" case where he could put his bleeding-heart credentials on full display. Fahey and O'Brien, along with their families, will never rest in peace or receive closure due to the fabulist creations of the Peoples Law Office, Flint Taylor and the anti-police leftists.

This is an example of the contempt and bias that exists against Chicago Police Officers. It should also serve as evidence and an example of the Reality, that there is no such thing as Life Without Parole. Jackie Wilson was and is a dangerous human being, who will in the current environment surely be released, and rewarded with a huge amount of money. The elimination of the Death Penalty was a mistake. As long as someone is incarcerated and alive, there is a possibility for release. Ryan, Blago and Quinn, all had a roll in eliminating the Death Penalty. The release of Jackie Wilson is a very sad and dangerous moment for our society. The efforts and ultimately the value of the lives of police officers and citizens has been diminished by this act. And sadly this reinforces what I have said before on this blog: "Your life has less value if you reside in Cook County, than it would elsewhere in the State of Illinois."

Either way, when the person who murdered two Chicago Police Officers has more supporters in the court room than the victims family’s there is a serious problem. It was unacceptable and yesterday I was embarrassed to be a Chicago Police Officer.

Ummmm......I dont want to rain on your rant, but the States Attorney’s office has nothing to do with this case now. It is the Special Prosecutor who is responsible for any re-trial which may take place.

That was a bad afternoon and a tough time in Feb of 1982. Most of us who were on the job then have long since retired and the officers on the job today don't understand our loss and how it effected every Chicago police officer at that time. The Wilson brothers killed Fahey & O'Brien as they had just returned from the funeral of a rookie cop named Jim Doyle. Unknown to Fahey & O'Brien was that the Wilson brothers were planning an escape for the killer of Officer Doyle, who was being held at Cook County Jail/Hospital. The Wilson brothers overpowered Fahey & O'Brien on a traffic stop at 81st & Morgan and executed them on the street at 2 in the afternoon. It was a scary time for Chicago and its police. Jane Byrne ponied up some cash to help with a reward. The district officers and detectives who at that time were working out of the old Burnside station worked nonstop to find these monsters.... So, over 36 years later, the dust has settled and everyones life moved on. They have been forgotten, except by their family and loved ones. I guess, that is what made the police different from others. We stood for the victims of crime and violence and we would never forget our own. It is sad to hear that the police failed to come out to look into the eyes of Judge Hooks as he gave his abominable decision. The hardworking and dedicated police officers have again been betrayed by the judge, the court system, and our own who were conspicuously absent......

PPO Doyle was killed the same night an academy classmate killed herself; Upon returning from her funeral (the same time as Doyle's) I learned about Fahey and O'Brien's murders. Years later, I managed to get a tape recording of the citizen calling for help for the two policemen shot at 8108 S. Morgan. I remember the pain in the voice of the first supervisor on the scene, and anguished looks on the faces of police and city staff at LCM. I was not present for the manhunt and arrest of the Wilson Brothers. I find it impossible to believe that ANY of he police personnel involved in the manhunt would have compromised the case by doing ANYTHING unprofessional to either of the arrestees.
Obviously, society has turned a page and decided to lionize the criminal element and those who defend them, while vilifying their police.
RIP Lady Justice. RIP Rich and Bill. RIP Chicago PD.

When he was up for retention, they made "dump Passarella buttons" "Punch NO #258".... before election day. I still have mine...He ultimately lost his bid for retention that year.. This is what needs to be done for Judge Hooks after this and other horrible rulings. I don't think he is up again until 2022, but the FOP and other suburban Lodges need to remember when that time comes...It can happen......

this case is the ultima case for the Wrongful Conviction Movement. This is the case that was in their crosshairs for years. Think about this for a minute: What greater pleasure can there be for the Wrongful Conviction movement than to have a double Police Officers Murder set free from jail? Wilson's Attorneys have for years moving towards the day that Wilson is set free. A couple of comments about several other posting regarding this case. I did not know about this hearing. If I would have know I would have been there. A suggestion to the FOP: If you want a strong showing than give notice days prior to the hearing. Again, I did not know about this. Second suggestion: The FOP should start a campaign to vote Hooks out of Office now. Go to neighborhood newspapers(Southtown Economist for one) and print adds suggesting that he should be voted out. Neighborhood papers would be cheaper that the two City Wide papers. At the FOP monthly meetings the leadership should remind it's members to get the word out regarding HOOKs. The word should be given out at all the various Police Functions such as all the monthly retiree lunches, retirement parties, and Promotional Parties, etc. There also should be a all out effort from the FOP on it's Facebook Page and monthly magazine to advertise his no vote. I was a Detective working in Homicide when Fahey and O'Brien got killed. I was detailed to Area Two to help out on there regular workload of cases during this time. I remember ALL THE BOSES and the large contingent of News media personnel being present. If the Wilson Brothers were abused EVERYONE could have heard the screams. I don't think you know what you're talking about. I had a different case in Hooks room and I was kicked out. Hooks gave direct order that only people involved in that case were allowed in his courtroom. There was county sgt and sheriff not letting people in. I was there and they wouldn't let me in, and yes, I did check my weapon in downstairs.

