As a regular citizen I am so tired of hearing about police officers hurt and killed by these bottom feeding animals. The words "I'm sorry" does not even begin to Express how I feel and I know it doesnt make anyone feel better. There are too many names on the police memorial wall and now there is another name too many.

Hello. My name is Jane Doe. I can't say my name because I was told if I talk to the police or talk to the media I will lose my consulting assignment with Mercy Hospital & Medical Center. I was there today onsite. I saw first hand what happened. I ushered dozens of employees into a conference room so they could hide behind a locked door. Then I went into the lobby to see if I could help. With my own eyes, I saw a gunman open fire on police officers. I saw a police officer fall to the ground. I've since learned that this young officer lost his life.

This man, this incredibly brave man, gave his life trying to save me. Trying to save all those employees hiding. Trying to protect out hospital.

Officer Samuel Jimenez I thank you.

Because of you and your bravery, countless people are safe tonight. Because of you I made it home safe tonight despite my officer being riddled with bullets.

My deepest gratitude and my tears are just a small, simple gift that I give you. May your family know that you are a true hero!!!! Sadly, I saw your blood but I also saw your gift.... You gave your life so my co-workers and I could go home to our loved ones tonight.

I, we, are forever in your debt. May you Rest in Peace Hero Jimenez. You are our Angel.

This afternoon I was in my office at Mercy Hospital and I heard dozens upon dozens of shots fired. Bullets were coming thru the walls, like something on tv. My desk phone wouldn't call out to 911 for some reason & my cell wouldn't call out either. All I could do is Tweet & text. I literally tweeted the CPD & Anthony G letting them know we had an active shooter. Within minutes, CPD was there. Heroes pulled up & I knew we'd be ok. But - not everyone was ok. My heart is truly broken to hear that a PO lost his life. My heart is broken that 2 of our employees lost their lives. What makes this situation even sadder is that the people who were killed were people who devoted their lives to saving those of others. Some saved lives thru medicine and one thru law enforcement. You have all left us way too soon.

To the Men and Women of CPD, the pain never really goes away. It hides and resurfaces over and over. We are in an age of being blamed for all of societies ills. We are also experiencing extremely poor leadership within CPD as well as a department strangled by politics like never seen before.
We all lost a friend, brother, partner, son, husband and father today. Letโ€™s keep an eye on each other and encourage seeking assistance when that time arrives.
What an incredibly honorable job we do all year round.
Itโ€™s OK to smile during this trying time. We all think and feel the same during these times, we just donโ€™t share our thought with each other enough. It helps.
Love all of you.
Keep the Faith.

I work at a hospital in Chicago, part research and part clinician, working with one of the most famous physicians in the city (nationally and internationally famous). I have been reading this blog on and off for years as sort of a window into the unpromoted, and often unfortunate, truths that go unreported in a field of activity (in this case, policework). I am sure there are such blogs for other fields, but it has become clear to me over time, just from this blog combined with the media's anti-police hysteria, that being a police officer is far, far more difficult than being a physician. And God Bless the physician who was murdered today, but she was the targeted victim, and it was Officer Jimenez's job - his job! - to deal with this crazy nut and try to come out alive. All the while wearing a camera to document for vultures sitting around later leisurely questioning every action with hindsight, plenty of time, and a thirst for a scapegoat. Many of you are truly unsung heroes, for lack of a better phrase, and I want you to know that many of us normal citizens see that every time we look past those tacky reflective vests you have to wear and see people in uniform, who, through their work, and despite dealing with this corrupt and failing system, uphold themselves, their families, our neighbors, and our society.

May you rest in the arms of the Lord. You made the most Christ-like act anyone could do, sacrifice and for that I know you're in heaven brother. May G-d bless and give your loved ones strength and help them find peace and serenity in the midst of their pain. You are forever a hero in my eyes and in the eyes of many many more.

As a regular citizen I am so tired of hearing about police officers hurt and killed by these bottom feeding animals. The words "I'm sorry" does not even begin to Express how I feel and I know it doesnt make anyone feel better. There are too many names on the police memorial wall and now there is another name too many.

As a regular citizen I want so much to help or to support all of you officers who protect us, but what can i do? More than anything in the world I would love to be one of you but unfortunately I cant. If there would be any way I can help and support you, I would do it.

Just know there are citizens out there that would step in and help if you needed it. I am so sorry for this officer losing his life over a piece of trash.

First of all thank you. People like you is why Officers put on the uniform and get in the squad car.

Next there are two charities the hundred Club of Cook County and the Chicago Police Memorial Fund who spring into action cases like this.

