Heroic Effort
- After a 3-year-old girl was shot Wednesday afternoon in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, responding officers had a narrow window to act. Should they take the child and her father — believed to be the intended target — to the hospital themselves, or wait for an ambulance?
Their decision, to immediately rush the girl, who was shot in both legs, to Comer Children’s Hospital was one any officer would likely have made, said Officer Luis Saldana, one of four police officers who sped the pair to the hospital in a police squad vehicle.
“We wanted her to survive,” said Saldana, speaking at a Thursday afternoon news conference at the Chicago Police Department’s Deering District station. “I don’t want anyone to lose their child.”
A very good job officers. Hopefully she regains the ability to walk, jump, and run that all children ought to be able to do.
But why was a three-year-old targeted for multiple gunshot wounds?

- A 3-year-old girl seriously wounded on the South Side Wednesday afternoon was shot by a gunman apparently aiming at her father, a gang leader with a long arrest record, according to Chicago police.
The girl and her father, 34, were in the 1900 block of West 48th Street in Back of the Yards when someone walked up around 2:50 p.m. and fired, police said. The gunman ran off and possibly got into a black sedan waiting nearby.
Golly, it's almost like her life didn't matter.

And little Munoz wants to have police befriend these gamgbanging pigs.
Once again a Chicago thug demonstrates a terrible lack of basic marksmanship. Sad.
Why did that little officer save the day? Because he's Batman. Great job little louie.
34 years old? Grow up already
Sounds like this shit isn't over yet. Retaliation is guaranteed. Stay safe in that area, stay fetal
Great job officers! Piece of shits don't care about little 3 year olds. They wanted her father, and hitting her was a bonus to them. Hope she heals, and is able to do all the things every little girl is supposed to do.

No surprise. Gangbangers view rivals as less than human. They feel nothing for shooting an innocent either. They only care when one of “their” bros gets it. Then, it’s like a soap opera on steroids. That is their code.
Human shield!
Not a smart move, opening yourself up to lawsuits. Unless its your partner who's been critically injured leave the citizens for CFD. If they die or wind up having permanent injuries you can bet your ass some attorney will gladly convince them to sue you and the city.
That scumbag probably used her as a shield otherwise it seems like the girl was the target
Good job officer. You were on scene and your heart and conscience told you that you had to take that girl to the hospital.
Great job Luis!
Shitty marksmanship, pure and simple. With a documented (by HeyJackass) hit rate of 16%, all you can say is pitiful.
The little girl and her father were the intended target. Father Fakey and Jesse Jackson don’t March if you’re the intended target. We already know they only march when it’s a LEO involved. BLM and the Communerty only care when at the hands of the Poleece..... let’s see the LAME STREAM MEDIA PRINT THAT. I won’t hold my breath
pfather phlaky immediately condemned this shooting of an innocent child
O wait, the cops didn't shoot the girl, they saved her life....never mind

Nobody on the job I know is going to let a little three-year-old die. If you are the police and think this way, please find another line of work. I don't want to work anywhere around you.
Great work Officer Saldana, and partners. You all deserve a Commendation for your fast thinking and actions. You likely saved that little girl's life.
And to the low-life piece of shit cowardly Shooter; How the hell did you miss Dear Old Daddy? You walk up and start blasting away, and hit his kid. Great shooting there Annie Oakley. I hope you feel proud about that, shooting a little 3 y.o. Girl. Are you bragging about that to your amigos? Huh, jagoff?
If there was real justice in this world, you'd blow your brains out in remorse. But you're such a lousy shot you'd probably miss and hit an old lady waiting for a bus.
So let this suffice; Fuck You. Eat shit and die, asshole.
Great work by the police! Thank you! It was so nice and refreshing to see that JJ and faker got the word out on what a great job was done by the CPD...oh crap that didn't happen? Oh, just woke up so I guess I was dreaming that. Oh well. Nice job officers. Thanks for all you do in a thankless job.
I can't write what I'd like to do to these ghetto rats (no offense to the rats) so I guess I'll have to continue to walk around with the fantasy playing over and over in my mind. Stay fetal is correct.
If any good is to come of this it's the planned "share the pain" march on LSD to Wrigleyville will now take place in the neighborhood where some real pain takes place !!!

