How Can This Be?

  • Overtime spending in the Chicago Police Department is rising again after a 30 percent drop in first-quarter spending driven by tighter controls aimed at holding supervisors accountable.

From January through April, Chicago police officers were paid $29.7 million in overtime, down from $42.1 million during the same period a year ago.

But the trend was short-lived, according to records released in response to a Freedom of Information request filed by the Chicago Sun-Times.

They show that police overtime for the four-month period ending in August was $50.9 million, a 71 percent increase from first-quarter spending.

In May, an additional $7.1 million was spent. That includes the 1,000 moonlighting officers assigned to keep a lid on violence over Memorial Day.
So why isn't all the hiring alleviating the manpower shortages that seem to be driving OT costs? Could it be that the new officers are merely papering over a Department that is so top-heavy and so bureaucracy-heavy with hidden spots that OT is the only way to man the cars?

O.T. - I just watched the PBS show "Frontline". This week's segment is named, "The Pension Gamble". It focuses on looming issues concerning Kentucky's public-sector pensions. The show only touched the surface concerning public-sector pension issues, but the program does help to provide a foundation so members are educated consumers to ask questions. Votes in the election for Chicago Police Pension Representative - D1, D2 and D2A will be counted on Oct. 25, 2018. "An educated consumer is an organization's best customer."

Funny, hold the police "accountable" for the failing of the Democrat government and Democrat controlled Circuit County Court network. As a citizen reader the cries of hire more police do not move me. I don't mind more police on the street and in the ranks but the problem and answer to street crime is not the police. It is the government and court system that are failing to administer swift justice and punishment to criminals rather than affordable bond and time served and supervision and right on down the line. The problem: which of the announced candidates for Mayor will solve the problems? Answer: NONE.

I recently retired 2 young coppers were telling me how hard they work constantly I asked them if this was their first job they said “right out of college,” they have zero idea of what the real world world is and what working hard means. Many young coppers with the college degree which I the new high schools diploma with the “marketing” degree would be lucky to make 40K a year for many hours and actually work harder. Funny listening to the “f this job I’m leaving” morons then years later they are still here. The reality is you will never make that kind of money you make here unless your connected to someone. Oh and the residency dream will never happen now put those Batman pajamas on young ones, put more punishers stickers on your lifted wrangler, get some more tattoos and skinny jeans, tell the girls at the bar “I’m smart and people like me,” and please for your own good stfu!

Civilian here - A year ago I sat in a meeting at the Town Hall police station with 30 others and Ald Tunney. Police Superintendent Johnson told us that he would be ADDING 40 police officers to the 19th district by Summer (of 2018). He apparently used the new math, because the Alderman’s office says we now have less officers than a year ago. I understand that officers get transferred, promoted, retire, why doesn’t the police department take that into account? If the city hired 1,000 additional officers, where are they? All on the Southside?

Pension should be based on last rank earned , not given .
No pensions for any rank over Lieutenant , only exempt pension should be superintendent . Superintendent pension should be based on last 12 years of salary and if any ranks were Merit , based on last earned Rank , special ed would retire as a P.O , so would Hillard .

Retired 12+ years now and am proud to say I never once, in my entire career, worked a voluntary extra hour, let alone, a full day. I know. Everyone has an excuse for the overtime but you create the actual need. Take responsibility for that mostly unnecessary need that drives you to work overtime or days off.

What's my point or direction I'm going? Maybe, just maybe, if no one volunteered for overtime, the department would be forced to HIRE more cops. More cops that would feed into the pension fund and allow you to spend time with your family by not having time denied.

There is NO CLAUSE in the contract, unlike the no strike clause, that requires you to work your days off except in emergencies. Put pressure on the department/city and enjoy life in the meantime.
