City Council Code of Silence?
- Aldermen responded with shock Wednesday to a newspaper report that veteran Ald. Daniel Solis has been cooperating with federal authorities, some directing anger at him while others condemned City Hall culture and said the revelation must act as a clarion call for reform.
In a City Council that’s no stranger to federal investigations, it was nonetheless stunning for many of Solis’ colleagues to hear the powerful chairman of the Zoning Committee was possibly wearing a wire in the federal case against Ald. Edward Burke. They were reacting to a Sun-Times story that said Solis secretly recorded conversations with Burke, whom federal authorities charged earlier this month with attempted extortion.
That "...no stranger to federal investigations..." is the latest entry into the SCC Understatement of the Year award ceremony.
- One longtime colleague of Solis’ said she might cry about his wearing a wire because “you don’t do that.” Another alderman said that in his Southwest Side ward, “if you wear a wire someone’s going to kick your ass.”
So...snitches get stitches on the Council floor?
- Black Caucus Chairman Ald. Roderick Sawyer, 6th, said he wouldn’t wear a wire against fellow council members. Sawyer said the situation could cause distrust, with aldermen thinking twice when dealing with their colleagues.
“You would like to think someone would just take their punishment like they should take their punishment and not try to spread it to other people. It could be entrapment. It could be ensnaring somebody in something they would not normally do,” Sawyer said.
So this would be not just a tacit endorsement of a Code of Silence, but a validation of same.
The next time one of these assholes makes even a peep about some police "code," just remember this and remember that alderassholes go to jail at a far greater rate than the CPD does.

Yes, you are spot on. The real " code of silence" exists within the Illinois Political class, Lisa Madigan, Dick Durbin, Mendoza, Preckwinkle, 50 alderman and a host of others. I do not recall when any of these self-righteous elected officials actually came out and condemned the behavior and actions of a fellow democrat, with the exception of Dorthy Brown and only when she was just over the top in her ethical behavior.

Why wasn't Aunt Esther talking about her relationship with Burke and the hiring of his son as a political favor. Blago got jail time for that kind of horse trading. I guess that is her code of silence on the city council.

All bullshit aside, I am seriously considering writing a letter to whatever federal agency is spearheading this investigation. I can’t stop the smile from forming on my face when I think of how many aldermen are currently shitting their pants for all their illegal misdoings. The only thing that concerns me is the question of affidavits and warrants allowing additional targets outside of people with whom the feds initiated the investigation against, e.g. Ed. Burke. I hope and pray Solis captures a shit ton of other corrupt Chicago politicians in the course of Burkes investigation, and that the feds were able to use that information in further criminal investigations. I would also love to see you nearly every mayoral candidate, aldercreature and corrupt politician have SWs executed at their offices and them being hauled off by feds to the federal courthouse. Again, the best thought of this might just be how terrified all these other politicians are as I think of the prospects of them getting hit with federal indictments. The only thing I’m left to think about is Christmas coming early or late this year?

The marine unit has a code of silence big time. A certain SGt. E.B. had his unofficial take home department vehicle pickup truck tagged on Jan. 17th while parked illegally under lake shore drive near Grand Ave. They spray painted CPDK on the drivers side window and door and this idiot never made a report on it and an officer safety alert was never put out on the daily administrative messages. This happened in the 018th dist. and this is a total disregard for officer safety and proper police procedures ! He also asked a PO to clean the paint off for him which was a total cover up of a crime to a department vehicle. This idiot should be stripped and sent to callback or launched to 005 on midnights. If this was a PO who failed to make a case report we all know what would happen. The funny thing is they continue to let this moron take this vehicle home ! Fuck this whole department , no accountability for consistent incompetance !