Should have left the thug for the paramedics, they need to keep busy.
Community Actist el’COPRAH will no doubt look into the entire incident to find what rules were broken.

The Trib story photo shows a well-fed gaggle of non working folk just standing around Sanctuary, presumably waiting the protest march to shut down 48th Street...or for the polling places to open up in late February.
Rahm and Special Ed sure know what’s best for the community, they both are onboard for the gang thug database purge long before Munoz introduced his bulshit plan to “reform” the CPD.
What’s next, will The Area will have to purge all files, prior arrests information and rely on community witnesses?
Oh, and what’s the Hunch Lab up to these days?
I'm sure father Pfleger is organizing a march and protest at the spot where she was shot as I type this.
OT: Consent Decree rolls out today at 1400 hrs at the Thompson center ....... Fetalness inbound
Let's March on Wrigley Field!
Getting her to the hospital faster might save her life.
Transporting her without stabilizing her and preparing her properly for the transport might kill her or make her injuries worse.
Same things would apply if it was anyone else, including a fellow cop.
Few if any cops have even a remote clue on how to make such an assessment. You may notice that EMS always prepares them for transport regardless of how critical their injuries are. That suggests it is usually a better option than just throwing them in a vehicle and speeding away, regardless of how satisfying that might be at the time.
I imagine emotions were running high but just remember that the officers put themselves square in the path of a lawsuit if the girl would have died, the police are not medically trained like the paramedics along with not having the proper equipment in their vehicle. I wouldn't transport a wounded person in my vehicle because if that person die enroute to a hospital the lawyers are going to surely ask "why didn't you wait for the paramedics" and when you give an answer saying you was trying to save a life, the next question is...what is the extent of your medical training? Cha-Ching.
Consent decree -
Doing minus; less than nothing and below minimum.

That's quite the taking the high ground there.
Remove the unreasonable public expectation of perfection from law enforcement officers.
Disregard, entirely, the decent human qualities which some knuckleheads insist that law enforcement officers are devoid of.
Reinforce the belief that all law enforcement officers are heartless, souless, power mad assholes.
Utilize the possibility of feckless lawyering scum doing what feckless lawyering scum do: exploit the laws of man to achieve the results of the greedy.
Then, submit this ode to feckless lawyering scum to SCC.
And await your well earned reward, your 15 seconds of insignificance.
Within the world where no good deed ever goes unpunished, a world temporary in nature, with a beginning, a duration and an end, finito, there exist two fundamental qualities of living beings:
Those who choose to value their in between beginning and ending duration as their highest priority, and those who consider the temporary nature of their present condition as the transitory experience that it is.
The former is not the same, in any way, as the latter.
And, though both end in the same manner, that moment just prior to death, just a smidgeon of a fraction of a second of a momement, when the question of when will I die is no longer a theoretical question, each experiences that instant as each has chosen to be during their duration between their beginning and their certain, inevitable ending.
Free Will.
It can be a bitch to think about.
And the consent decree http://chicagopoliceconsentdecree.org/resources/
Its too bad that the apparent shitty parenting this child is currently getting, coupled the PTSD she will surely get from being shot at age 3, will lead to a difficult life for her.
Hopefully, as she gets older, she will have some vague memory of men and women in CPD uniforms helping her-with of course, CFD personnel and hospital staff.
In the next episode of "Hill Street Blues", the Gang Leader decides to turn his life around because Renko ran the Leader's 3 yr old daughter to the hospital after she got shot. Saving her life and....
Yeah, makes for great TV, not so much for real life. Chances are good that the shit head will use the "cops saved mah babzies life" to taunt the shooters. That will in turn cause more shootings....
They likely found this "leader" hard to catch alone, and purposely waited for him to be out with the kid so he'd be distracted. A reprehensible tactic, but a tactic nonetheless.
All this insanity is just 'bizness' to these idiots. Leave them to their own devices. If they can't figure out that bringing kids into the mix is a lousy idea, well, then that's on them.
I'm still a strong believer of a Wall. 50' high - around the entire S and W sides. Toss some government cheese over once a week. When it's all said and done, raze the whole place, and build anew.
But consider that if the coppers had gotten into an accident while running the kid to the hospital, they'd get sued and stripped. IF the kid died, they'd be sued and stripped. If the kid has any lasting injuries, CPD and the officers will get sued; they did something against some half-assed Order so they'll get stripped...
Call it in, let CFD come and handle it. This is precisely the kind of Policin' that Da Communitie wants. Let them have it.
And the cops are the bad guys? Hope this little girl will be ok, and those responsible will meet Mr. Karma.
Gotta love the proposed consent decree. CPD must monitor and document all foot pursuits starting January 1.
OT; Take out the no strike clause and the no slowdown clause in contract and let city have their report every time you take out your gun. FOP needs to demand that IG not handle any police cases as he is obviously biased. Can CPD investigate him?
Where was Lisa Madigan when her dad and the democrats were running their crime wave? Did she find any wrongdoing with the city council or the democratically controlled legislature? She couldn't find a crime in the legislature if it occurred in front of her.
If it was that much of an emergency, shit head daddy should of taken her asap. But it didnt happen that way so yea, child lives dont matter now as well
We’re there when you need us.