Judge Hooks failed to acknowledge that the Wilson brothers were observed by an independent witness that he observed the Wilson brothers murder Fahey and O'Brien.
The new trial is starting on June 21 . Its hard to conceive a judge allowing a retrial for the third time 36 years later. Judge Hooks is no friend of the police ! Channel 2 News did a horrific job of reporting this story and makes a murderer look like an innocent victim. What an absolute sin !

I do not do Facebook, nor do I purchase the Slum-Times. Both are destructive to a normal life, so I want nothing to do with either. Also, FOP is a clown show and the CPMF is led by a con man. All of the judges in the crook county court system answer to the politicians absolutely everyone of them have to appear before their committeeman in order to be slated and become a judge. It is simple as that not one of them are there because of their skills they are there to serve their masters who are the elected and egg really disparage and hate the police as evidenced here. Is the mayor, the crook county commissioner, the crook county president,The alderman, people in the state house, is anybody speaking out against this travesty? Sad day. I was a brand new recruit just after the Fahey and O'Brien murders. The Wilson brothers had planned to jail break a buddy of theirs out of Cook County and were intending to take the officer's uniforms to facilitate the break out. This was a planned and thoroughly thought out plot to murder the officers.
History has it the street deputy at the time ordered all the officers to stand down and take the Wilson brothers alive. I believe this was the first time such cold blooded murders were not killed being taken into custody. Old time detectives were not allowed to interview the brothers with out a gold star outside the door. This was to ensure the integrity of the investigation and to prove to the street officers that convictions could be got legit and without resorting to street justice. Ironic, isn't it? A high profile case where everyone "played by the rules" only to have it stuck up their asses. I have a hazy memory now, but that is what I was told at the time. My partners, all ex-Vietnam vets, were super pissed about the whole situation.They were sure we had screwed the pooch by taking these two scumbags alive. I actually got to sit in on the trial of one of the brothers and I could feel the hate and evil coming off him in waves. How the judge today could not be aware of such evil in his presence is astonishing, however sadly not surprising.
Lesson: you are fucked whether you are legit or not. My old time partners were correct.
However, my friends, you must stay the course. When you act, make sure you are legit. Just don't forget the lubricant when the fucking comes anyway.

Why do they only sue the city and not the county too? The ASA has the final approval on the placing of the charges. Makes no sense that the agency that reviews all the reports and evidence and places the charges is not held responsible

Yesterday’s support by CPD for the Fahey and O’Brien family’s was both sad and embarrassing.
I don't think you know what you're talking about. I had a different case in Hooks room and I was kicked out. Hooks gave direct order that only people involved in that case were allowed in his courtroom. There was county sgt and sheriff not letting people in. I was there and they wouldn't let me in, and yes, I did check my weapon in downstairs.
Well that’s interesting and confusing cause I was sitting in the room and there was a mix of 5 current and former CPD officers in the room with the family for the case. At the beginning of court Hooks said that only federal law enforcement personnel were only allowed to have firearms in the room. The sheriffs asked the police at the door and in the room if they had firearms and nothing else. And if Hooks didn’t allow CPD officers in to support the family’s that’s an issue that needs to be addressed

Go above and beyond ! The new officers are doing that every night! They don’t pay attention and could care less. Guess they have to learn the hard way. The gap between veterans and rookies is so steep there is no common ground on anything. It has never before been this bad with the way these new officers are being trained and the way the job has changed so drastically over the past few years.
I see it everyday the refuse to listen to the veteran officers.

At the time, I was working in "The Bureau of Field Tactical Services" Yes, Deputy Joseph McCarthy's Unit. I was in the North Unit. After attending the Funeral, which Mayor Jane Byrne attended, and paid for the orchestra at the church, we were given grid pattern's to work. I still remember the description of the vehicle the offender's, I will not mention their name, were using. It was a Rose Colored Chevy Impala, 1980 or 1981. That Rose Color was rare, and I still remember that color today.

Hooks is a bad judge and he's on similar company across the board. They've made it much harder to work and, in fact, support an anti-police narrative. Gotta vote them out it'll stay the same.
A good question is why any cop was ever doing anything beyond answering a call for help.
A CRIME requires a victim. A VICTIM either calls for help themselves, or someone calls on their behalf(like if that person cant call for help themselves).
If there is no flesh and blood victim, then there is no crime. That means there is no business there for police.
With an overload of actual victims DAILY in Chicago, it stands to logical reasoning that answering actual calls from actual victims regarding actual crimes is all ANY CPD officer should be doing.
Ummmm......I dont want to rain on your rant, but the States Attorney’s office has nothing to do with this case now. It is the Special Prosecutor who is responsible for any re-trial which may take place.

I didn't know Officer O'Brien but I worked with Billy Fahey in 011. He was a Viet Name Vet and was the nicest person you would ever meet. All of us that knew Billy were devastated and today we still grieve and probably will until it is our time to leave this life.
