- For more than four years, the family of Chicago police officer Tito “Mannie” Rodriguez, Jr. has endured court hearings as they wait for answers in his death.
Dennis Anderson was charged with reckless homicide in the 28-year-old’s death, but two weeks ago the family was dealt a crushing blow by the state’s attorney’s office when Anderson was offered a plea deal, according to the family.
“It felt like Mannie died all over again,” said his father (also named Tito Rodriguez).
He was killed in 2014 while driving his motorcycle on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Witnesses say Anderson recklessly crossed traffic lanes illegally that night before striking Rodriguez’s motorcycle near 71st Street.
“We lost him because of a man that did something reckless,” his father said.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office would not confirm whether there was a plea deal.
We don't doubt for a second that there's a deal on the table. Witnesses be damned, Krime-esha is going to plea this one out since it's only a cop. We aren't asking for the Death Penalty - we're asking for fair sentencing. And we can name dozens of cases similar in nature where prison time was deserved and given.

The States Attorney Office has become the Offenders Defense Office. The ASA’s review a case and Monday morning quarterback all the things that could have been done differently. Then they tell you that the end result is charges had to be reduced or in some cases dropped, and try harder next time. Hell, I’ve gone in to court only to find out that the case was adjudicated over the phone with a deal between the defense and ASA, no input from the officer. This happens more often then not.
The ASA is supposed to defend the state statute against those in society who feel they do not need to follow it. Kim Foxx and her new breed of ASA’s no longer due that. Remember her top aide called out Judge Ford for following the statute. Then proceeded to completely disrespect him in the media, even holding a press conference to chastise Judge Ford. This office is a disgrace, and needs to be exposed for failing to adhere to the responsibilities of the office of the States Attorney.

And if the rolls were reversed and a cop was driving the car and Anderson was killed would you be crying fowl then? If your answer is no then your are as big of a problem as the States Attorney. Laws were meant to be enforced equally but some are more equal than others. Were the charges reduced because the victim was a cop or does Anderson have clout? I doubt it, it's just the way the this SA does business. I to feel sorry for the family and a lot of other families that are waiting for the justice they will never receive in Chicago or crook county.
It's a tough sell to a jury so usually some kind of plea deal is worked out. Likely has nothing to do with the victim being an off duty cop. Same thing would be just as likely if the dead guy was an off duty plumber.
Update... today in court, the piece of shit had more support than the family of Officer Rodriguez. Sad to say. The good news is that we have another chance to show our support for a fallen brother. Continuance is set for December 4th, room 201 at which time the family will be allowed to read their victim impact statement. The FOP and the family have requested that anyone that knew Mannie, please write a letter with some words on how Mannie impacted their life. If you can make it to court that day, it would be greatly appreciated. Offender’s support should not outweigh that of Officer Rodriguez’ in the gallery.