Its a fine line from being given a life saving award by 9.5 or being served a civil suit or better yet 30 pending for not following dept guidelines.
And the police are the problem. Just ask that Childs family if they are. Gangbanger father would probably say yes.
Tough call, as you can see which ever decision you make your open to second guessing. But in this case you won. Good job.
Answer the call write paper anything else is your ass! FOP sucks!
The only thing that will Guarenteed fewer lawsuits is just quit doing proactive policing. Politicians don’t care about this distructive community why should we. Let the defense attorneys starve! I know it’s hard for u few blue jean police
A bit OT these Officers did the right thing but will they be recognized? What a disgrace to see Eric carter on the news today with the small plane landing on LSD. He's got Leo and Frazier Thomas beat with those multiple rows of bullshit award ribbons. Yeah I'm impressed you asshole
The Monday morning quarterbacks that are criticizing the Officers for taking that child to the hospital for fear of a lawsuit are unbelievable!!
I would’ve done the same thing.
You guys did a great job!!
1148 am and 1216 pm are correct.
Unless you're prepared to deal with the consequences if/when things go horribly sideways, your responsibility begins and ends with "render first aid and assistance". Sound familiar?
And since squad cars are equipped with neither paramedics or trauma physicians, requesting an ambulance is all you need to do. You're a damned fool to roll the dice, taking it upon yourself to transport a (potentially) critically injured person to the nearest hospital. You exacerbate the likelihood of compounding trauma/injuries. Plus The Good Samaritan Law means jack shit at the end of the day in our litigious society.
Unless you get told by the fireside dispatch that no ambulances or fire apparatus are available should you even entertain being a taxi to the closest ER. And even at that point I would be asking for them to reach out to a private ambulance service citing exigent circumstances before loading up a gunshot victim into the back of my squad car.
I say this as a father of four.
Flame away.
An aside: some CFD spokesperson was quoted on WBBM radio this morning reiterating the fact that the officers should've waited for the ambulance's arrival. Correct, but nice of them to help the media throw the coppers under the bus!
SCC, did you hear about the 9 shell casings found after residents in sleepy beat 1934 reported hearing gunshots? Just off Broadway & Briar — doesn’t get any more “safe North Side” than that. Maybe there was something to that reverend wanting to “redistribute the suffering”...
Good job boys! Way to get er done. I’m sure Cogs will reward himself w a pinch between the chin & gums. While Louie rollls his sleeves a little tighter. Seriously nicely done. We r proud of you
It's almost always better to transport a trauma victim asap to a trauma center than waiting for paramedics. Years ago statistics proved a much higher survival rate for trauma victims transportef immediately by basic life support units, rather than by waiting for paramedics. Trust me, I know. If you don't believe me, google it.

