Cameras are great, right? They don't sleep, they can see in the dark, and they're all over the crime ridden west and south sides. So why aren't they catching this?
- More than a dozen vehicles have been vandalized and ransacked this month throughout the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
In each case, someone has damaged a vehicle before going through the interior, according to a community alert from Chicago police. In some instances, multiple cars in the same block were damaged about the same time.
The Sun Times says "more than a dozen," but a quick scan of radio traffic and our usual e-mailers are saying it's between siz and a dozen cars per night. In other words, there have been something like one hundred different reports done, all downgraded to "theft" or "criminal damage."
Little wonder the FBI doesn't use Chicago numbers.

Downgraded from what? The report would be for theft from vehicle or criminal damage to vehicle. Charging is another thing.
I wonder who is downgrading it????
if you write a full and thorough report it will never be able to be downgraded.

That's why they're saying the cars were 'damaged' before someone went through them and stole items from them. The damage is breaking the windows. It's not like they keyed the car or spray painted the doors. Lies, lies and more lies.

Burglary to auto is a charge, not a UCR in case reporting.
Theft from vehicle is the proper classification in which items went missing . If no items went missing it would be criminal damage to vehicle.
Should an offender get caught wit proceeds.......the charge would be Burglary . One of the easiest felony cases to get charges approved on. Great 1st watch pinch.

The same thing is going on the the suburbs, such as Palos Heights, Alsip and Crestwood. They are reducing crime by changing reporting. Entering a vehicle and tossing the inside is now not a burglary, but just theft. I have never agreed with the change in the law making entering a car to commit a theft a burglary, but that is the law now and should be reported as such.The suburbs do not even report crime news in the local papers, they do not want to scare the resident.

Write them a ticket for parking in an alley. They get a couple of them, they will start using their garages for more than extra storage.

I wish we could somehow escalate the debate around city crime stats for public consumption. It makes me sick to my stomach every time I hear crime is down. The cracks in this bold faced lie are really starting to show and it's becoming plain as day. The city has put everyone at risk and I think a class action lawsuit might be in order.