Thanks you again

Kudos to WGN to sticking with full coverage, from the very start, up to procession. All other news went to their prime time television at 7pm. RIP Brother.

11/19/2018 09:26:00 PM

They then offered coverage on their alternate stations, but cut it off at 2000 hours.

Not WGN-TV. They gave full coverage all the way to the morgue.

RIP Police Officer Samuel Jimenez. You forever will be a hero.

I personally knew officer Jimenez. He was one of nicest people you could meet. Proud to wear the badge and eager to learn. Always with a smile on his face. He served his city proudly and with courage. Today we lost a great human being. Thank you for all the good you did sam. We love you and we will miss you. Rest in peace brother, we have your watch now.

So sad, hurt and angry about all of this. This didn't have to happen. I vote, pay my taxes and try to get by. WHAT MORE CAN WE DO? What is this 100 club I heard about on the news; How can I get involved?

Retired suburban sergeant here. No matter what our patch says, we are all brothers and sisters in blue. Godspeed officer. And to the families of the doctor and the pharmacy tech who were killed by the cowardly shooter, their dedication to saving lives is what their legacy is. Three young lives tragically snuffed out by a maniac. RIP to all three victims. My the good Lord hold you in his arms.

When tragedies like this happen, there's always a link of some kind to underscore the sadness. We read that the officer leaves behind a wife and several little kids, we read about his hopes and aspirations, his recent achievements, the proximity to anniversaries and in this case upcoming holidays, or the pride the family had in him for being the first to graduate college or police academy. All of this means much to those in the law enforcement community. Mostly everyone else outside family will forget because its too damn commonplace. I do my best to remember every officer who gave his life when I was among you. Bosak, VanSchaak, Doyle, Fahey, O'Brien, Clark, Hauser and Kilroy, Riordan, Bauer and others, too many that an aging memory strains to recall the names. But through all the years that go by, the sadness of their passing lingers. I tell my friends and family that there's nothing sadder than a killed in the line of duty funeral. And it's still true, there isn't. Please stay safe, and watch out for each other. Bless you all.

When this story hit I immediately thought of officer michael ceriale. I was on duty 20 years ago when he was shot. We all loaded up and went down to the hospital to donate blood. I will be stopping by his memorial tonite at horner park to say a prayer for him and also for officer jimenez. As much as we get dumped on when the bell rings we are always up to the challenge.

Thoughts and prayers for the officer, the shooter is reported dead so they fricking SAO cant cut him a deal, than you U of C for opening a Trauma Center so that they could get the officer there instead of the longer drive to County.Sadly I am glad to be retired from the job, it is no longer worth it.

11/19/2018 04:36:00 PM

Although most of it's no longer worth it, it's always of the greatest worth to save the innocent. I'm sure that's what you meant.

RIP Officer God bless your brave soul. We will always remember and NEVER FORGET! Your family will always be in my familyโ€™s prayers. This senseless tragedy is felt ever more this time of your. I havenโ€™t really read any of the previous postings and not sure if it was mentioned but I ask that prayers are also extended to the family to all the victims especially the young lab techโ€™s family. The young lab tech is from a CPD family. As a matter of fact an officer responding to the scene learned it was his relative upon his arrival, terrible way to get the news. Tragedies like these are very far reaching.

So many people do not understand what it means to put on a uniform and volunteer to put yourself into danger for people you don't know and in many cases don't know your name. Some of those same people will curse you and your brothers for just existing. Yet many of us still put on that uniform day after day. Knowing that we can make a difference. Wondering how we will react if a SHTF happens. Officer Jimenez was in such a SHTF instance and he reacted with the courage that all of us pray we have. He spent his life saving the lives of others. His sacrifice is not in vain. Because of him many people will go home to their families.

God speed Officer Jimenez. Your watch is done others will take it from here. Save some room at the big table for the rest of us we will join you eventually.

WGN is Chicago' very own for decades. Ms. Micha the anchor of the evening and late news and all their reporters gave us viewers a heartfelt report until our hero got to the M.E office. You could see and tell Ms. Michah was so thoughtful, respectful in all her comments about the fallen and the CPD. God bless you Ms. Micah, you are a very compassion anchor and reporter.

WGN has always been a friend of the police. In the old days, us old timer' would tip off WGN of breaking news stories. Their man on the midnight's that roamed the city, Larry Shriner was always on the street reporting on the scene news. He was a gem. He always gave praise to the CPD when live reporting on WGN news radio.

Unlike the other 3 news outlets, WGN did not break for commercials and unlike the other news outlets stayed with the live story till the end and with total respect.
Send WGN an email for their total compassion in reporting this very tragic LOD death of our hero.

Thank you so much Ms. Micha.