No striking for first responders is a state law.
Call and wait for the bambulance until they force you to become a paramedic. As of now you are not required to do more.
.....You may notice that EMS always prepares them for transport regardless of how critical their injuries are. That suggests it is usually a better option than just throwing them in a vehicle and speeding away, regardless of how satisfying that might be at the time.
7/27/2018 11:48:00 AM
You may notice that EMS is acutely aware of the very potential lawsuit liabilities which they are, because they are trained, both far more likely to be scum lawyerly accused of malpractice and defended by this very, two edged sword of being trained.
You focussed an interesting point, albeit, perhaps quite inintentionally.
....EMS always prepares them for transport regardless of how critical their injuries are...."
Securing for vehicular transportation is the clue here. With the, regardless of how critical their injuries, the kicker.
No one can honestly know what the effect of seconds, turning into minutes, can have or did have on any injury, or even disease process.
No one.
The common bullshit from the doctorly class of, "if only we'd been able to treat this sooner!!!" is just that, bullshit.
Rarely is the above actually true. Rarely.
And for traumatic injury, hardly ever.
The estimating of "if only sooner" is not a science, not even close.
It's CMA physician version.
Why? Because there is no fucking reason to ever say this to anyone other than to CMA. Or CYA, for the win.
So, ass eyed commenters, rejoice. Your fear of future possible bullshit will reliably impede your participation in being better than the world of meat, blood and bone intends you to be.
Looking out for number #1 has a nice ring to it, until you exhale your last breath and discover that ain't the end of you, not by a long shot.

If it’s a copper in trouble I’m rushing him/her to the ER, anyone else “squad, we’ll need an ambulance.” Hope the paramedic coppers aren’t railroaded. BTW IFIYGD for FOP president!
CAREFUL:

Definition of hate speech
: speech expressing hatred of a particular group of people.

How about fake priest Like old mike PHLEGER?
What is i dont like the Democrats or Alderman Burke?
Is Black lives matter a political group or a race group? They hate me!

This neighborhood doesn’t deserve the police! Let it burn!!
An advanced, not basic life support unit (paramedics)is the preferred treatment and transport ambulance for all trauma victims.Treatment can be administered on scene initially and while enroute to the hospital. Most volunteer fire departments in rural areas away from urban areas don’t have advanced care so yes, quick transport in a b.l.s. Ambulance is only what they have available or they call in helicopters. The police should stay with policing.Back in the 70’s the police in Chicago were taking credit for the drop in deaths from heroin overdose due to better law enforcement. In reality, the Paramedic’s newly hired to work on the Chicago fire department ambulances were injecting Narcan into the bodies of overdosed users and were able to enable the heroin addicts to live to use another day.Deaths from overdose dramatically declined. Now,the drug war politicians are taking credit for “saving lives”by bragging about how they secure funding for the increased availability of Narcan over 40 years later. How’s that drug war thing going?Chinese produced fentanyl is the game changer now.
Great job by the officers! SHE. IS. THREE. YEARS. OLD.
To all the others who disagree, guess rushing Del Pearson (sp) in a squad car to the emergency room was dumb too.
And to the "father of 4"... go have a seat in a dark corner facing the wall and think about your life and what would make you say something idiotic.
Not heroic but totally ballsy and the right call. Good job office(s). You saved a life. The child was bleeding out. Seconds count and an ambulance was minutes away. Any time spent waiting for an ambulance, or time spent by the paramedics "preparing the patient for transport" allows more blood to bleed out of the child. You made a life or death decision and it was the right one. You are men of honor and integrity as opposed to some on here whose words speak volumes about themselves and their lack of both the former and latter.

