P.O.W.E.R. Test Returns

It used to be you had to pass the POWER test to get into the Academy, then pass it four other times during the training, including to graduate.

That rule was suspended and a whole bunch of classes only had to pass the entry POWER test.

Now the test is back multiple times.

Multiple comments and more than a few e-mails claim this is related to a certain high-ranking member's son finally graduating and not having to strain himself.

Earned, not given, unless you're related to someone.

Wrong or furthermore Bullshit. 1st Power Test is still in place as normal. You can take the test at a satellite site and present a "Power Card" that you passed the test which moves you forward in the hiring process. 2nd Power Test right before entry into the academy is still in place but you cannot present a "Power Card" for that one. You have to take the test under the supervision of academy staff.

We had to complete it once to get in and then 3 more times after that. They told us it was mandated by the State.

Clueless, entitled, brain-dead, whiners, with no concept of how to do even the simplest of things required for this job. It all starts at the academy, and there are no standards there. The "everyone gets a trophy" mindset shouldn't apply when the "trophy" is a badge and a gun.

The P.O.W.E.R. test was suspended several years ago. Nothing in the ILETSB or the CPD academy rules state that failing to pass the P.O.W.E.R. test has anything to do with passing the academy, termination, qualifying for the state exam. A few bitchy millenial recruits are upset that the P.O.W.E.R. test was reinstated, and began crying and spreading rumors about why. THIS POST IS FALSE NARRATIVE BASED ON CRYBABY RUMOR MONGERING!

Been retired 8yrs. I learned early in my career not yo get involved in bullshit. They want to riot, protest, march, burn the neighborhoods, loot let them. The mob can set fire to a Walgreens while looting same but the only story on the news is the copper bouncing his stick off the arsonist's head. A good example is last week an 82 yr old man was shot while walking his dog. No protesting and very little news coverage as the 82yr old man lies in critical condition. The shithead that is the subject of of the current demonstrations I'm sure was a pillar of the south shore community? Maybe Jesse or phaker can verified. Crime lab should run ballistics see if his gun was used in any shootings.

That bs has been going on forever.
I recall a certain retired commanders kid, big kid, really big, could fill a doorway. He had trouble with the run so a certain (very nice Sgt S.S.) would have the kid stay, for weeks, after everyone else had gone have the kid run around the academy. Well, it became clear that there was no way the kid was ever gonna pass the run, so the good Sgt told the gym staff that the kid passed the run. The gym staff didn't want to take the Sgts. word but the Deputy approved and the kid passed.

The POWER test is:
1) take POWER test once all your background invest if finished and you are ready to enter academy.
2) if it has been longer than 45 days since your POWER test, (you've been waiting to get in academy) you must take it again (State rules)
3) Take POWER test your first week in academy.
4) Take POWER test 2 more times while in training at academy.
5) Take a final POWER test prior to graduation.
The only State requirements are #1 & #2. All the rest are academy requirements (NOT even city or Dept requirements)

When I got hired in the early 90's, I had to take the power test as part of the hiring process. Then in the academy we had to run the wall course in under 1 min.

But even back then no one failed the power test. If you didn't do the required push ups or bench press the required weight you became a card carrying member of the breakfast club. I saw a lot of my classmates running when I would show up for class in the morning.

The academy had in place several power tests during the 5 months of training. The first power test is mandated by the state training board. The following power tests required the recruits to show progress in their physical fitness. Guess who stopped the power tests? Guess who lowered the physical standards for recruits? The leader in charge of the academy for the last five years. He was quoted as the power tests are mean, and not necessary. This leader also reduced the physical punishments of recruits ( pushups). This leader cannot change the first power test as it is required by the state. Because of constant pushing by his sgt, this leader finally has brought back power tests during the academy training. It is embarrassing how a recruit can enter the academy in shape and graduate in worse shape. Only in Chicago.

The word in the academy was that the son of the superintendent of police did not pass the fist power test because he is so out of shape to pass it, so they passed him anyways. Knowing that this kid would not pass any power test, guess what? the academy stopped having the recruits taking the power tests to graduate. But as soon as this kid (future boss) graduated, the academy brought it BACK. hahahahahahahahaha..... Wooo Just Woow!!

Your post is the one that's wrong. The way it used to be is pass it to be eligible. Then pass it again a few weeks prior to entering the academy. Then a 3rd time the first week of the academy. Then a 4th time halfway through. Then a 5th and final time before you get out.

Retired. Went to the academy about 24 years ago. We had 4 people who couldn’t do the run at the last power test. Ervin called them into the office to fire them. They looked like they were gonna cry. Sgt jash went in and saved them. 2 older women and an older guy. And one guy was over 350+ pounds.he got bigger in the academy. All members of the breakfast club. What’s the big deal. For years everyone passes the power test. Even if it takes passing it in a private session
Worked in Area 4 and used to watch the recruits run. Towards the end of the recruits time in the academy you would see a group of recruits running down Jackson. Then sometimes 10 minutes back and blocks and blocks behind there was a group of recruits basically walking. Surprisingly a few weeks later they all passed and they all graduated. It was a miracle. City doesn’t want to flunk them because of the time and money it cost to train a recruit. Then there are the clouted ones and the ones that can’t be flunked because of the political backlash

And I exercise more, usually running every couple days, now than when I came on. I was 29 in the academy and not challenged by PT (burb academy) but the young 20s were in there dying like they were in labor. I couldn't believe it. I'm pushing 30 with a wife and kids and these fresh out of college studs make me look like Captain America. It still baffles me. And the young kids in the military are no better.