Sae p. 23 Re: CPD Promotions.
"MERIT" (never defined in writing) If these corrupt or at best, naive clowns want "reform", start with the criteria for PROMOTIONS in the CPD. CLOUT does NOT correlate with the Merriam-Webster definition of the word "merit". It's all nepotism, cronyism, "cash campaign contributions" (aka "BRIBERY") and sexual favors which determine promotions and ultimately lifetime six-figure pensions. Just don't rock the boat, be a suckhole and ultimately gain a six-figure pension. While the DemocRATic pols and local MSM will ignore or at least deny it, we all know that Chicago politicians and the CPD management are the most politically corrupt big city scum in the nation.
On p. 23, the "report" lists the 1898 "Berry Committee" on political CLOUT as the first CPD scandal demanding REFORM. 120 years later, it's only far worse. Take your "transparency" in promotions and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. Google "EXAMSCAM" and "Chicago Police". for details when the city ignored the FACT that they were caught red-handed rigging "the promotional process" for their favorites, many of whom were unfit to be police.
"Chicago ain't ready for reform" - the late Alderman Paddy Bauler.
To those that may think a prolific record of Part I felony arrests with subsequent convictions or native intelligence is critical to CPD advancement, pass the bong.

hopefully the judgement shown by police in this case won't result in the little girl dying or being injured worse than would have been necessary.
even on the battlefield with arms and legs blown off medics stabilize patients before transport. sometimes it is rather perfunctory but they don't just throw them in a car and drive away.
Officers received admonishment for transporting a child in police vehicle without a child seat 💺.

Nothing to ponder. When you feel you have to transport to save a life, you react and do it
Ever hear the name Del Pearson? He was a CPD officer shot in the chest and would have bled out if they waited and his partners didn’t do first aid on him. I’m pretty sure he is happy his partners didn’t “ponder” instead of acting
In 1985 Ben Wilson was tranported to St Bernard's Hosp with a gunshot wound, At the time CFD transported to the closest Hosp,He bleed to death because they were not level 1 trauma center,If you are shot or stabbed you need a ER with Surgeon's not Doctor's.

That’s why you transport them to a level one trauma center.
the much larger Wilson was just "punking" him and drew his weapon. Wilson then lunged at Moore, who responded by firing two shots at him. The first struck Wilson in his groin while the second struck him in his abdomen and caused significant internal bleeding.[17] Moore and Dixon then fled. Within minutes, word of the shooting reached Simeon's campus, and a crowd gathered near Wilson. Emergency services were called at 12:37 PM local time, while Simeon basketball coach Bob Hambric made a call to WMAQ-TV newsman Warner Saunders and informed him of what happened.
Paramedics were slow in reaching the scene and at approximately 1:20 PM, Hambric decided to take it upon himself to get his star player to the hospital. Just as he was getting into his car, an ambulance arrived to the scene on South Vincennes. According to Chicago's then emergency protocol, Wilson was taken to the nearest available hospital, which was St. Bernard Hospital in Englewood. St. Bernard was a small community hospital that was not equipped to handle emergencies or trauma cases like shootings, so a call was put out for any available trauma surgeon to report immediately to St. Bernard.
You can't stabilize a bleeding trauma patient in the field. They need blood and surgery. IV solutions aren't blood. Any time wasted trying to stabilize a bleeding trauma patient in the field is time wasted not getting them to a surgeon and blood. In the battlefield they do what they can while waiting for evacuation. It is never appropriate to delay transportation of a hemodynamically unstable trauma patient.

Have to agree with 20 year man. When you are bleeding out, you need a hospital as soon as possible and if the squad is available, then is the squad. Del Pearson would have bled out and below is a link about the CFD taking 43 minutes
